CHAPTER TWO
ATTACHMENT EXPERIENCES
I was able to attend to internal functions at Namilama Secondary School and also to usher in the
invited guests.
Orientation
During the first week, I was introduced to the staff members in the Department. I had a meeting
with other internees in which work was introduced, the students were given rules schedules. I
was placed in the Human Resource department. Orientations were done for a full week so as to
be familiarized with the Department.
Attending meetings.
Since I was used to have many meetings at the project, many issues were discussed ranging
from working environment, welfare, organization strategies and procedures, regulations which
help in conducting the organizations activities.
Requisition forms are mainly used for funding. These are written by the claimant requesting for
funds, he forwards it to the secretary for approval who later on sends it to the accounts officer
to provide the stated amount.
3
Printing and scanning.
Scanning different documents of the organization was aided by a scanner to convert the papers
based information into electronic on the computer. This was a rare assignment because the
organization had few documents which needed to pass through scanners before entering them in
to the computer. More so printing on the other hand was done after scanning if there need.
In addition to that, the nature of supervision gave me a platform to learn more of how to deal
with different activities.
Being the team planner, this helped a lot to learn how to deal with the different people in the
organization. Team works also helped us to perform assigned tasks efficiently and within a short
period as two heads are better than one.
I had a binding relationship with the fellow interns since there were a lot of ideas to be shared.
The relationship at the work place was also identified between the interns and staff both the
internal and college supervisors.
▪ Timely accomplishment of tasks, once the work was done by a group there was an
assurance that the task will be completed at the right time since everyone participates in
a given task.
4
▪ Collective understanding, since activities were done as a group, this gave a platform
to come up with identical solutions for challenges as work was being done.
▪ Idea generation, since two heads are better than one. Team work enhanced the
presentation of more ideas because the students had a different perspective about a
given
assignment.
▪ High level of cooperation, working as a team increased the degree of cooperation
among the interns since there was idea sharing.
1. Management skills
2. Time conscious.
I was time conscious and these enabled me to do work more effectively and efficiently. Keeping
time also enabled me to do other important things apart from the work at the office.
In the field there are many kinds of people and thus I met many people with different characters,
but I had to learn to cope with them especially creating a good relationship with the contractors
and the customers of the company.
My ability to work in a team and with my colleague’s staff members around me was essential in
every type of job I handled. In the work environment this involved a different set of skills and
challenges that I needed to be used to at the university.
5
I gained a lot from dealing with staff members since this gave me an opportunity to be of service
and get experience on customer relations.
My internship allowed me to question and work with people who work in my chosen
department. They gave me a good and personal insight into what the job entails and what has
been developing in the industry.
5. More placement student goes onto achieve higher grades and better degrees.
The additional skills and knowledge i gained during the attachment can often be directly applied
to my studies and applied correctly can lead to better grades. This in turn will help me progress
to the next stage of my career path more effectively.
Tasks to be done elicit a measurable action of performance based on a specific task. A behavior
necessitates a consequence (evaluation). From the evaluation, an act can be praised or
reprimanded. The action taken within the consequence zone is guided by organizational
principles.
6
OBSERVATIONS AND CRITIQUE
Prior to information on the ground that in most organizations interns are welcomed, mine was
different as the staffs were warm and welcoming. It is true that others feel insecure and are
uncomfortable about their jobs but I enjoyed myself in working for the organization.
The atmosphere in my department was very good. The cordial working relationship and the
friendly tone of communication with fellow staff members helped the fun factor to be high
besides the work in the office. We exchanged skills as well as the challenges we faced at work.
Challenges Encountered
During my stay at Namilama Secondary School, I didn’t experience any major problems except
for system breakdowns. Sometimes computer systems just hanged when one is trying to install
software to beat deadlines.
The college training program was rather more theoretical hence when confronted with these
tasks it was quite difficult to explain the expected outcomes. Most concepts were exhaustively
discussed in class but not experimented.
Correctly configuring network devices. The curriculum had only one mass practical session on
networking limiting my knowledge and capabilities in this area.
Server administration. Only Windows 2003 was taught yet the industry uses quite a range of
technologies e.g. Windows 8.1.
Hardware installation. This was a challenge at first especially configuring a hard disk using
jumpers of which I later got to know the jumper technology works to setting up master and slave
drives for boot up.
There is also a high level of bureaucracy when trying to solve a simple problem. This subjects
the staff and students to endless movements from one office to another seeking the officials’
signature, which is cumbersome and time wasting.
7
Areas that I applied my knowledge and skills for the benefit of Namilama Secondary
School
During the entire attachment period I came into contact with very many personalities and all
these I took into account for current and future use. I put my skills to inform the department to:
There is bound to be information loss due to disintegrated processing of data from various
sources. This is made worse by lack of an elaborate system for data flow through the institution.
This will greatly boost the quality of service enjoyed by their customers as they are handled
honorably and professionally.
c) Update website
For the above mentioned reason I hereby intend to update the colleges website in order to make
better improvements and quick access to courses offered at the school. Also for the students to
take part in making suggestions about the institution welfare.

CHAPTER THREE
3.0 SUMMARY
Namilama Secondary School has continued to provide quality, market driven and affordable
professional training since its inception in 2013. Many students have passed through Namilama
Secondary School with very fulfilling positions in various sectors of the economy in Kenya and
beyond.
During my internship period, I experienced and achieved a lot. Working in a real working
environment and interacting with the high-ranking officials was really awesome. The
organization’s workmates gave me full support and taught me what I needed to learn where and
when it was necessary. It is my hope that what I learnt will benefit me after graduating.
3.1 CONCLUSION
Although the Department is still on the growing, it has shown great signs of improving better
day by day to become the leading department in the County. Great impact has been realized in
creation of employment and to some extent diversification of activities. Since the time I have
been in here I have gained a lot. From the time I started my attachment until the end, I did not
encounter any major problems since the supervisors were always around to give assistance. As
part of an academic curriculum attachment helps the student to develop and enhance academic
and professional competencies.
3.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
There should be monthly training and educational programs for attachment students and the
Computerized Secretarial students at the institution, and medical treatment after exposure to
9
accidents such as electric shocks and also about computer repair precautions, student’s safety,
data collection, data backup, care of the website, and appropriate use of the college website.
On the school’s website, there ought to be a student portal and staff portal whereby students can
login and access details on their fee statements and results online rather than going to the school
itself to enquire about their results. In the portal, notices can also be placed in case a staff
meeting is required or a student meeting is to take place.
Also about the college computer laboratory, I recommend that the institution upgrades all of its
computers to avoid day to day failures that sometimes cause the students to wait for a while so
that those machines can be repaired.
I recommend that aprons be worn when handling computers and dust blowing them to prevent
dust from dirtying individual’s attire.
This working experience significantly increases the chances of employment for a student after
graduating. I therefore recommend students to undertake internship before completion of their
studies as this facilitates more knowledge in their field of specialization.
