4. (a) (i) A spoon is dropped from an artificial satellite orbiting around the earth in
a circular orbit. Will the spoon reach the surface of the earth? Explain
(02 marks)
(ii) calculate the distance from the earth to the point where the gravitational
field due to the earth and the moon cancel out. Given that earth-moon
distance is 3.8 × 108 m and the mass of the earth is 81 times that of the
moon. (04 marks)
(b) A sphere and cylinder having the same mass and radius start from the rest at
the same point on an inclined plane and they are left to roll down the plane.
Determine which one reaches at the bottom first? (04 marks)
5. (a) (i) Explain why at least two fixed points are required to define a temperature
scale. (02 marks)
(ii) Mention the type of thermometer which is most suitable for calibrations
and what are the two advantages and 2 disadvantages of the thermometer
mentioned. (03 marks)
(b) (i) Explain why in cold countries, windows of modern buildings are double
grazed? (02 marks)
(ii) A spherical black body of radius 12cm radiate 450w at 500k. If the radius
of a spherical black body were halved and temperature were doubled.
What will be the power radiated? (03 marks)
6. (a) When water is boiled under a pressure of 2 atm the boiling point is 120◦ C. At
this pressure 1kg of water has a volume of 10−3 m3 and 2kg has a volume of
1.648m3 . Compute
(i) work done when 1kg of steam is formed at this temperature (03 marks)
(ii) increase in internal energy. (03 marks)
(b) A quantity of oxygen is compressed isothermally until its pressure is doubled.
It is then allowed to expand adiabatically until its original volume is restored.
Find the final pressure in terms of the initial pressure. (04 marks)
7. (a) (i) Briefly explain three sources and effects of air pollution. (03 marks)
(ii) Rainfall may affect the plant growth in both positive and negative way.
Explain. (02 marks)

(b) (i) The main interior of the earth is believed to be in molten form. What
seismic evidence that support this belief? (02 marks)
(ii) Describe the soil temperature with regard to agricultural physics which
causes lower crops growth at particular area. (03 marks)
8. (a) (i) How does p-type semiconductor differ from N-type semiconductor? give
two points. (02 marks)
(ii) Briefly explain the effect of temperature and impurity to the conductivity
of semiconductor. (02 marks)
(b) In figure below, the VBB supply can be varied from 0V to 6.0V. The silicon
transistor has β = 100 and Rβ = kΩ, RC = 4kΩ, VCC = 6.0V. Assume that
