Abstract:
This action research study aims to address the issue of poor numeracy skills among secondary school
students. The research will focus on identifying factors contributing to poor numeracy skills,
implementing targeted interventions, and evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions in
improving students' mathematical abilities and overall academic performance. The study will employ a
mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative assessments, qualitative data collection, and
collaborative partnerships with teachers, parents, and the community to propose evidence-based
strategies for enhancing numeracy skills.
Introduction:
Poor numeracy skills among secondary school students can hinder their academic progress and future
prospects. This action research seeks to identify the factors contributing to poor numeracy skills and
develop effective interventions to address these challenges. By undertaking this research, we aim to
promote quality mathematics education and equip students with the necessary skills for success in their
academic and professional journeys.
Research Questions:
1. What are the key factors contributing to poor numeracy skills among secondary school students?
2. What targeted interventions can be implemented to enhance numeracy skills among secondary
school students?
3. How effective are these interventions in improving students' numeracy skills and academic
performance?
Methods:
1. Quantitative Phase: Administer numeracy assessments to secondary school students and collect data
on factors such as learning environment, teaching methodologies, curriculum alignment, and students'
attitudes and beliefs towards mathematics.
2. Qualitative Phase: Conduct interviews and focus group discussions with teachers, parents, and
students to gain insights into their perspectives on factors influencing numeracy skills.
3. Intervention Phase: Collaborate with teachers to develop and implement targeted interventions
based on identified factors. These interventions may include differentiated instruction, interactive
teaching strategies, problem-solving activities, and the use of technology and real-world contexts.
4. Implementation Phase: Implement the interventions in selected secondary school classrooms, and
monitor students' progress through formative assessments, teacher observations, and student
feedback.
5. Data Analysis: Analyze quantitative data using statistical methods such as correlation analysis and t-
tests to examine relationships between variables. Qualitative data will be thematically analyzed to gain
deeper insights into the factors impacting numeracy skills and the effectiveness of the interventions.
Expected Outcomes:
1. Identification of key factors contributing to poor numeracy skills among secondary school students.
3. Improvement in students' numeracy skills and academic performance as a result of the implemented
interventions.
Conclusion:
The findings of this action research study will provide valuable insights into the factors influencing poor
numeracy skills among secondary school students. The proposed interventions seek to address these
challenges, fostering an environment that promotes numeracy skill development. The expected
improvement in students' numeracy skills will contribute to their overall academic success and future
endeavors. By disseminating the research outcomes and recommendations, we hope to positively
impact mathematics education at the secondary school level, equipping students with strong numeracy
skills for their educational and professional pursuits.
