4.0 REGIONAL GEOLOGY

As per the Geologic Map (GM-208-A) the site is under Sand (Qtc) and Silt

(Qs) and associated fine sediments including caliche-like and gypsiferous

deposits in undrained depression; gravel composed chiefly of limestone and

other rocks of local origin, includes older gravels in some areas.

Page 2
5.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION

After the visual inspection of the site, the subsurface soil investigation was

performed on August 13-24, 2022. Sixteen (16) exploratory borings were

drilled at the location shown on the enclosed site plan (Figure 1, Appendix I).

The boring was drilled by the use of trucks mounted Mobile B-53 drilling rigs

utilizing tricone bit & casing. Borehole number, location and depth was made

according to the project requirements to cover the site and satisfy the

geotechnical needs of the project as can be seen in Figure 1 Appendix I. Both

sampling and field testing were conducted in accordance with the applicable

ASTM specifications.

The log of the borehole is shown in Appendix I, wherein a continuous profile of

each borehole was prepared by an experienced engineering geologist to

present clearly all the subsurface soils encountered.

Soil samples were collected at frequent intervals using a standard 50 mm

(outside diameter) split-spoon sampler driven with a 63.5 kg automatic

hammer with a drop height of 0.76 m in accordance with the Standard

Penetration Test (SPT) procedures (ASTM D 1586-11).

The following table presents the correlation between field tests (SPT) and soil

properties (After Peck et al., 1974).

7.0 GEOTECHNICAL CONDITION

7.1 Subsurface Formation

The subsurface soil field information that have been provided from the sixteen

(16) boring, drilled to the depth of 15.0m, 25.0m. 30.0m and 40.0m below the

boreholes present levels revealed that the subsurface formation mainly consists

of two (02) subsoil formation that are extending from the existing borehole surface

to the total depth investigated. The estimated soil profile is composed of the

following:

1. Sand Layer: From the top, a layer of light brown, very loose to dense, Poorly

Graded Sand extending to 28.50m as shown in the borehole logs. In some

boreholes a mix of sand, gravel, cobbles was encountered at depth between

4.50m to 10.50m as shown in the borehole logs.

2. Elastic Silt: Below the top layers, a layer of a layer of light greenish/creamy,

hard, Elastic Silt was encountered down to the maximum depth of 40.0m.

Page 5
7.2 Groundwater Table

Groundwater table was encountered at the depth of -3.20m to -4.25m from the

borehole surface level at this site at the time of drilling until maximum depths

investigated. It must be noted that fluctuation of ground water level (+0.80m to

1.00m) may be occurred due to irrigation, drainage, rainfall, high and low tide

and other factors. Hence, specifications and construction planning should

recognize the possibilities of variation.

7.3 Project Site Seismicity

According to the Saudi Building Code 2018 (SBC 301-CR-18) figure 22-1 &

22-2, and based on the geotechnical properties of the encountered soils, the

Project Site Seismicity parameters are presented in the following table:

General Important Notes for piles foundations:

1. The final depths of piles will be ascertained based on piles loading tests

which should be carried out before proceeding with the work. The data

mentioned on the above table will be revised accordingly.

Page 10
2. The pile should be reinforced with its full length.

3. The depth of pile on which the pile capacity has been calculated is

starting from the bottom level of the pile cap (-0.60m).

4. The compressive strength of the concrete used for casting piles and pile

caps should not be less than 300Kg/cm2. The cement content of the

concrete should not be less than 400Kg/m3.

5. Water cement ratio for the concrete used for piles and piles caps should

not be more than 0.40. The concrete cover for the reinforcement should

not be less than 75mm.

6. The minimum spacing (centre to centre) between piles should be 2.5 to

3.0 times their diameters.

7. Adequate number of pile load tests should be carried at any location of

single pile to confirm the allowable pile capacity; the test should follow

ASTM specifications D-1143.

8. Cement Type-V should be used for all concrete works such as piles and

pile caps.

9. 50cm of rock fill 1.5” – 3.5” (No. “1” of AASHTO M43) should be applied
and perfectly compacted under piles caps.

Page 11
8.1.b Soil Improvement by Stone Column (Vibro Replacement)

Page 12
Based on our field explorations, soil layer with debris material were

encountered as shown in the boring logs and are presented in Appendix I.

The soil layers with debris material were encountered from surface to

depths varying from 0.00m to 9.00m. Bearing capacity for the proposed

structures can be improved by replacing loose material with stone

columns. Stone columns can be installed to a depth of 12.0m to 15.0m

below existing ground level. This method consists of lowering vibratory

probe into the ground and replacing the loose material with aggregate to

achieve adequate compaction. The spacing of probe points and exact

depth of treatment is depending on the equipment used by Specialist

Contractor. After the improvement, required bearing capacity could be

attained for isolated spread/strip footing and rigid raft foundations

depending upon the spacing and the depth of the stone columns.

Specialist contractor should be consulted for detailed information for the

achievable Safe Bearing Capacity using the employed equipment. At the

investigated locations by installing stone columns, safe bearing capacity

of the existing soil can be improved up to 150-200 KPa. For plan layout

and sectional details with design calculations and sequence of

construction for stone columns, specialist contractors could be consulted.

Note: For safety of the existing structures, outer boundary of the soil

improvement area should be at least 5.0m away from the existing

structure. The replacement material shall consist of hard, durable

Page 13
fragment of stone or gravel. As a general rule, suitable size of material is

1-4 inches.

Quality Assurance for Vibro-Replacement

- The Contractor shall prove by tests that the improved ground will safely

carry the design load.

- The test program and vibro pattern shall be proposed by the contractor

and to be approved by Owner's Representative.

- Quality Control tests, such as Dutch Cone Test or boreholes with

continuous SPT shall be performed by Independent Laboratory.

Contractor's proposal shall contain field trials and Plate / Zone Load Tests

after soil improvement. Load test shall be performed for Quality Control.

Such that, after soil improvement, at least Four (04) Plate Load Tests

(PLT) following ASTM D-1196 and One (01) Zone Load Test (ZLT) using

plate size of minimum 1.5m x 1.5m shall be performed per each tank and

one for every 2000 square meters of the improved area or minimum two

tests per site is recommended. The test shall be performed on a precast

footing at least up to 1.5 times the design load.

8.2 Depth of Foundation -The recommended depth of foundation is below the

existing borehole level.

Page 14
8.3 Allowable Bearing Capacity - The recommended bearing value is the net

allowable pressure, which should be used in the design for total dead and

live loads.

8.4 Modulus of Subgrade Reaction - The recommended values Modulus of

Subgrade Reaction (Ks) is correlated to the recommended net bearing

capacity values using the equation

proposed by (Bowles, 1996):

Ks = FS qa / ΔH (kN/m³)

qa = The Net Allowable Bearing Pressure.

∆H = Settlement, FS= Factory of Safety

8.5 Settlement - By applying the above-mentioned soil pressure, the

estimated total settlement under the recommended foundations should be

less than 2.50cm for isolated footing and 5.00 cm for raft foundation. The

differential settlement will be within tolerable limits.

8.6 Lateral Earth Pressure Parameters

Page 15
For granular soil Backfill behind basement/retaining walls, the following soil

parameters could be used for the design:

Table 6: Lateral Earth Pressure Parameters

Effective friction angle (Ф’) 30°
Total unit weight (γ) 18 kN/m3
Effective unit weight (γ’) 8 kN/m3
At rest lateral earth pressure (Ko) 0.5
Active lateral earth pressure (Ka) 0.33
Passive lateral earth pressure (Kp) 3
Coefficient of friction between soil & concrete 0.45

8.7 Site grading and Slope stability

All areas to receive new structures should be stripped, cleared from all

vegetation, topsoil, debris and rubbish fill material. Temporary excavation

could be performed at 2.0H: 1V inclination (Horizontal: Vertical) or

otherwise shoring system is recommended.

Ordinary equipment can be used for the excavation of the soil while jack

hammer will be used for rock excavation.

8.8 Engineered Fill

The fill to be used to raise the grade around and above footings shall

Page 16
consist of suitable engineered fill such as A-1-a, A-1-b, A-2-4 & A-3

material (confined area) as per AASHTO -145 classifications, and should

be spread in uniform lifts not exceeding 25cm in thickness and compacted

to a minimum standard compaction of 95%.

The structural (engineered) fill used to raise ground level under footing

shall consist of well graded granular soil such as A-1-a or A-1-b as per

AASHTO classification and should be placed in layer not exceeding 25cm

in thickness and compacted to the required 95% compaction of the

maximum dry density according to ASTM D-1557 specification. The

exposed surface of excavation to receive Engineered Fill should be proof-

rolled using heavy compactor. Appendix III presents the Engineered Fill

requirements.

8.9 Type of Cement

According to the chemical analysis which has been conducted on the

subsurface soil it is recommended to use Type I cement with MS in the

foundation and subsurface construction. Cement content should not be

less than 400kg/m3, while the minimum concrete cover for the

reinforcement should not be less than 75mm. with a water/cement ratio not

Page 17
exceeding 0.40. In addition, waterproofing membrane is recommended to

use in the subsurface concrete.

9.0 LIMITATIONS

The recommendations which are given in this report are based on the

assumption that the soil condition does not deviate appreciably from those

disclosed in the borings and laboratory test results. At the time of

construction, if there will be any unanticipated variations in the subsurface

conditions or if the proposed construction will differ from those planned at

this time, as it is described in this report, the SAFCO should be notified to

verify the bottom of excavation so that supplementary recommendations

can be given.

Please note that all the samples recovered from this investigation will be

discarded after 15 days upon the submission of this final report if the client

does not ask formally for the retention of the samples.

Our company, after having been chosen to perform this geotechnical

investigation, shall in case of counter claims be liable only to the extent of

what has been paid for the work done.

Value expressed as percentages by mass of total content of cementitious material.

NOTE # 1: If the concentration of NaCI gives a higher class rating that the concentration of SO3,
then the higher class shall be used and vice versa.

NOTE # 2: The cement contents given in the table relate to 20 mm nominal maximum size
aggregate. In order to maintain the content of the mortar fraction at similar values, the
minimum cement content given above should be increased by 50 kg/m3 for 10mm
nominal size aggregate and may be decreased by 30 kg/m3 for 40 mm nominal size
aggregate.

NOTE # 3: Different aggregate require different water contents to produce concrete of the same
workability and therefore a range of free water/cement ratio is applicable to each
cement content. In order to achieve satisfactory workability at specified maximum
free water/cement ratio, it may be necessary to increase the cement content above
the minimum specified or use water-reducing admixtures.

NOTE # 4: Pulverized fly ash (pfa) should comply with BS 3892 or the appropriate part of ASTM
C 595. Ground granulated blastfurnace slag should comply with BS 0002, or the
appropriate part of ASTM C 595.

NOTE # 5: Minimum depth of cover apply to concrete with 20 mm maximum size aggregate. In
no case should the cover be less than the maximum size of aggregate size. Minimum
cover includes cover to links, etc.

NOTE # 6: Concrete exposed to moisture in class 3, 4 or 5 environment should by subject of a

additional requirement of a maximum water penetration of 30 mm at 28 days age
when tested by the DIN 1048 test method for impermeability.

NOTE # 7: Concrete exposed to wetting & drying by irrigation water should be rated Class 2 as a
minimum requirement.

GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS FOR

ENGINEERED FILL

Soil & Foundation Co. Ltd., C.R. 2051033757 - C.C. No. 78673
GENERAL GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS FOR ENGINEERED FILL

A. GENERAL CONDITION

Definition of Terms

FILL ......... is all soil and soil-rock material placed to raise the grade of the site or to backfill excavation.

ON-SITE MATERIAL ... is that which is obtained from the required excavation on the site.

IMPORT MATERIAL ... is that hauled in from off-site areas.

SELECT MATERIAL ... is a soil material meeting the requirements set for in C (2) below.

ENGINEERED FILL ... is a fill upon which the Soil Engineer has made sufficient tests and
observations to enable him to issue a written statement that in his opinion the fill has been placed and
compacted in accordance with the specifications requirements.

AASHTO SPECIFICATIONS. are the latest of the Standard Specifications of the American
Association of State Highway and Transport Officials.

ASTM SPECIFICATIONS .. are those of the American Society for Testing and Materials.

DEGREE OF COMPACTION... is the ratio, expressed as a percentage, of the dry density of the fill
material as compacted in the field to the maximum dry density of the same material determined by
AASHTO Test Designation T180 or by ASTM D-1557-90 test, "Moisture-Density Relation of Soils using
a 10 lb. Hammer and an 18-in. Drop", or AASHTO Test Designation T-90 or ASTM D-698-90 using a
5.5 lb. hammer and 12 in drop.

Soil Engineering Inspections

The Soil Engineer shall be the contractor or Owner's representative to observe the grading operations
both during preparation of the site and the construction of any engineered fill. He shall make a
sufficient number of field observation and tests to enable him to form an opinion regarding the
adequacy of the site preparation, the acceptability of the fill materials, and the extent to which the
degree of compaction of the fill, as placed, meets the specification requirements. Any fill that does not
meet the specification requirements shall be removed and/or recompacted until the requirements are
satisfied.

Soil Investigation

A Soil Investigation has been performed for this site. A report of this investigation is available to the
Contractor upon request. The Contractor shall familiarize with the soil conditions at the site whether
covered in the report or not, and shall thoroughly understand all recommendations associated with
grading.

Soil & Foundation Co. Ltd., C.R. 2051033757 - C.C. No. 78673
B. SITE PREPARATION

Excavation

All excavation shall be carefully made true to the grades and elevations shown on the plans. The
excavated surfaces shall be kept properly graded to provide good drainage during construction and
prevent pending of water.

Preparation for Filling

All vegetation, organic top-soil and debris shall be stripped from the site. The stripping depth shall be
determined by the supervising Soil Engineer in the field. The stripped material shall either be removed
from the site or stockpiled for re-use later, but none of the stripped material contaminated by organic
matter may be used for engineered fill.

Any soft areas exposed after stripping shall be over-excavated. all visual or unseen channels or
ditches shall be over-excavated to the depth of firm material and to the width of the compacting
equipment.

After being stripped and over-excavated, the upper 15cm below the exposed surfaces shall be
compacted to a moisture content that will permit proper compaction as hereinafter specified for
fill. Before placing the fill, the contractor shall obtain the soil Engineer's approval of the site
preparation in the area to be filled. The requirements of this section may be omitted only when
approved in writing by the soil Engineer.

C. MATERIAL USED FOR FILL

1. General Requirement for Fill Materials

All fill material must be approved by the soil Engineer. The material shall be a soil or soil rock
mixture which is free from organic matter or other deleterious substances. The fill material shall
not contain rock or lumps over 15 cm in greatest dimension, and not more than 15 percent larger
than 6.5 cm. In addition, the maximum size of rock or lumps shall be less than 10 cm in back fill
materials. Excavated on-site materials, if free of organic or other deleterious substances, are
suitable for use in fills, except where select material is specified.

2. Requirements for select fill Material

In addition to the requirement of C.1 above, select material must conform to the following:

Maximum Plasticity Index 12%

3. Engineering Fill Material

Fill material shall be spread in uniform lifts not exceeding thickness that achieves the desired
degree of compaction (generally 20 cm uncompacted thickness is acceptable). Before
compaction begins, the fill shall be brought to the required moisture content by either: (1)
aerating the material if it is too wet; (2) spraying the material with water if it is too dry. Each lift
shall be thoroughly mixed before compaction to ensure a uniform distribution of water content.
Appropriate water content will be determined by ASTM D 1557-90 and/or ASTM D 690-90

E. TREATMENT AFTER COMPLETION OF GRADING

After grading is completed and the Soil Engineer has finished his inspect of the work, no further
excavation shall be done except with the approval of and under the observation of the soil
engineer.

It shall be the responsibility of the Grading contractor to prevent erosion of freshly graded areas
during construction and until such time as permanent drainage and erosion control measures have
been installed.
