2 Image Cropping

digital images. It helps to bring out the most important features in your image and it
focuses on the viewers’ attention on these features. Cropping allows you to make a
standard photo size image.

Activity 1
Directions: Using the Crop Tool
The Crop Tool allows you to make a precised selection of an image you wish to edit. It
allows you to select an area of an image and discard everything outside this area.
Although cropping reduces the dimensions of an image, it is not the same as resizing.
Whereas resizing reduces or enlarges the entire image and everything in it, cropping
does not alter the size of the image content at all.
To crop with the Crop Tool, follow these steps:
1. Begin by opening Adobe Photoshop CS6. On a PC, click Start> Programs>
Adobe> Photoshop CS6, or click on the shortcut on the desktop.
2. We will be using Free Penguins in South Africa 8 Stock Photo from
https://www.freeimages.com. Download and save your image.
3. Navigate to image location on your computer. Select the file and click Open.
4. Select the crop tool in the toolbox.
5. It will automatically select your entire image. Drag the edges to fit the
dimensions you desire.

There are several ways to crop images in Adobe Photoshop:
1. Cropping with the Crop Tool
2. Cropping to a specific size
3. Cropping with the Marquee Tool
Cropping to a specific size
If you wish to print your digital photos or other images on standard size photo paper,
you will have to crop your images to a specific size, such as 8 inches by 10 inches. To
crop an image to a specific size, do the following:
1. Open the image you wish to crop.
2. Select the Crop Tool from the Toolbox.
3. In the Options bar, specify the values for Width and Height.
4. Click in your image and drag the cropping border. Notice that the border is
constrained. You cannot make it wider or longer than the specified values. For
example, if you entered 8 for Width and 10 for Height, whatever size you make the
border, the area within it will fit on an 8x10 photo.
5. Once you are completely satisfied with your cropped image, press Enter.

down Shift to constrain the Crop tool and draw a
perfectly square crop box. The areas that will be
removed will appear as a grey shield. The areas
we’ll keep remain 100% visible.
2. Get some balance
In the Options bar, set Crop Guide Overlay to Rule
of Thirds. Drag inside the crop window to make the
intersecting lines overlap the eyes. Drag outside the
crop window to rotate it, correcting the model’s
head tilt and creating a symmetrical portrait.
3. Creative cropping
Drag the crop window right to remove half of the
face. The positions of the remaining features still
correspond to the rule of thirds. We have an eye,
nose and mouth in the left third, hair in the middle
and space at the right. Hit Enter.
