Phase Change

This document provides information about phase changes of matter. It defines phase change as when matter changes from one state (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) to another due to the addition or removal of energy, usually in the form of heat. The document then discusses different types of phase changes including melting, evaporation, condensation, freezing, sublimation, and deposition. It provides examples and illustrations of each. The latter part of the document describes a laboratory activity on the phase changes of water and includes objectives, materials, procedures, and discussion questions.

GOOD JOB
EVERYONE!
Learning Objectives
1 define phase change
2 identify the different Phase Change in Matter

appreciate the importance of phase changes in our

3 daily lives.
PHASE CHANGE
- is when matter changes to from one
state (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) to
another. Phase changes occur when
energy (usually in the form of heat) is
added to or removed from a
substance, causing its particles to
rearrange and its physical properties
to change.
Different
Phase
Change In
Matter
1. MELTING (SOLID TO LIQUID PHASE)

- Melting is the process by which a

substance changes from the solid phase
to the liquid phase. In the melting process,
molecules became loosely packed (liquid
phase) from being closely packed (solid
phase). This happens when the energy
(heat) is added to a solid to change its
stage to liquid.
SOLID TO LIQUID PHASE
2. EVAPORATION (LIQUID TO GAS PHASE)

- Evaporation is the process by which the

matter undergoes the spontaneous
transition from a liquid phase to a gas
phase. In this process, the molecules
of liquid with the addition of heat creates
vapor where gas molecules spread
out freely and moving constantly.
LIQUID TO GAS PHASE
3. CONDENSATION (GAS TO LIQUID PHASE)

- Condensation, the opposite of

evaporation, is the change in the state of
matter from the gas phase to the liquid
phase. The molecules may then collide
with the inner surface of these molecules
do so, some may stay on the accumulate
and form droplets.
GAS TO LIQUID PHASE
4.FREEZING (SOLIDIFICATION)
-The change from liquid to solid as
a substance loses heat and
reaches its freezing point, which is
the same temperature as the
melting point but in reverse
direction.
FREEZING
5. SUBLIMATION
- The direct transition from solid to gas
without passing through the liquid phase,
occurring under certain temperature and
pressure conditions. Dry ice (solid carbon
dioxide) sublimating into carbon dioxide
gas is a common example.
Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) sublimating into carbon
dioxide gas
6. DEPOSITION

-The direct change from gas to solid,

by passing the liquid state, such as
frost formation on cold surfaces from
water vapor in the air.

LABORATORY
ACTIVITY:
PHASE CHANGES OF
MATTER
ACTIVITY:
What changes take place when
ice turns into liquid water?
Objectives
After performing this activity, you should be able to:

1. Describe what happens to water when it is heated and cooled;

2. Represent through drawing/illustrations what happens to the
particles of water when it is heated, then cooled, and ice when it
turns to liquid
3. Explain the process taking place using the particle model of
matter
Materials

2 pieces, ice cubes

1 piece watch glass or saucer
Procedure
1. Put one piece of an ice cube on the watch glass or small
saucer.
2. Observe what happens to the ice cubes after 2 minutes.
3. You may do any of the following:
write a description or draw a cartoon or illustrate to show
how the particles of water behave as ice changes to a
liquid.
Guide Questions

Q1. Explain what is happening to the particle of water in ice

as it turns to liquid using the particle model of matter.

Q2. Explain what will happen to the liquid on the watch

glass or saucer if it is transferred into a small container
and left inside the freezer after a few minutes?
Guide Questions

In our daily lives, identify

activities/ situations that uses
Phase Change in matter.
Guide Questions

1. What is the importance of phase change in

our daily life?
2. How does phase change affect you as an
individual?
3. What is the difference between the 3 basic
phase change?
Guide Questions
1. What is the chemistry term for a phase change when a
solid becomes a liquid?
2. What is the chemistry term for a phase change when a
liquid becomes a gas?
3. Describe the phase change that occurs during
solidification (freezing).
4. Describe the phase change that occurs during
condensation.
