Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION

I. Background of the Study

An electronic device used for two-way radio communication via a cellular network of
base stations known as cell sites is a mobile phone, also known as a mobile cellular telephone
or cell. Mobile phones date back to the late 1940s , when they first appeared. The invention of
a radio for use in taxicabs, police cars, ambulances, and other vehicles that used two-way
radio to communicate with one another or a central office gave rise to the idea of the mobile
phone. The ability to use a mobile phone was already accessible in the 1960s, but there was a
restriction that the user had to remain inside the broadcast range.

We are now in the third generation mobile phone which we can use our phones to do
many things, for example: text messaging, internet and making calls any wherein the world.
Mobile phones have changed the way we live our lives and to many the prospect of a world
without voice calling, text messaging and mobile internet access is an unsetting one.

According to Shreiner (2012) cell phones present new opportunities and challenges
for students. Along with their books and school supplies, many students make their trip to
school with their mobile phone. The presence of cell phone provides a host of options and
challenges for today’s students.

Mobile phones can be a helpful academic tool, or a hurtful academic disruption

depending upon the attitude and use pattern of the student owner.

The purpose of the study is to determine the impact of using mobile phone of
students' learning. This investigation will be carried out in line with this rationale.
