1. This paper consists of section A and B with a total of ten (10) questions.
2. Answer all questions in section A and two (2) questions from section B.
3. Section A carries seventy (70) marks and section B carries thirty (30) marks.
4. Mathematical tables and non-programable calculators may be used.
5. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer booklet(s).

SECTION A (60 marks)


Answer all questions in this section.
1. (a) (i) State the principle of “Homogeneity of dimension” (02 marks)
(ii) A small steel of radius r is allowed to fall under gravity through a column
of viscous liquid of coefficient of viscosity η. After sometime the
velocity of the ball attains a constant value VT called terminal velocity.
The terminal velocity depends upon the weight of the ball, mg, the
coefficient of viscosity η and the radius of the ball r,. By using method
of dimensions, determine the relation expressing terminal velocity.

(b) (i) Briefly explain what is meant by the term “least count” (02 marks)
(ii) In an experiment to determine the spring constant, variation of the mass
added to the scale pan tends to thervariation of the periodic time which is

governed by the equation T= 2π , calculate the spring constant

in N/m given the following experimental date
T= (3.28 ± 0.30)s, M= (100 ± 0.16)g, and m= (10 ± 0.05)g

2. (a) (i) Explain why horizontal velocity in projectile motion is always constant.
(02 marks)
(ii) A projectile with kinetic energy 500J is fired for maximum horizontal
range. what is the kinetic energy of the projectile at the highest point?
(03 marks)
(b) (i) A person is better off falling on a wooden floor than a concrete floor.
(02 marks)
(ii) 10g bullet is fired with a velocity of 300m/s into a pendulum bob which
has a mass of 990g. How high does the pendulum bob with the bullet
embedded swing after the collision? (03 marks)
3. (a) (i) A car is travelling round a bend in a road at a constant speed of 22m/s. The
driver moves along a circular path of radius 25m. Explain why, although
the speed of the driver is constant, his velocity is not constant.
(02 marks)
(ii) A highway road designed for an average speed of 72km/h has a turn of
radius 50m. To what angle must the road be banked so that the cars
travelling at 72km/hr may not overturn. (04 marks)
(b) Consider two discs as shown in the figure below with a massless spring of
force constant 100N/m. Calculate the frequency of oscillations of the spring
(i) when the system is resting on a table. (02 marks)
(ii) when the table is removed and the system is falling freely. (02 marks)

4. (a) (i) A spoon is dropped from an artificial satellite orbiting around the earth in
a circular orbit. Will the spoon reach the surface of the earth? Explain
(02 marks)
(ii) calculate the distance from the earth to the point where the gravitational
field due to the earth and the moon cancel out. Given that earth-moon
distance is 3.8 × 108 m and the mass of the earth is 81 times that of the
moon. (04 marks)
(b) A sphere and cylinder having the same mass and radius start from the rest at
the same point on an inclined plane and they are left to roll down the plane.
Determine which one reaches at the bottom first? (04 marks)
5. (a) (i) Explain why at least two fixed points are required to define a temperature
scale. (02 marks)
(ii) Mention the type of thermometer which is most suitable for calibrations
and what are the two advantages and 2 disadvantages of the thermometer
mentioned. (03 marks)
(b) (i) Explain why in cold countries, windows of modern buildings are double
grazed? (02 marks)
(ii) A spherical black body of radius 12cm radiate 450w at 500k. If the radius
of a spherical black body were halved and temperature were doubled.
What will be the power radiated? (03 marks)
6. (a) When water is boiled under a pressure of 2 atm the boiling point is 120◦ C. At
this pressure 1kg of water has a volume of 10−3 m3 and 2kg has a volume of
1.648m3 . Compute
(i) work done when 1kg of steam is formed at this temperature (03 marks)
(ii) increase in internal energy. (03 marks)
(b) A quantity of oxygen is compressed isothermally until its pressure is doubled.
It is then allowed to expand adiabatically until its original volume is restored.
Find the final pressure in terms of the initial pressure. (04 marks)
7. (a) (i) Briefly explain three sources and effects of air pollution. (03 marks)
(ii) Rainfall may affect the plant growth in both positive and negative way.
Explain. (02 marks)

(b) (i) The main interior of the earth is believed to be in molten form. What
seismic evidence that support this belief? (02 marks)
(ii) Describe the soil temperature with regard to agricultural physics which
causes lower crops growth at particular area. (03 marks)

Answer Two (2) questions in this section

8. (a) (i) How does p-type semiconductor differ from N-type semiconductor? give
two points. (02 marks)
(ii) Briefly explain the effect of temperature and impurity to the conductivity
of semiconductor. (02 marks)
(b) In figure below, the VBB supply can be varied from 0V to 6.0V. The silicon
transistor has β = 100 and Rβ = kΩ, RC = 4kΩ, VCC = 6.0V. Assume that
when the transistor is saturated, VCE = 0V and VBE = 0.7V

of electron being very low. (02 marks)
(ii) The potentiometer is said to be a better device for measuring the potential
difference than a moving coil voltmeter. (02 marks)

(c) (i) Differentiate between attenuation and modulation. (01 marks)
(ii) An audio signal of 1kHz is used to modulate a carrier of 500kHz.
