Cementitious Grouting Technical Guide

Overview and General Instructions issue 03/Jul.15

Description and Design Criteria

®
Cementitious Cicogrout range is that powder products group which is manufactured from
various cement components to obtain the maximum flowability and strength with the
minimum possible Water/Powder ratio (W/P).
®
The high flowability of Cicogrout products grants the highest EBA percentage (Effective
Bearing Area).
CIC uses the DST mechanism (Dimension Stability Technology), that allows gathering the
two main grout advantages – high compressive strength and high flowability - avoiding the
threats of drying and plastic shrinkages, which represent the most common grouting
complains.

Successful Grouting
To assure successful grouting, be positively sure of four essential points:
I. The right selection of grout from the beginning (the right specification).
II. The right surface preparation.
III. The right application steps.
IV. The full curing.

I. How to choose the right grout?

CIC has produced a wide range of cementitious grouts that covers most of known grouting
application requirements:
1. General Purpose Grouting, which is demanded to grout most of steel structure posts,
precast concrete works and supports of light and medium weight non vibrating
machinery skid installation.
It could be used where about 65 Mpa compressive strength @ 28 days and a range of
®
10-100 mm gap width are required, Use Cicogrout NS or GP.
2. High Strength Grouting, which is sensitively needed to grout bridges bearing works or
extremely heavy non vibrating machinery skid installation, and where over 80 Mpa
compressive strength @ 28 days and a range of 20-100 mm gap width are required. Use
®
Cicogrout HS.
3. Large Volume and High Strength Grouting, which is needed to replace concrete in many
cases of structural repair or comparatively large volume grout pouring like steel gates
fixation, columns jacketing and intensive reinforced structural elements.
In brief; where Micro Concrete is ordered. The average compressive strength @ 28 days
exceeds 80 Mpa and the one go gap width range is 40-350 mm.
®
Use Cicogrout MC.

II. Surface Preparation

Concrete Substrates
All bases or pedestals substrates, and anchor boxes should be sound, clean, and free of
oil, grease and all curing or release agents.
Surface should be roughened by grinding or scabbling, using hand tools or mechanical
means to assure good mechanical bonding key.
All surfaces should be wetted reaching SSD condition (Saturated Surface Dry) prior to
grouting.

Steel Substrates
All under faces of base plates and skids should be clean and rust free. Any oily or greasy
materials should be removed.
Cementitious Grouting
Formwork
Plywood sides should be strongly tight to avoid grout leakage during pouring and the
upper level to be approximately one inch chamfered edged.
Shuttering sides should be 2-4 mm higher than the bottom level of the base plate/skid.
Exposed outer surface of the grout should kept as minimum as possible, but not less than
gap width to assure ideal bearing angle (45°). Generally, it starts from 30 mm.
Good Surface Preparation means cutting halfway to successful grouting .

III. Application
In general, it is quite important to use well trained crews, who are specifically recruited for
grouting. Even for one crew, it is recommended to be divided into separate groups, one for
each activity, like mixing, pouring, surface finishing and curing.

Mixing
Use a clean suitable container (not less than 20 liter volume) for one bag mixing, using
high torque medium speed mixer and suitable pedal for about 90 seconds.
In case of more than one bag mixing, using drum mixer of 150 - 200 liter volume is
recommended but for 2 - 3 minutes. Please ask for CIC technical support to state the right
number of bags for each product first.
Always add grout to clean water (the right quantity of water is variable, depending on the
desired flowability state, and mentioned in each product’s TDS).
o
It is recommended to keep the mixed grout temperature in the range of 10 – 30 C, by using
cold water in hot weather and warm water in cold weather, while storing, mixing and
placing should be shaded all the time.

Placing
Mixed grout should be kept for 5 minutes in its container after mixing, to allow entrapped
air bubbles to come out.
Choose the pouring point that saves traveling distances of grout i.e. the center of the
longest side of a rectangle.
The pouring point is preferable to be at least 150 mm higher than grout level, to enlarge the
grouting pressure; the same action could be done by using pyramidal wooden duct with
the same height for pouring.
It is essential to pour a continuous current of grout to avoid loss of workability during
pouring, that’s why the required quantity of grout should be previously estimated and
prepared in advance. A small spatula or steel rod could be used by hand to help grout
spread underneath the base plat/skid during casting.
NEVER pour grout from opposite sides in a time, otherwise air will be entrapped under the
base plat/skid forming critical voids in the bearing area.
DON’T compact grout by any means even by hand tools, and in case surface smoothing is
required, wait for not less than 20 minutes after pouring to finish the surface by proper
spatula or steel float.

IV. Curing
The highest curing procedures should be applied to keep the hydration water of grout in
place.
That means early curing and multi stage curing together as follows:
x Just after finishing the surface (within 30 minutes after casting), spray any of
®
Cicocure products on the exposed area and then cover with PET sheet.
x After deshuttering, (normally in 24 hrs) all exposed areas should be wetted by
water, then covered with wet cloth and kept wet for minimum 3 days.
This is the best curing method, but in case of lack of water, another curing compound
spray should be applied over all exposed surfaces after deshuttering, and to be re covered
again with PET sheet for minimum 3 days.

Expected Reasons of Cracks

Cracks are known as the most common complaints of grouts in general.
Although CIC has developed cementitious grouts according to the latest known
technologies, cracks may appear in case any of the mentioned precautions is carelessly
neglected such as:
ƒ Bad selection for the grout product from the start (wrong specification).
ƒ More mixing water than specified.
ƒ Bad mixing command (less mixing time, many bags mixing in a time, weak mixer,
manual mixing, bad pedal...etc.).
ƒ Thicker or thinner gap width than that specified.
ƒ Hot weather grouting is out of control.
ƒ Compaction of Grout or prompt surface finishing.
ƒ Lack of curing.
A great care should be taken to avoid any of A/M defects which may cause cracks.

Cleaning and Disposal

Like all cementitious materials, clean all equipments and tools with water immediately after
use. Hardened material can only be removed mechanically or by hand tools.

Precautions
Health and Safety
®
Cicogrout products are non-hazardous. However, they should not be swallowed or
allowed to come into contact with skin or eyes. Suitable protective goggles should be
worn. Splashes on the skin should be removed with water. In case of contact with eyes,
rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. If swallowed, seek medical
attention immediately. Do not induce vomiting.
