direction of propagation of an electromagnetic wave.

(b) What is the speed of an electromagnetic wave travelling (2 marks)

through free space?

(c) An electromagnetic wave has a wavelength of 21cm.

i. Determine the frequency of this wave. (2 marks)

ii. Determine the period of this wave. (2 marks)

(d) Determine the frequency of an X-ray with a wavelength of (2 marks)

0.12nm.

(e) Given that the sun is away and light travels a (2 marks)
distance of 17987520Km per minute, how long does it takes
for light to travel from the sun to the earth? Present your
answer in minutes.

(f) The radio frequency range that is typically used for radio
communications spans from 3KHz to 300GHz. It is divided
into bands shown in Table 3.1 of your course material (Unit
3, page 6).

i. From the table, find the frequency range for VHF. (2 marks)

ii. List two applications of VHF. You may look up the (2 marks)
answers from the internet or from books.

(g) List down the two types of wave motion and briefly describe (4 marks)
each of them.

2
Question 2 (20 Marks)

(a) A wave travelling down a transmission line has a maximum (3 marks)

voltage of Vmax and a minimum voltage of Vmin. Write the
expression of the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of this
wave.

(b) A 50Ω, 500m long lossless transmission line is used to

transmit power at a frequency of 10 kHz. The phase speed of
the line is 0.368c, where c is the speed of light in a vacuum.
The line is connected to a load ZL = (70 + j150)Ω. Calculate:-

i. The wavelength. (2 marks)

ii. The reflection coefficient at the load. Give your answer (6 marks)
in polar form.

(c) State the function of the Smith Chart. (2 marks)

(d) Locate the following normalized impedances in the Smith (2 marks)

chart provided:-

i. (2 marks)

ii. (3 marks)

Note: You must answer this question with the Smith Chart
provided. You must attach the Smith Chart with your
answers in your TMA 2 to get the marks for this question.

3
Question 3 (20 Marks)

(a) Name the three types of transmission line losses. (3 marks)

(b) What are the two factors that determine the amount of (3 marks)
capacitance, resistance and inductance of a transmission
line?

(c) A line has a physical length of 3 metres and it is transmitting

a radio frequency of 30KHz.

i. Calculate the wavelength of the radio frequency. (3 marks)

ii. Is the line considered electrically short or long (as (3 marks)

defined in the guidelines given in your course material
Unit 4 pages 9 - 11)?

(d) A lossless transmission line is 330m long. The inductance

(Ll) and capacitance (Cl) are determined by measuring a 30m
section of the line. The section is found to have an
inductance of 0.25mH and a capacitance of 1100pF.
Determine:-

i. The characteristic impedance of the line. (3 marks)

ii. The velocity of the wave on the line. (3 marks)

(e) Waveguides are hollow structures that are use to carry high (2 marks)
