Question 2/5

Create a mood board of AT LEAST 3 environment based sets of backgrounds which you like by selecting several images
per setting. Say where you got them from and why you like them. They MUST be from 2d animations.

Environment 1 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
These are the stages from Sonic CD, I think that their stylisation and colour is very vibrant and unique. And I
really like the aesthetics of this gameThe music and atmosphere are very chill which would be perfect for an
ambient loop.

Environment 2 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
It is from the Simpsons. I chose it because I really love the Simpsons and a lot of the spaces in The Simpsons
are very reassuring and liminal to me. Also I know a lot about the show so I would have good knowledge on
what to animate within it. The Simpsons artstyle is also not that hard to replicate.

Environment 3 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
This is from anime Samurai Champloo. The backgrounds here are beautiful, serene and full of detail. They
would make for very nice calming ambient backgrounds. However, the amount of detail in them and the
difficulty in animating or drawing the Champloo characters makes this too difficult to consider.
Final choice and reason: The Sonic CD backgrounds are striking and would be the sort of thing I’d want to work
with as I can use spritesheets to animate the characters and construct the backgrounds to my liking instead of
having to draw it all.

Question 3/5
Create a mood board of AT LEAST 3 character styles which you like by selecting several images per setting. Say where
you got them from and why you like them. They MUST be from 2d animations.

Character type 1 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
Naoto Ohshima, Classic Sonic design 1991-1998: I really like this design as it simple but expressive. He has an
air of coolness and cuteness simultaneously.

Character type 2 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
Matt Groening, Simpsons designs. Great and classic designs. Instantly iconic with their exaggerated yet not
overstated proportions and features, simplicity and distinctively yellow skin. I also have experience drawing
the style since my documentary.

Character type 3 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
Yoichi Kotabe, Mario 3 designs. Simple, expressive and cute designs. They would fit well into an animation, and
I am sure that they are easy to learn to draw. I also want to aim for a videogame audience so this would be a
good character design to choose.
Final choice/style and reason: I would like to do a videogame-based ambient loop and I know more about
Sonic than Mario so If I’m going to have a Sonic background obviously, I’ll need to use the Sonic designs.

Question 4/5
Create three mood boards of AT LEAST 3 colour schemes which you might use on your chosen environment/style.
Ideally these would be schemes with a minimum of five colours in each. Say why you like them.

Colour scheme 1 (insert image here)

What you like about this scheme: Sonic CD has a lot of pinks, purples and blues. It's a colour scheme I really
enjoy, always been a fan of deep purples. This colour scheme would work well for Wacky Workbench, Stardust
Speedway and a lot of other Sonic CD time periods.

What you don’t like about it: Not entirely sure if the cyan is necessary. It's a good contrast but I don't think
that's needed for a lot of the stages.
Colour scheme 2 (insert image here)

What you like about this scheme: This palette would work well in Stardust Speedway Past, Quartz Quadrant
and Tidal Tempest. It's a very natural colour scheme which is good for certain stages.

What you don’t like about it: It could do with another standout colour or a blue instead of a yellow would look
nice.

Colour scheme 3 (insert image here)

What you like about this scheme: This would be a really good scheme for Collision Chaos Present. And again
Sonic CD uses a lot of pinks.

What you don’t like about it: It's a bit samey and similar to the first one. It also applies to less stages.

Favourite potential choice for your animation and reason: Considering I want to use 3 different time zones on a
specific stage and my work is going to be heavily based on the place I choose. I shouldn't pick out a specific
colour scheme until I have decided which zone I am using.

Question 5/5
Select AT LEAST 3 post-animation effects which you like. Say where you got them from and why you like them.

Effect 1 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
1. https://youtu.be/qJ_NfxzHs2s?si=bIsHsh5k_nPBK5me
Chimera – Segment of SA2: Reimagined. Using smear frames and adding 2D elements to create a sense of
movement. Could be very useful if I did a Sonic project
2.

3.

Effect 2 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
1. https://youtu.be/dFlDRhvM4L0?si=IyREAP69lpXOozFcC
Chainsaw Man opening uses a variety of post-effects including post-processing the animation, lens flares,
transition effects. All things that are extremely useful for producing high-budget animation.

2.
3.

Effect 3 (research: add URL for each as well as name of artist or work and why you chose it)
This next one is not an effect used in an animation but instead an effect that is used in certain emulators to
replicate a CRT TV. This would be good for a classic Sonic game ambient loop.

Final potential choice for your animation and reason: I will use the CRT effect as it would fit really well with
what I am going for.
