Intro 2 Windows
Window – is the viewing area of the screen showing the portion of the file or data
that is visible.
Cursor – is the blinking underscore that shows where data may enter next.
Scrolling – is the activity that lets you move through the document forward and
backward.
Document – a file you create when you save your work in a program.
Start Button – is the main object on the desktop and usually located in the lower
left corner of the screen on the Task Bar.
Contain a pop-up menu about programs and functions that help you do things in
Windows.
➢ Program Menu – is the starting place for accessing any of the programs
that are installed on your computer.
➢ Setting Menu – lets you access to control for many parts of your
computer, printer and the task bar.
➢ Find Menu – allows you to easily find specific files or folders on your
computer.
➢ Help Menu – you can access the Windows on-line help system.
➢ Shutdown – you can select from one of several different ways to shut
down your computer. The safe way is turning off the computer.
Help Screen – presents detailed information that gives the user help in finding or
using commands.
Recycled Bin – is the temporary storage area for files that have been deleted
from the drive.
Disk Operating System – is a single task operating system (meaning it can only
one program at a time).
Windows Applets
➢ Notepad – is an ASCII text editor
➢ Sound Recorder - is used for recording, editing, and playing wave file
(sound files)
➢ Media Player – can play AVI files (motion video with sound), MIDI
(musical instruments) files, music CD’s and other multimedia file formats.
➢ Restored – the window is running at the size it was left the time it was
resized (by dragging the window corners or window borders). These
states are controlled by the two (two of three Minimize, Restore and
Maximize) inner buttons located on the right side of the Title Bar. The
rightmost button on the Title Bar. The last rightmost button on the Title Bar
(an X) is the Close Button
Windows Mouse Functions
➢ Click – pressing and releasing the left mouse button to select
➢ Double Click – clicking the left mouse button twice in rapid succession to
activate an icon. Generally, open a window or run a program.
- to double click on an icon, place the mouse pointer over the object
and press the left mouse button twice very quickly.
➢ Drag – you can move an object to another location using the click and
drag feature. Pressing and holding down the left mouse button then
moving the mouse with the left mouse button held down thereby moving
an icon or object (usually for a copy or move operation)
- to click and drag an object, place the mouse pointer over the
object and hold down the left mouse button as you drag the object
to a new location by moving the mouse.
➢ Right Click – open a pop-up menu containing actions you can perform on
the object. To activate shortcut or advance menus
- to right click an object, place the mouse pointer over the object
and click the right mouse button.
Menu Bar – is the row of command options displayed across the top or button of
the screen.
Submenu – refers to a menu that appears when you chose another menu
