Higher Education in the 21 Century
(Week 1)
Introduction
We now live in a highly complex world. While the opening up markets and cross border
investments have led to economic growth, it has led to massive income inequalities between
countries. New technologies have emerged lifting the conditions of millions of people, but it has
also led to technology divides. New careers are being created every year and yet our
educational institutions are still cast in a mold that has been cast a hundred years ago. The
profile of learners and their needs for professional continuing education have changed and
universities cannot cope with the burgeoning demand. How should universities respond to
these changes?
Learning objective
At the end of this module, you should be able to explain the recent global developments and
their implications to higher education.
