Eloisa Jasmin F. Perez E3Q - Engineering Data Analysis Formative Assessment

This document contains the responses of a civil engineering student, Eloisa Jasmin F. Perez, to questions on a formative assessment in her Engineering Data Analysis course. In her first response, she defines data as collected information used to analyze situations and make decisions, and provides examples of data in civil engineering like construction costs and contractor bids. Her second response describes various statistical measures that can be used to analyze engineering data like mean, median, standard deviation, and z-scores. Her third response emphasizes the importance of statistics and probability in civil engineering for robustness analysis, risk assessment, and dealing with variability in areas like soil pressure and river flows. She gives the example of using probability and historical wind speed data to determine design

E3Q – Engineering Data Analysis
Formative Assessment

Answer the following questions using the online text function (minimum 5 sentences):

1. What is data? Cite some example of data related to your field and briefly elaborate.

Data is a collection of information such as quantities, characters, and numbers that is used to
analyze a particular situation, make decisions, and serve as the basis for calculations. Data can come in
the form of text, observations, figures, images, numbers, graphs, or even symbols. In line with this
matter, I am currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in civil engineering as my future profession, and data
is one of the important foundations of this industry, for it involves gathering and studying data to form
insights that can be used to make decisions. Especially in our field, we need to take it into consideration
when making use of huge amounts of data acquired through advanced technical computing systems.
This is for us to ensure the safety and efficiency of a certain engineering project. For example, during the
construction of an infrastructure, there is a need for us to break down the costs for each job and
determine the profitability, as well as for us to know which subcontractors can provide the most
accurate bids and which can help us give our clients the best, safer, and most sustainable projects we
could offer.

2. How do you measure the given data example?

We can measure the given data example through analyzing and understanding the results,
explain data variations, or predict future data using statistical techniques and equations that can be
applied to a data set. We can compute the following statistical information through their average value
(mean), the value that occurs most frequently (mode), how much each measurement deviates from the
mean on average (standard deviation of the mean), the range of values that your data set falls within,
and the middle point between the set's lowest and highest values (median); this is for us to look for the
central tendency. On the other hand, when we look for numerical measures of variability, we need to
use the standard deviation, which is the average amount of variability in our data set, for it tells us, on
average, how far each value lies from the mean. A high standard deviation means that values are
generally far from the mean, while a low standard deviation indicates that values are clustered close to
the mean. We can also use the z-score which indicates how much a given value differs from the standard
deviation. The Z-score, or standard score, is the number of standard deviations a given data point lies
above or below the mean. The deviation is essentially a reflection of the amount of variability within a
given data set. Engineering relies heavily on statistics since it offers methods for analyzing data that has
been acquired.

3. What is the importance of statistics and probability to your field? Give some practical applications.

Statistics and probability play an important role in civil engineering because they serve as a
practical tool for robustness analysis, measurement system error analysis, test data analysis,
probabilistic risk assessment, estimation of model parameters, identification of probability distributions,
determination of dependencies among variables, and many more. As engineers, there is a need for us to
evaluate whether a certain set of data provides sufficient evidence to draw conclusions, which can also
help us use the proper methods to collect the data, employ the correct analyses, and effectively present
the results. In our field, through a thorough understanding of statistics and probability, we can deal with
the variability that affects engineers' structures, soil pressure, river flows, and the like. There is a need
for us to analyze the extreme events that can affect the construction of our buildings and structures, as
well as to determine the possible risk and uncertainty that can also affect the construction, and to make
good decisions when it comes to creating sustainable and economic structures. Lastly, when designing
for high-rise buildings, we need to consider the effect of the winds, like the hurricane, we should know
the probability of wind speed is used to determine the speed of wind that the structure needs to
withstand at a particular location. Historical data is examined by a committee, and a wind speed is based
on the frequency of storms exceeding a particular speed in a given year.
