Practice Problem Set - 3

The document describes 3 practice problems involving chemical reaction rates: 1) A bomb is filled with reactant A and heated, causing a 2A → B reaction. Pressure measurements over time are given. A rate equation fitting the data is required. 2) A liquid phase irreversible reaction A → B + C occurs in a CSTR. Effluent concentration of A is measured for varying space time and rate to determine the rate law and order. 3) An A → R reaction occurs in a batch reactor. Concentration of A over time is given. The conversion of A after 5 hours is required for an initial concentration of 500 mol/m3.

Practice Problem Set 3

1. A small reaction bomb fitted with a sensitive pressure-measuring device is flushed out and
then filled with pure reactant A at 1 atm pressure. The operation is carried out at 25 OC, a
temperature low enough that the reaction does not proceed to any appreciable extent. The
temperature is then raised as rapidly as possible to 100°C by plunging the bomb into boiling
water, and the readings in Table below are obtained.

The stoichiometry of the reaction is 2A → B, and after leaving the bomb in the bath over the
weekend the contents are analyzed for A; none can be found.

Find a rate equation in units of moles, liters, and minutes which will satisfactorily fit the data.

Time,
min Pi, atm
1 1.14
2 1.04
3 0.982
4 0.94
5 0.905
6 0.87
7 0.85
8 0.832
9 0.815
10 0.8
15 0.754
20 0.728

2. The liquid phase irreversible reaction A à B + C is carried out in a CSTR. To learn the
rate law v0 and hence τ is varied and the effluent concentration of species A is recorded as a
function of space time. Pure A enters the reactor at a concentration of 2mol/dm3. Steady state
conditions exist when measurements are recorded.

Determine the reaction order and the specific reaction rate.

3. Aqueous A at a concentration CA0 = 1 mol/liter is introduced into a batch reactor where it
reacts away to form product R according to stoichiometry A → R.
The concentration of A in the reactor is monitored at various times, as shown below:
t, min 0 100 200 300 400
CA, mol/m3 1000 500 333 250 200

For CA0 = 500 mol/m3 find the conversion of reactant after 5 hours in the batch reactor.
