Assignment 1 MA1240

This document contains 11 probability questions involving random variables, probability distributions, conditional probability, and experiments with dice and random selection. Some questions ask to calculate probabilities of events occurring, find probability distributions, or determine conditional probabilities given additional information. The problems cover a range of fundamental probability concepts.

Assignment 1

MA1240 Probability and Random Variables

1. Two defective tubes get mixed up with 2 good ones. The tubes are tested, one by one, until
both defective are found. What is the probability that the last defective tube is obtained on
(i) the second test(ii) the third test?

2. A box contains tags marked 1, 2,3,…..n. Two tags are chosen at random without
replacement. Find the probability that the numbers on the tags will be consecutive integer

3. A consignment of 15 tubes contains 4 defectives. The tubes are selected at random, one by
one, and examined, what is the probability that the ninth one examined is the last defective.

4. An urn contains 10 white and 3 black balls. Another urn contains 3 white and 5 black balls.
Two balls are drawn from the first urn and placed in the second urn and then 1 ball is taken
from the latter. What is the probability that it is a white ball?

5. In a bolt factory, machines A, B and C produce 25, 35 and 40 % of the total output,
respectively. Of their outputs, 5 ,4 and 2 % , respectively, are defective bolts. If a bolt is
chosen from the combined output, what is the probability that it is defective? If a bolt
chosen at random is found to be defective, what is the probability that it was produced by
machine B.?

6. A random variable X has the following probability distribution.

X: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
P(X): 0 k 2k 2k 3k 𝑘2 2𝑘 2 7𝑘 2 + 𝑘

Find (i) the value of k (ii) P((1.5 < 𝑋 < 3.5)

7. The joint pmf of (X,Y) is given by p(x,y)=k(2x+3y), x=0,1,2 and y=1,2,3 find all the
marginal and conditional distributions.

8. Ten cards numbered 1 to 10 are placed in a box, mixed up thoroughly and then one card
is drawn randomly. If it is known that the number on the drawn card is more than 3, what
is the probability that it is an even number? [Ans 4/7]
9. In a school, there are 1000 students, out of which 430 are girls. It is known that out of
430, 10% of the girls study in class XII. What is the probability that a student chosen
randomly studies in Class XII given that the chosen student is a girl? [Ans 0.1]
10. A die is thrown three times. Events A and B are defined as below:
A : 4 on the third throw B : 6 on the first and 5 on the second throw
Find the probability of A given that B has already occurred. [Ans 1/6]

11. A die is thrown twice and the sum of the numbers appearing is observed to be 6. What is
the conditional probability that the number 4 has appeared at least once? [Ans: 2/5]
