ITEC 11 Lesson 1.1

1. The document discusses living in the information technology era and provides an introduction to computers, including basic functions, how computers work through input, processing, output and storage, and basic components. 2. It defines information technology as any technology that helps produce, manipulate, store or disseminate information. A computer system is described as an electronic device that accepts data as input, processes and stores it, and produces a result. 3. The key benefits of being computer savvy are described as making better purchasing decisions, fixing common problems or knowing when to get help, upgrading equipment effectively, using the internet efficiently, and protecting yourself against online threats.

INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
A general term that described any
technology that helps to produce,
manipulate, store and/or disseminate
information.
INTRODUCTION TO
COMPUTERS
COMPUTER SYSTEM
An electronic device which consists of
several components that together provide
the capability of executing a stored
program.
It accepts data, processes and stores
these, producing a result.

SYSTEM SOFTWARE
✓ Performs tasks necessary for the
efficient management of the
hardware.
✓ Ithelps the computer perform
essential operating tasks and enable
the application software to run.
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Programs that help solve and meet user
problems and needs directly. They are
designed to perform specific functions,
which make daily activities easier and
facilitate the performance of work
efficiently and effectively.
TYPES OF APPLICATION SOFTWARE
COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE: prepackaged
and is available from software vendors.
SHAREWARE: developed and released as
demonstration versions of the commercial
product.
OPEN SOURCE: released to the public
domain for free and for public use.
INPUT DEVICES

Consists of external devices that

provide information and
instructions to the computer.
OUTPUT DEVICES
Consists of devices that communicate
the result of processing back to the user
by converting electrical signals from the
Arithmetic/Logica Unit into a form
recognizable by a human operator.
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU)
Responsible for the processing and
conversion of data from input to
output.
It is composed of main storage,
registers, buses, Arithmetic Logic Unit
(ALU), and control unit.
SECONDARY STORAGE
Data are stored permanently. There are
two (2) reasons why we need a
secondary storage device.
First: Primary storage can only store a
limited amount of data.
Second: Data store in primary storage
are volatile and temporary.
III. BASIC OPERATIONS OF A
COMPUTER
INPUT OPERATION
Whatever is put in (“input”) to a computer system.

PROCESSING OPERATION
The manipulation a computer does to transform data into
information.

STORAGE INFORMATION
Composed of primary and secondary storage.

OUTPUT OPERATION
Whatever is output from (“put out of”) the computer
system- the results of processing, usually information.

COMMUNICATIONS OPERATION
It extends power to the computer.

Used to display data in
visual form. The images
it displays are where
the user gets
information.
MOUSE
A pointing device that
sends control signals into
the computer. It is used
to move the cursor on
the screen and perform
click actions.
KEYBOARD
Contains set of keys
that are used to input
characters and
control signal into the
computer
AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR
Protects the computer
from changes in the
electricity that may
damage the computer
components. It regulates
the voltage that goes into
the computer.
SYSTEM UNIT
Serves as a container of
the computer’s internal
parts.
