Objective:

Describe research design.

Recognize the importance of research design in doing research project.

Formulate research design.

Subject: Research 3

Grade Level: Grade 9

Learning across curriculum:

1. Mathematics - Students can use statistical analysis to interpret data gathered in

their research projects.

2. Science - Students can apply the scientific method in designing their research
experiments.

3. Social Studies - Students can explore different research methodologies used in

studying historical events.

Review Motivation:

1. Show a video clip showcasing the impact of research in solving real-world

problems.

2. Engage students in a discussion about their previous research experiences and

what they learned from them.

3. Share success stories of individuals who conducted research projects and how it
contributed to their personal growth and achievements.

Activity 1: Introduction to Research Design

Materials: PowerPoint presentation, handouts

Instructions:
1. Present a PowerPoint presentation on the basics of research design, including its
definition and importance.

2. Discuss different types of research designs (e., experimental, descriptive,

correlational).

3. Distribute handouts containing examples of research projects and ask students to

identify the research design used.

4. Facilitate a class discussion on the advantages and limitations of different

research designs.

Rubrics:

- Correctly identified research design: 5 points- Active participation in class

discussion: 10 points

Assessment questions:

1. What is research design, and why is it important in conducting a research project?

2. Provide an example of a research project and identify the appropriate research

design to use.

Activity 2: Formulating Research Design

Materials: Research project scenarios, chart paper, markers

Instructions:

1. Divide the class into small groups.

2. Provide each group with a research project scenario.

3. Instruct the groups to formulate a research design for their assigned scenario,
considering the research objectives and available resources.

4. Each group will present their research design on chart paper.

Rubrics:

- Clear and logical research design: 10 points

- Effective presentation of research: 10 points

Assessment questions:

1. What factors should be considered when formulating a research design?

2. Evaluate the research design presented by another group. What are its strengths
and weaknesses?

Activity 3: Applying Research Design

Materials: Research materials (books, articles, internet access), writing

materials

Instructions:

1. Instruct students to choose a research topic of their interest.

2. Provide guidelines on how to conduct research using their chosen research

design.

3. Students will gather information and data related to their research topic using
appropriate research methods.

4. Students will present their research findings and discuss how their research
design influenced the outcome.

Rubrics:

- Thoroughness and accuracy of research findings: 15 points

- Clear presentation and analysis of research design's impact: 10 points

Assessment questions:

1. How did your research design influence the outcome of your research project?

2. Reflect on your research experience. What challenges did you encounter in

applying your research design, and how did you overcome them?

Analysis:

Analyze the outcome of each activity by reviewing the students' understanding of

research design, their ability to apply it in different scenarios, and their presentation
skills.
Abstraction:

Guide students in extracting key concepts and principles of research design based
on their analysis and reflections.

Application:

Present students with a real-life problem that requires them to formulate a research
design to address the issue. For example, they can design a research project to
investigate the effectiveness of a new teaching method in improving student
performance.

Assessment:

Teachers can assess students' learning by evaluating their participation in class

discussions, their ability to correctly identify research designs, their formulation of
research designs, and their application of research design in real-life problems.

Assignment:

Assign students to conduct a small-scale research project using a specific research

design. They should present their findings and discuss the implications of their
research design in a written report.
