Q3 - Science8 - Week 8 LAS 2

The document provides instructions for an activity to compare the reactivity of different metals by placing pieces of iron, copper, and aluminum in vinegar and observing any reactions over 5 hours, with the goal of determining which metals are most reactive by experiencing a change in color, shape, or other observable reactions when exposed to the acid in vinegar. Students are provided materials needed, step-by-step procedures to set up trials for each metal, and a table to record observations of any physical changes to the metals.

Lesson : Quarter 3 Week 8 LAS 2
Activity Title : Metals how reactive are you?
Learning Target : Compare the relative reactivity of metals in acid solution
Reference(s) : Science 8- Learners Module page 214-215 (MELCS S8MT-IIIi-j-12)
LAS Writer : Christian Elaine P. Nabor

Metals vary in reactivity. The most reactive metals will react even with cold water while the
least will not even react with acid. Reactivity is the tendency of a substance to undergo chemical
reaction, either by itself or with other materials, and to release energy. The reactivity of metals can
cause deterioration of materials. Corrosion is the gradual wearing of metal due to interaction with
other substances specially with acid. Iron for example corrodes when exposed to commercial acetic
acid or vinegar for a long period of time.
Activity: Metals How reactive are you?
Materials: a piece of copper wire (4cm long)
strip of aluminum(4x1cm) NOTE: Don’t use glossy aluminum
iron nail (1 inch long)
1 bottle vinegar
3 clean glass or bottles of the same size
Sand paper or steel wool,
1 tablespoon

Procedure:

1. Get 3 clean glass containers

2. Pour 5 tablespoon of vinegar into the container
3. Prepare iron nail, copper wire, strips of aluminum and zinc metals. Clean these metals
by rubbing them with sand paper or steel wool.
4. Place the iron nail in one container with vinegar leave it for 5 hours.
5. Repeat procedure numbers 2 to 4 using the remaining metals.
6. Place a white sheet of paper behind the bottle. This will make it easier to observe any
reaction to happen.
7. Record all observation by completing the table below.

Table 1
Observable Reactions with Vinegar
Metal Change in Change in No

Guided Questions:
1. Which among the metals reacts on vinegar?_____________________________
2. Which the sample did not react? _____________________________________
3. Among the metals that reacts on vinegar which among them change it physical appearance?
