INTRODUCTION
The Wireline conveyed DTI Kickover Tool (KOT) enables the
reliable, repeatable running and retrieval of gas lift valves into
compatible side pocket mandrels. Typical side pocket mandrels
include type KBMG and KBUG.

DESCRIPTION

Each KOT is designed to operate in one specific tubing size and

for one specific valve size. The DTI Kickover Tool outlined below
is designed to run and pull 1" valves.

The trigger engagement in the Side Pocket Mandrel (SPM)

ensures the correct orientation, then picking up further brings the
tool into the "kicked over" position. Gas lift valves size 1" may then
be installed or removed from the SPM using the correct running or
retrieval tool (see data sheet). Typical valves include type BKF-6,
BKF-3, DCK-2, LK-3, E Dummy, BKO.
Once the KOT has been fully picked up through the SPM the
locator pin shears and the tool locks in the rigid position to allow
the BHA to pass through other SPM's.
DTI Kickover Tools for l" valves are available for SPM sizes 2 3/8,
2718,3%,4 and 4%.

OPERATION RUNNING
Standard wireline tool string should include sufficient stem bar weight, hydraulic jar,
link jar and a swivel joint above the kickover tool. Ensure the correct running tool for
the gas lift valve being run is fitted to the bottom of the KOT. lnstall a 3/16" brass
shear pin in trigger key and pin the gas lift valve into running tool.
Lower the KOT several feet past the side pocket mandrel desired to be set.

1. Raise KOT slowly with the wireline until enough weight increase is noted to
indicate the KOT has oriented and reached end of slot in the mandrel
orienting sleeve, (An increase of 25# will usually show this.)
2. Grhdually apply an "extra" 200# load upward pull on the wireline. This will
ensure that the KOT is kicked over and latched in place. Wells deviated more
than 60 Deg. may take 300# extra.
3. Lower the valve slowly into the side pocket. The positioning tool will
automatically align the valve with the pocket.
4. ll lor some reason (not kicked over enough to latch) the valve misses the
pocket, try again from step 2 and increase the "extra" load 100 pounds.
5. Normal wireline procedures may now be followed for jarring the valve into
place and shearing off the valve.
6. The KOT will then be raised back to the mandrel orienting sleeve. The KOT
trigger will shoulder the orienting slot and will shear the 3/16" pin holding the
trigger key in place by over pull jar action.
7. Once this is done, the KOT kigger key will permanently retract so the trigger
will no longer orient at each side pocket mandrel as it is pulled thru returning
to the surface. The kicked over arm of the tool will also straighten out and lock
In the straight position to come out of the hole. This feature eliminates
considerable wear due to rubbing on the tubing walls.
8. When the tool is back on the surface, the key trigger must be re-pinned and
another valve attached to the running tool. (The key and trigger may be line
up by hand and the old pin tapped out and a new pin inserted with the help of
a 1/8" pin punch).

OPERATION PULLING
1. Ensure the correct Pulling tool for the gas lift valve being pulled is fitted to the
bottom of the KOT.
2. Repeat steps 1-4.
3. Normal wireline procedures may now be followed for latching and pulling the
valve.
4. Repeat steps 6-8.

GLV PULLING SCHEMATIC
Schematic 1, shows the kot run
below the mandrel. Since the kot is
Iocked in a rigid position, it is I

designed not to kick over

accidentally.
Schematic 2, shows the kot raised
until the key engages the sleeve in
the mandrel. Continued upward \
movement rotates the kot until the
key enters a slot, When the key
reaches the top of the slot, the
weight indicator shows increased
weight signalling that the tool is
properly orientated.

Schematic 3, shows that with

additional pull, the pivot arm is
designed to kick and lock out. This
action locates the valve or pulling I
tool above the pocket or latch on
the gas lift valve.
Schematic 4, shows the kot is
locked in the offset position and the
mandrel is guiding the valve or
pulling tool to accurately land the frt
valve or engage the latch on the ...
valve. I

Schematic 5, illustrates straight,

the key reaches the top of the slot. ll t"t
This action allows the trigger to
glide freely out of the slot and

arm reaches the small upper
section of the mandrel, it is
designed to snap back and lock into
its vertical running position,
reducing drag on the tool and valve
as it rs removed.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Ensure all parts are clean, oiled and threads greased. SAE 30 oil and Molycote 77 is
recommended. Always use new shear pins and where necessary, set screws and
dowel pins. Redress kits are inexpensive and readily available.

1 .
Pin lower adapter (18) to pivot arm (15) with spring ('16) and ball (17) using
pin (19) and secure with set screws (8), aligning the detents provided.
2. lnsert lever plunger (9) in housing (2) to make sure of sliding freedom and full
travel.
3. Adsemble spring (10) and latch spring guide (13) to lever plunger (9) retain
latch (12) with pin (1 1) thro lever plunger (9) and latch (12). Note, this
operation requires that the Spring Guide/ Latch Spring is compressed over
100lbs and this is best achieved by 2 persons- one to compress the spring
and one to insert the pin.
4. Pin pivot arm (15) to main housing (2) with pin (14) and secure with set
screws (8), aligning the detents provided . lf pin fits loosely, stake edges of
hole to retain it.
5. Assemble key (3) to Trigger (5) with pivot pin (4).
6. lnsert lever plunger assembly with spring (6) in hole in slot. (Make sure
housing lD is clean and plunger is lubricated with 30 weight oil or Molykote.)
7. With slots in plunger (9) and housing (2) aligned, depress spring (6) and insert
plunger into housing (2).
8. lnstall Hoisting Plug (1) and screw in to align 114" hole in plunger (9) with
11132" hole in housing (2). lnsert trigger (5) thru slot in housing.
9. Pin trigger (5) to plunger with pin (7) making sure pin is centred in plunger (9).
Tighten hoisting plug (1) and install 3/16" shear pin (4A) through key (3) and
trigger (5).
10. Check for depressing freedom of trigger (5). lt should depress and return
quite freely but not protrude past landing stop.
11.Tool is now fully assembled and may be activated by applying enough force
(approx. 200lbs) on trigger (5) to move the plunger (9) forward 1/32" and kick
over the tool.

DISASSEMBLY lNSTRUCTIONS
1. Place the KOT assembly in a G-Vice, and clamp Housing (2) behind the
trigger, without using excessive force. Ensure the Pivot Arm (15) is in the
straight position and not kicked over,
2. Unscrew the Hoisting Plug (1) from the KOT Housing (2).
2 Remove the two Locking Screws (8) and tap out the Pivot Pin (14). Remove

the Pivot Arm (1 5).

4. Push the Lever Plunger (9) forward slightly until the Trigger Pin (4) aligns with
the hole in the Housing (2). Tap out the pin (4).
E
With the pin removed, push the Trigger (5) down so that the Lever Plunger (9)
cdn be pushed out of the Housing (2).
b. Once out, the Trigger (5) and Spring (6) are free to be removed.
7. It is not usually necessary to remove the Latch/ Latch Spring/ Guide (10, 12,
13). However, it may be required for periodic cleaning. Note- the spring is pre-
loaded to around 100 lbs so disassembly is best achieved by two persons,
one to tap out the pin and one to hold the latch.
t,. The same can be said of the Lower Adaptor/ Spring/ Ball ('16,17,1 8). For
periodic cleaning, hold the Pivot arm in a vice.
o Remove the two Locking Screws (8) and tap out the Lower Pivot Pin (19).
Remove the ball (17) and the Spring (16).
'10, Ensure all parts are in good order, referring to the maintenance section of this
manual.

MAINTENANCE
The DTI Wireline Kick Over Tool has been designed to give long and reliable
service. However, it is strongly recommended that the tool should be disassembled
and thoroughly cleaned after each use to prevent the build-up of deposits, which
could interfere with the operation of the tool. Thorough cleaning is particularly
important when the tool has been used in a corrosive environment.
Ensure all parts, threads and seals are clean and ljghtly oiled or greased. (Molykote
77 or SAE 30 oil is recommended).
After every run the tool should be completely stripped, cleaned and, if necessary, all
seals and shear pins should be replaced. During inspection any damaged or worn
parts should be replaced.

Particular attention should be paid to pivoting parts and shear pins. The Trigger, Key,
Lever Plunger, Prvot Arm and Pivot Pins are especially critrcal and should all be
inspected for wear, damage and corrosion.
