Lesson

4 Correcting Digital Images

Adobe Photoshop includes a variety of tools and commands for improving the
quality of a photographic image. This lesson provides steps to follow in the process of
retouching a photo intended for a print layout and to web images.

The retouching techniques you apply to an image depend on the parts where
you want to use them. Whether an image is intended for black-and-white publication
on newsprint or for full-color online distribution affects everything from the resolution
of the initial scan to the type of tonal range and color correction that the image
requires. Photoshop supports the CMYK color mode for preparing an image to be
printed using process colors, as well as RGB and other color modes for web and
mobile authoring.

Basic Photo Corrections in Photoshop

Adjust the image quality

Photoshop contains a number of highly effective automatic features that fix
many pictures with very little effort on your part. These may be all you need for certain
types of jobs. However, when you want more control, you can get stuck into some of
the more technical features and options available in Photoshop.

First, we will start by using the adjustments to brighten the colors in an image
file. We will make adjustments using manual controls on another copy of the image.
1. Open an image to edit. In the Layers panel, select the Background layer.
2. Right-click on Background layer then select Duplicate Layer. The Panel Options
menu is also available to duplicate the layer. Duplicate Layer window displays.

3. Type a name in the text field. All other options can be left alone. Click OK.
Duplicating the background ensures you will have a backup of your original in
case anything goes wrong.
4. Remove the visibility of the Background layer by unchecking the layer visibility eye
mark in the Layers panel.

5. Choose Image > Adjustments > Shadow/Highlight. In the Shadow/Highlight
dialogue box, drag the Highlight and Shadow sliders as needed until you think the
image looks good. Make sure that Preview is checked so that you can see the
changes applied to the image window as you work.

6. Click OK to close the dialogue box.

7. Click File > Save As. Then choose JPEG (*.JPG, *.JPEG, *.JPE) as your file format.
Adjust brightness and contrast in a photo
1. In the menu bar, select Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Click Auto.
2. Adjust the Brightness slider to change the overall brightness of the image. Adjust
the Contrast slider to increase or decrease image contrast.
3. Click OK. The adjustments will appear only on the selected layer.

Adjust vibrance of colors

1. In the menu bar, select Image > Adjustments > Vibrance.

2. Experiment by adjusting the sliders. The Vibrance slider affects the intensity of
colors. It has the strongest effect on muted colors in the image. The Saturation
slider increases the color intensity of all colors in the image.
3. Click OK when you’re done.

Adjust hue and saturation of colors.
1. In the menu bar, select Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation.

2. Experiment by adjusting the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness sliders. Your changes
will affect all the colors in the image. The Hue slider changes the colors in an
image. The Saturation slider affects the intensity of colors in an image. The
Lightness slider affects the brightness of colors in an image.

3. To affect only a specific color with these sliders, first go to the drop-down menu at
the top left of the Hue/Saturation dialog box and choose a color range, like
Yellows. Then adjust the Hue, Saturation, or Lightness sliders. These changes will
only affect the selected color range, wherever that color appears in the image.
4. Click OK when you’re done.

1. How can you adjust the contrast of an image automatically?

2. How can the Hue/Saturation command enhance your digital photos?

Directions: Take a picture of your five favorite food. For each food, enhance the photo
by using each image adjustment. Show the comparison between the original and the
enhanced picture. Write a brief explanation about your work.
