4. Checking of Attendance
Let’s do a quick attendance class.
As I call your name, raise your
hand and say your nickname,
okay?
Very good! Everybody is present Okay teacher
today.

or Presenting the the topic Tessellation.
New Lesson Now, what are the important facts
that you have remembered from
the topic tessellation? (Answers may vary)
Okay, what else? (The students will
answer)
Okay very good.
C. Establishing a As I walk in the city, I saw a lot of
Purpose for the buildings and this one caught my

Yes, seems it has the same
designs, size and places of
windows.
Then I walk further and I saw this
another building.

New Lesson Good, what else? Looks like it has patterns
Very Good! It has patterns.
That is our topic for today!
Patterns and Algebra but first let
us have a deeper understanding
in Patterns before we proceed to
another topic.
Are you ready to learn Grade 3? Yes, Teacher
Okay let’s proceed.
E. Discussing New When we say patterns, it is the
Concepts and repetition of objects. It can be
Practicing New shapes,
Skills #1 colors images and even numbers.

Patterns are not only seen in
manmade and nature but also
seen in mathematics.
When we say patterns there is a
sequence, we know what comes
next.
For example,
A, B, C, D, _?
What comes next?
Okay how about, A, C, A, C, A, _?
What comes next?
A, C, E, G, _?
Very good! It’s letter E, teacher.
How about we try it in numbers?
101, 102, 103, 104, 105, _?
And? It’s letter C, teacher.
Another example.
1050, 950, 1050, 950, 1050, _? H
What is the answer?
Great! 106
What did you notice about the
patterns?
Yes, very good. What else? 950
Great!
There are 2 types of patterns.
These the continuous patterns Looks like other patterns
and the repeating patterns. are repeating.
A, B, C, D, _? Some patterns are
A, C, E, G, _? continuing, teacher
101, 102, 103, 104, 105, _? are

examples of continuous pattern
while,
A, C, A, C, A, _?
1050, 950, 1050, 950, 1050, _?
are the examples of repeating
patterns.
Let’s try some of the examples
What comes after 1450?
Great.
What did you notice?
Yes, it is because each number is
100 more than the number before
it.
Did you understand? 1550
Okay. What comes next in the
pattern, Numbers are changing
from lower to high.
55A, 50B, 45A, 40B, 35A, _?
What have you noticed?
Yes, teacher.
Yes! And it is a combination of
repeating patterns and continuous
pattern.
Now, if you are already familiar 30B
with the pattern, let us practice
this There is letters and
numbers.
What is missing in each pattern?

Yes teacher.
F. Discussing New Algebra
Concepts and
Practicing New Now, I have a scenario here!
Skills #2 Who among you here likes to go
to birthday party? The students will answer
Okay, here’s the scenario.
Last time I went to a birthday
party and they were serving
burgers, but 2 people didn’t show
up so meaning there are 2
burgers left on each plate. Only 3
burgers are eaten, 3 empty
plates. Now, how many burgers
were there at the start? It’s 5, teacher.
So, here’s where algebra comes
in and this is also part of our
lesson. Just like patterns there
were some missing parts that we
need to complete.
Here’s the algebraic expression,
Patterns and Algebra Page 7 of 12
Republic of the Philippines
CAMARINES NORTE STATE COLLEGE
F. Pimentel Avenue, Brgy. 2, Daet, Camarines Norte – 4600, Philippines
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
X – 3 burgers = 2 burgers
We have to find the x, more like x-
3=2
X is the total numbers of burgers
and 3 are the total numbers of
eaten numbers while 2 are
numbers of burgers left (uneaten)
To figure out the answer we have
to add the 3 and the 2. Since
anything that jumps into = signs,
flip its sign.
So, 3+2=5,
The total numbers of burgers are? 5 burgers
Okay very good.
Let us try it without any scenario
just an algebraic expression.
What is the missing number?
__ - 15 = 20
What is the answer? The answer is 35,
teacher.
Why do you think 15 is the
answer? Because we simply add
the number 15 and 20 to
get the answer 35
Okay very good.
We can change the operation and
solve the remaining two numbers
to find the missing number or
value.
Here is another example in
division.
Example number 1.
?÷8=7
What do you think is the answer?
Why? The answer is 56,
teacher.
Patterns and Algebra Page 8 of 12

We change the operation
from division to
multiplication. So, 8
multiply by 7 is equal to
56. Then 56 ÷ 8 is equal
Okay, another example. to 7.
? × 12 = 96 what is the answer?
Why?
The answer is 8, teacher.
We change the operation
from multiplication to
division. So, 96 divided
by 12 is equal to 8. Then
8 multiply by 12 is equal
Very Good Class! I have a to 96.
question. Is it changing operation
is always applicable in every
problem? Let us find out.
I have here a different situation.
45 ÷ __ = 5
What do you think the answer?
Why?
The answer is 5, teacher.
Because, we did not
change the operation and
just simply solve 45
divided 5 equals to 9. So,
Very good. 45÷9=5
Changing operation is not always
applicable in every situation.
Another example.
204 ÷ __ = 68 what is the
answer?
Why? The answer is 3, teacher
We simply solve 204
divided by 68 and the
answer is 3. So, 204 ÷ 3
=68
Now this is the last example.
5 × __ = 20 what is the answer?
Why do you think 4 is the

answer? The answer is 4, teacher.
We divided 20 by 5 to get
the answer 4. So, 5 × 4 =
Very good class! 20
G. Generalizations Class, did you understand our Yes, teacher
lesson?
Very Good. What are the
important facts that you learned Patterns is a repetition of
from pattern? images, shapes, colors,
letters and even
numbers.
In solving problems in algebra, is
it changing the operations are No, teacher.
always applicable? Because, there situations
Why do you think? that doesn’t need to
change the operation.
Do you think that Patterns and
Algebra are important not only in It is important because if
mathematics but also in our daily there’s a pattern, there’s
lives? Why or why not? a sequence. We can
predict what will comes
next and solve the
missing problem.
Very good Grade 3.
