Are you satisfied with your job? In a survey of 1,673 workers by an American non-profit
research group, it was found that 52 per cent of workers in the USA were dissatisfied at work

Power point Inversion and inversion of conditionals

There are two types of inversion.

a. Using the question form of the main verb.

Not only did he turn up late for the exam, but he was also rude to the teacher.

Never have I felt so embarrassed.

b. Changing the normal position of the verb and subject.

Down the hill came the children.

Inversion after negative adverbials.

This only occurs when the adverbial is at the beginning of the clause.

It is normally used in formal situations or for rhetorical purposes.

Never have we been in such a difficult situation.

Time expressions: rarely, seldom, never, etc
These time adverbials are frequently used with present perfect or past perfect or with modals
such as can or could. Sentences like this often imply a comparison.

Rarely had I seen such a dramatic sunset.

Seldom had the team played so badly.

Time expressions: hardly, barely, scarcely, no sooner

These refer to an event which quickly follows another. They are normally used with the past
perfect. However, no sooner can be followed by past simple.

Hardly had the minister entered the lecture theatre when the students started to shout and
scream abuse at him.

Scarcely had I hidden the confidential report when the police entered the office.

No sooner had we set out on the hike than it started to rain torrentially.

After only, only then, only later

Only combines with other time expressions and is usually used with the past simple.

Only after I had left the exam room did I realise I had answered the wrong question.

Only then did I realise that the robbers were still in the house.

Note: when only refers to “a state of being the only one” there is no inversion.

Only Steve was given the sack.

Phrases containing no / not

These include on no account, at no time, on no condition, under no circumstances, not until,

not only, in no way

Note that the inverted verb is the verb limited by the negative adverbial.

Under no circumstances are you to leave the room without handing in your exam.

On no condition are you to speak to another student during the exam.

Little
Little can also have a negative meaning.
Little did I think I’d end up working for such a prestigious organisation.

Inversion

Complete the following transformations so that the second sentence has the same or a
similar meaning to the first.

1. The boss did not know what the office staff had been getting up to while she was away.

7. I had never felt so scared.

Never _____________________________________________________________ so scared.

8. You mustn’t drink alcohol while you are taking these antibiotics.

On no account ___________________________ alcohol while you are taking these antibiotics.

Presentations

1. Form a group of three students.

2. Choose a subject. Each group must choose a different topic.
All presentations have to be on future predictions on how a particular aspect of life or technol-
ogy is likely to develop in the next 5-20 years (i.e. predictions based on present trends, not fan-
tasy).
Possible areas are: life style, health & medical science, personal relationships & family, cities,
telecommunications &/or the media, transportation, politics, or something in your field.

3. Choose and fill in a date on the presentations wiki.

4. Decide how to divide the task of research and preparing material.
The presentation is only 10 minutes long, so each speaker should not plan to talk for more
than 3 minutes.
Material should include Power Points of important facts or points of argument but not
complete texts, and images but not videos.
Whatever area you chose to be responsible for, make sure you do enough background reading
to answer questions from the audience, especially if it’s not your field.

5. Prepare five comprehension questions or true/ false statements to hand out during the
presentation. This will help the audience to focus more.

6. Before the presentation, please copy and paste your answers to the checklist below into the
presentations forum space.

Remember that the presentation will make up 5% of your final grade.
