It discusses how the modern world is highly complex with issues like income inequality and technology divides. Educational institutions are still operating with models from 100 years ago but learner needs and demands have changed. The learning objective is to explain recent global developments and their implications for higher education. Students are asked to read materials on societal trends and challenges facing universities today. They are then asked reflection questions on factors changing life and work, which changes have most affected education, and how their university should respond to changes.

Strategic Planning in ODeL

Module 1
st
Higher Education in the 21 Century
(Week 1)

Introduction

We now live in a highly complex world. While the opening up markets and cross border
investments have led to economic growth, it has led to massive income inequalities between
countries. New technologies have emerged lifting the conditions of millions of people, but it has
also led to technology divides. New careers are being created every year and yet our
educational institutions are still cast in a mold that has been cast a hundred years ago. The
profile of learners and their needs for professional continuing education have changed and
universities cannot cope with the burgeoning demand. How should universities respond to
these changes?

Learning objective

At the end of this module, you should be able to explain the recent global developments and
their implications to higher education.

The Virtual University: Models & Messages; Lessons from Case Studies edited by Susan
D’Antoni (pp. 35-70) at http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0014/001465/146558e.pdf
Specifically:
The new century: societal paradoxes and major trends by Gudmund Hernes (pp. 35 -48)
The university: current challenges and opportunities by Robin Mason (pp 49-70)

Guide questions:

After reading the materials, reflect on the following questions:

• What are the major factors that have changed the way people live and work nowadays?
• Of all the recent changes in the world, which do you think have affected the educational
sector the most?
• How should universities, like yours, respond to these changes?
