3-LAMIE’S THEOREM
1-State Lami’s theorem .
Statement – It states that, if three forces acting at a point on a body keep it at rest, then each
force is proportional to the sine of the angle between the other two forces.
As per Lami’s theorem,
𝐹1 𝐹2 𝐹3
= =
𝑠𝑖𝑛α 𝑆𝐼𝑁 β 𝑆𝐼𝑁 γ
where,
F1, F2, F3 = Three concurrent forces
α = Angle made by force F2, F3
β = Angle made by force F1, F3
γ = Angle made by force F1, F2
2-What are the limitations of Lami’s theorem? Or conditions for applying Lami’s theorem.
i. This theorem is applicable only for three forces.
ii. This theorem is applicable when forces are concurrent.
iii. This theorem is applicable only when body is in equilibrium.
iv. This theorem is not applicable for non-concurrent force system.
3-State law of moment .
Statement- when number of coplanar non- concurrent forces are acting on body in equilibrium
then algebraic sum of clockwise moment of the forces equal to the algebraic sum of
anticlockwise moment of the forces.
Σ clockwise moment of the forces = Σ anticlockwise moment of the forces.
4-Define equilibrium.
When the system of forces acting on the body at rest then it is said to be in equilibrium.
In such case resultant is zero (0).
5-State Analytical conditions of equilibrium for concurrent force System.
1) Σ Fx = 0 i. e. Algebraic sum of all the forces along X-axis must be equal to zero.
2) Σ Fy = 0 i. e. Algebraic sum of all the forces along Y-axis must be equal to zero.

6-State Analytical conditions of equilibrium for non-concurrent force System.
1) Σ Fx = 0 i. e. Algebraic sum of all the forces along X-axis must be equal to zero.
2) Σ Fy = 0 i. e. Algebraic sum of all the forces along Y-axis must be equal to zero.
3) Σ M = 0 i. e. Algebraic sum of moment of all the forces about any point must be equal to zero.
7-Define free body
Free Body: In statics, for considering the equilibrium of the bodies under any system of forces,
each body is separated from its surrounding; such body is known as a free body.
8- Define free body diagram.
Free Body Diagram: If all active and reactive forces acting on free body are shown in the
diagram such diagram is known as free body diagram.
9-State graphical condition for equilibrium.
❖ For coplanar concurrent coplanar force system-
First graphical condition of equilibrium for coplanar concurrent forces can be stated as
the vector diagram of forces must be closed polygon.
❖ For coplanar non-concurrent coplanar force system-
Second graphical condition of equilibrium for coplanar non- concurrent forces can be
stated as the funicular polygon must be closed figure.
10-State significance of FBD.
❖ Problems on statics can be easily be solved or simplified by constructing free body
diagram.
❖ Force system acting on two or more bodies in contact can be shown properly by this
diagram such that problem on statics becomes very simple for further solution.
