Before joining the Midjourney Discord server, you must have a verified Discord
login.

5
2: Find a Newbies Channel

On the Midjourney Official Server

Select any newbies-# channel visible in the left sidebar.

On Other Servers
You can generate images with the Midjourney Bot on any server that has invited the
Bot. Look for instructions on your server on where to use the Bot.

3: Use the /imagine Command

6
About Discord Commands
Interact with the Midjourney Bot on Discord using a Command. Commands are used
to create images, change default settings, monitor user info, and perform other
helpful tasks.

The /imagine command generates a unique image from a short text description
(known as a Prompt).

Using /imagine
Type /imagine prompt: or select the /imaginecommand from the slash commands
pop-up.

Type a description of the image you want to create in the `prompt` field.

Click return to send your message.

The Midjourney Bot will generate a pop-up asking you to accept the Terms of
Service. You must agree to the Terms of Service before any image will be
generated.

Respect the Community Guidelines. Community guidelines apply wherever the

Midjourney Bot is used.

If you don't see a pop-up when typing the /imaginecommand, try logging out,
updating the Discord app, and logging back in.

4: Processes the Job

The Midjourney Bot takes about a minute to generate four options.

7
Generating an image activates the free Midjourney trial.Trial users can make
roughly 25 Jobs before needing to subscribe.

A Job is any action that uses the Midjourney Bot. Jobs include using
the /imagine command to create a grid of images, upscaling images, or creating
image variations, all use your free trial time.

Use the /info command to check your Fast Time Remaining to see your remaining
Trial time.

5: Upscale or Create Variations

After the initial image grid has finished generating, two rows of buttons appear:

8
U1 U2 U3 U4

U buttons upscale an image generating a larger version of the selected image and
adding more details.

V1 V2 V3 V4
V buttons create slight variations of the selected grid image. Creating a variation
generates a new image grid similar to the chosen image's overall style and
composition.

The (re-roll) reruns a Job. In this case it would rerun the original prompt
producing a new grid of images.
9
6: Rate Images

After using upscaling an image a new set of options will appear:

Make Variations Light Upscale Redo Beta Upscale Redo ↗️Web

10
Make Variations: creates a variation of the upscaled image and generates a new
grid of four options.

Beta/Light Upscale Redo: redo the upscale using a different upscaler model.
Web: Open the image in your gallery on Midjourney.com

Click a smiley button to rate any upscaled image on the Midjourney website or in
Discord. Each day, the top 1000 image raters receive an hour of free, Fast Mode

1. PARAMETERS

- Aspect Ratios
- Chaos
- Image Weight
- No
- Quality
- Seed
- Stop
- Stylize
- Tile
- Describe

Here are some basic info on how to use parameters in Midjourney v5 to generate
images with specific characteristics:

Aspect Ratios:

The "--aspect" or "--ar" parameter allows you to change the aspect ratio of the
generated image. You can use an aspect ratio of any size with v5, but keep in mind
that images greater than 2:1 may produce unpredictable results. For example, if you
want a YouTube thumbnail, use "--ar 16:9".

Chaos:

The "--chaos" or "--c" parameter influences how varied the initial image grids are.
High chaos values will produce more unusual and unexpected results, while lower
chaos values have more reliable, repeatable results. You can input chaos values
between 0-100 with "--chaos 0" being the default setting.

Image Weight:

Using image weight "--iw" is only useful when using image and text prompts at the
same time. If you want your image to have more influence on the final generation,
increase your weight. "--iw 0.5" is the default weight for v5, but you could increase it
up to "--iw 2". For example, "[image link] vibrant landscape --iw 0.5" = low image
influence, "[image link] vibrant landscape --iw 2" = high image influence.

No:

Use "--no" to remove certain details/imperfections from your generations. For

example, "--no text" would try to remove text from the image [although this doesn't
always work].

12
Quality:

The "--quality" or "--q" parameter changes how much time is spent generating an
image. Higher quality settings take longer to process and produce more details.
However, the quality setting does not impact resolution. The default quality is 1
[base quality], but you can change it to .25 [quarter quality] or .5 [half quality].

Seed:

Seed numbers are generated randomly for each image but can be specified with the
"--seed" or "--sameseed" parameter. You can find an image you'd like to use on the
Midjourney website and copy its' seed code. Then, when you enter your prompt, you
would use the seed code like this, "--seed [input copied seed number]".

Stop:

Use "--stop" to finish a job partway through the process. Stopping a job at an earlier
percentage can create blurrier, less detailed results. For example, "--stop 50" will
halt the generation at 50% completion.

Stylize:

The "--stylize" or "--s" parameter influences how strong Midjourney training is

applied. Low stylization values produce images closer to the prompt, while higher
stylization creates artsy images less connected to the prompt. The default for v5 is "-
-s 100", but you can change it to anything between the range of 0-1000.

Tile:

The "--tile" parameter generates images that can be used as repeating tiles to
create seamless patterns for fabrics, wallpapers, and textures. For example, "koi fish
pond --tile".

Describe:
It’s an image-to-text generator. So you input a photo, and then the software
translates that into a series of four different prompts, which you can then edit to your
liking and then generate more images from them.

The parameters are constantly shifting, but this guide should help you use
parameters to generate images with the characteristics you desire.

13
2. PUNCTUATION

- Functional Punctuation in Midjourney

- Non-functional Punctuation in Midjourney
- Recommended Punctuation for Prompts
- Troubleshooting with Punctuation

Midjourney v5 Punctuation Tips provide recommendations for using punctuation in

prompts to generate ideas with the language model. The following information can
help troubleshoot and resolve issues related to using punctuation in prompts.

- Punctuation Tips for Midjourney v5

The best recommendation for using punctuation in Midjourney is to follow the basic
punctuation rules learned in school. However, Midjourney only understands three
types of punctuation: Double-Hyphens, Double-Colons, and Spaces. Double-
Hyphen delimits parameters, Double-Colon delimits integers (positive and negative)
for weights, and Spaces separate tokens.

- Functional Punctuation in Midjourney

Punctuation outside of the three functional types mentioned above, such as [ ], { }, /

/, ; ;, or ( ), are considered "noise" and not functional in Midjourney. They may,
however, have good correlations in the data set and can be used in prompts for
artistic purposes.

14
- Non-functional Punctuation in Midjourney

Midjourney is not programmed to recognize commas, hyphens, or brackets, but they

can still be used in prompts as they help people understand their token grouping.
Ultimately, any punctuation outside of Double-Hyphens, Double-Colons, and Spaces
does not matter in Midjourney.

- Recommended Punctuation for Prompts

Using proper punctuation in prompts is recommended to help generate more

accurate and relevant ideas. While Midjourney does not recognize punctuation such
as commas, humans do, and using commas in prompts can help with crafting and
understanding the prompt better.

- Troubleshooting with Punctuation

In some cases, using hyphenation in prompts can increase the relationship between
tokens and help troubleshoot issues. However, Midjourney does not recognize
hyphens, and they are only useful for humans to create better prompts.

Ultimately, the punctuation used in prompts is up to the prompter to decide what

structure works best to generate the desired idea. While Midjourney only recognizes
three types of punctuation, using proper punctuation can help with generating
accurate and relevant ideas.

15
3. GENERATING NON-PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES

- Art movement
- Media type
- Media title
- Artist name
- Technique
- Time period
- Geographic location

Midjourney v5 is a tool that can be used to generate various types of images.

However, to generate something other than a photographic image, you will need to
reference art movements, artistic techniques, genres, media types, games titles,
directors, artist names, influences, time periods, etc.

Here are some tips to help you create a specific aesthetic in your Midjourney v5
generated images:

16
- Art movement

Identifying the art movement in the prompt will introduce its style and techniques.
Examples of art movements include "Impressionism", "Surrealism", or "Pop Art".

- Media type

Identifying the medium of an image will determine its aesthetic. Examples of media
types include photography, illustration, comic, concept art, storyboard, sculpture,
etc.

- Media title

Identifying a media influence will influence its look. Examples include "from Spirited
Away" or "from The Wizard of Oz" or "from Sid Meier's Civilization" or "from the
video game Joust".

- Artist name

Referencing the name or the work of a specific artist will roughly invoke their unique
style. Examples of artists include "Vincent Van Gogh", "Frida Kahlo", or "Banksy".

- Technique

Referencing techniques will add that style to the image. Examples of techniques
include "impasto", "pencil sketch", "watercolor", or "digital art".

- Time period

Identifying the historical context of an image will invoke its aesthetic. Examples of
time periods include "Renaissance", "Baroque", or "Modernist" periods.

- Geographic location

Referencing regions and countries will influence style. Examples of geographic

locations include "Japanese Ukiyo-e prints", "African tribal art", or "American
Abstract Expressionism".

It is important to note that photography requires the least memory and is the system
default. Therefore, it is what shows up if the artist does not specify any other styling.

17
4. CAMERA CONTROL

- Camera Far Away

- Camera Medium Distance
- Camera Close Up

In v5, changing the camera zoom and/or angle of the generated image can add
more depth and visual interest. Here are some tips to control the camera
perspective in your prompt.

- Camera Far Away

Use the following phrases to create a sense of distance between the camera and
the subject:

"Wide-Angle Shot" or "Wide-Angle"

"Ultra-Wide Angle" or "Ultra Wide-Angle"
"Far-Shot" or "Far-Angle"
"Aerial View" or "Satellite View" or "Drone Footage"

18
- Camera Medium Distance

Use the following phrases to create a sense of medium distance between the
camera and the subject:

"Medium-Shot" or "Medium-Shot Angle"

"Top-Down Shot" or "Top-Down Angle"
"Ground-Shot" or "Ground-Shot Angle" or "Ground Angle"
"Low-Angle Shot" or "Low Angle"
"High-Angle Shot" or "High Angle"
"Full-Shot" or "Full-Body Shot" or "Full-Length Shot"
"Dutch-Angle" or "Dutch Tilt" or "Canted Angle"

- Camera Close Up

Use the following phrases to create a sense of closeness between the camera and
the subject:

"Eye-Level Shot"
"Close-Up"
"Glamour Shot" or "Glamour Portrait"
"Macro-Shot" or "Macrophotography"

To make sure these phrases have a more significant effect, try placing them at the
beginning or end of the prompt.

19
5. LENSES & FILTERS

1) Camera Lenses
- 15mm Lens
- 35mm Lens
- 85mm Lens
- 100mm Lens
- 200mm Lens

2) Lens Filters
- Color-Gel Filter
- Diffusion-Filter
- Polarization-Filter or Polarizer Lens
- Dichroic-Filter
- Neutral-Density-Filter or ND-Filter
- Infrared-Filter or Infrared-Cut-Off-Filter
- Graduated-Neutral-Density-Filter or GND-Filter
- Ultraviolet-Filter or UV-Filter

3) Space Filters
- Astronomical-Filter
- Oxygen-III Filter
- Hydrogen-Alpha Filter
- Light-Pollution-Reduction-Filter
- Broadband Nebula Filter

20
The Midjourney v5 Camera Lenses & Lens Filters are designed to help change or
enhance the quality of generated images. By adding certain phrases to your prompt,
you can modify the type of lens or filter used to capture the image.

1) Camera Lenses

There are five different camera lenses available to choose from, each with their own
unique features and benefits:

- 15mm Lens: The 15mm lens is an ultra-wide lens that captures a wide field of
view. It is perfect for landscape or architecture photography.

- 35mm Lens: The 35mm lens is a standard lens with a natural perspective similar to
human vision. It is ideal for street-shots or general use.

- 85mm Lens: The 85mm lens is a medium telephoto lens with a narrow field of view
that creates beautiful bokeh and isolates the subject from the background. It is great
for portrait and low-light settings.

- 100mm Lens: The 100mm lens is a medium telephoto lens that provides a longer
working distance for macro photography. It is perfect for capturing detailed close-
ups of small subjects.

- 200mm Lens: The 200mm lens is a telephoto lens that provides a narrow field of
view and magnifies distant subjects. It is great for sports, wildlife, or events where
the subject is far away.

2) Lens Filters

There are eight different types of lens filters available to choose from, each with their
own unique effect on the image:

- Color-Gel Filter: The color-gel filter modifies the color temperature or creates a
specific color effect. For example, a blue color-gel filter can cool down a warm light
generation or a red color-gel filter can warm up a cool light generation.

- Diffusion-Filter: The diffusion-filter softens the image and reduces contrast to

create a dreamy or romantic effect. For example, a soft focus filter is ideal for
portraits, while a diffusion filter is great for nature shots.

- Polarization-Filter or Polarizer Lens: The polarization-filter or polarizer lens reduces

glare, reflections, and enhances color saturation by controlling the direction of light
waves. For example, a circular polarizer filter is great for landscapes, while a linear
polarizer filter is useful for removing reflections from glass surfaces.

21
- Dichroic-Filter: The dichroic-filter separates light into different wavelengths to
create a color separation effect. For example: "Prism filter" for creating rainbow
effects or "star filter" for creating sparkling lights.

- Neutral-Density-Filter or ND-Filter - Reduces the amount of light entering the lens

without affecting color balance. Example: Capturing flowing water or creating motion
blur in bright daylight.

- Infrared-Filter or Infrared-Cut-Off-Filter - Blocks visible light and allows infrared

light to pass through to create a surreal or eerie effect. Example: "Infrared filter" for
landscapes or "night vision filter" for security cameras.

- Graduated-Neutral-Density-Filter or GND-Filter - Reduces the exposure of a

specific area of the image, usually the sky, to balance it with the rest of the image.
Example: Balancing the exposure between a bright sky and a darker foreground in
landscape shots.

- Ultraviolet-Filter or UV-Filter - Blocks ultraviolet light and protects the lens from
dust, scratches, and fingerprints. Example: UV filter for protecting the lens in outdoor
photography or "Haze filter" for reducing atmospheric haze in landscape
generations.

3) Space filters

When it comes to astrophotography, having the right equipment can make all the
difference in capturing stunning images of celestial objects. In addition to camera
lenses and lens filters, astronomers also use astronomical filters to enhance the
colors and details of stars, planets, and nebulae.

- Astronomical Filters: The term "astronomical filter" refers to a category of filters

used in astrophotography to enhance certain features of celestial objects. These
filters are designed to selectively transmit certain wavelengths of light while blocking
others, helping to reveal details that may not be visible to the naked eye.

- Oxygen-III Filter: The Oxygen-III filter is designed to capture the blue-green

emission nebula in astrophotography. This filter selectively transmits the
wavelengths of light emitted by ionized oxygen atoms, helping to bring out the
details of these beautiful nebulae.

- Hydrogen-Alpha Filter: The Hydrogen-Alpha filter is used to isolate the red

emission line of hydrogen atoms emitted by nebulae and regions of ionized
hydrogen gas. By blocking other wavelengths of light, this filter helps to reveal the
intricate details of these regions in stunning detail.

- Light-Pollution-Reduction Filter: In light-polluted areas, it can be challenging to

capture clear images of the night sky due to the presence of artificial light. The Light-

22
Pollution-Reduction filter is designed to block specific wavelengths of light
associated with light pollution, helping to reveal the beauty of the night sky.

- Broadband Nebula Filter: The Broadband Nebula Filter is designed to enhance the
contrast of emission nebulae by blocking unwanted light and enhancing the
transmission of specific wavelengths of light associated with nebular emissions. This
filter can help capture stunning images of these celestial objects in greater detail.

23
6. REFERENCE IMAGE

- Adding images to a prompt

- Increasing the influence of reference images

- Recommendations for using reference images

- Limitations of reference images

The Midjourney v5 allows users to use images as part of a prompt to influence a

job's composition, style, and colors. Users can experiment with combining images
with different styles for the most exciting results.

Adding images to a prompt

To add images to a prompt, users need to type or paste the web address where the
image is stored online. The address must end in an extension like .png, .gif, or .jpg.
After adding image addresses, users can add any additional text and parameters to
complete the prompt. For example: /imagine [image URL] [your prompt]. Users can
upload their images to Discord, right-click, and copy the image link OR direct
message the image to the Midjourney Bot for increased privacy.
24
Increasing the influence of reference images

If users don't want Midjourney to blend their reference image(s) using its own rules,
then they can write a prompt for the output they want to see. In --v 5, users can
increase the influence of their reference image using "--iw N" where N is a value
between 0.5 and 2. The default is 1.0, so if users want their image reference to be
less influential, they can try --iw 0.5 and if they want it to be very influential, they can
try --iw 2.
Note that the output won't look exactly like the input. Reference image(s) are only
influences, so users will not be able to recreate the exact likeness of themselves or
their loved ones.

Recommendations for using reference images

Users can play with the value of --iw between 0.5 and 2 to modify the influence of
the reference images. All images will have the weight specified here, and users can't
give them different values. Users can also play with the value of --stylize [--s]
between 0 and 1000 to turn down (or up) the influence of Midjourney's house style.
The lower value is likely to create more likeness to the reference. The URL of the
reference image(s) MUST end in an image filename extension such as png, jpg, gif.
Users should strive to use the same aspect ratio for inputs as they'd like as output.
Otherwise, they may run into issues with borders. Reference images should be
simple with clear subjects and uncomplicated backgrounds. One reference image
will not work without a text prompt, but multiple reference images will work without a
text prompt. Users can use multiple reference images of the subject to increase the
accuracy of the generation. Image refs work best if they already represent roughly
what users want to see in the final image. A running figure will be easier to render as
running than a standing one, and the pose will carry over.

Limitations of reference images

Midjourney will always create a brand new image, never a copy, so users can't
recreate the source image. Users will only get rough likenesses of the people in the
pictures. Midjourney will NOT invent/add/create all by itself. Users must prompt for
it. A reference image that does not include arms will continue to not have arms
unless the prompt mentions arms, i.e., sleeves, biceps, or bracelets.

25
7. THEMES

- Realism & Abstraction

- Retro & Modern
- Science Fiction

The default theme in version 5 of Midjourney is "realistic photography." However, if

10. Nijijourney v5 Tips

The term "niji" can refer to either "rainbow" or "2D" in Japanese.

The newly developed niji model has been finely tuned to generate anime and
illustration styles with a greater understanding of the anime universe. It excels in
producing dynamic action shots and character-focused compositions.

To switch between models, add or change the following parameters in your prompt
or settings:
--niji: Version 4 Midjourney model trained on an anime/manga dataset with a distinct
style for its outputs.
--niji 5: Latest version 5 model.

Niji may interpret English words differently and understand some Japanese, Korean,
Chinese, and other Asian languages through behind-the-scenes Google Translate.
Due to its dataset, it may also have a different set of media references and artists.
Use style words that invoke anime/manga if you want to see anime/manga results.

Here are some useful resources:

https://cdn.kaetemi.be/dl/mj/niji_styles_artist.html
To create your original character in niji・journey/Midjourney:
Step 1: Construct your character by providing a character id image and a simple text
description. Test how well the description performs by putting it back through niji.

prompt: a cute girl with pink hair and knight armor sailor outfit twintails

In niji, a character identification consists of 2 parts.

• a character id image
• a text description

For best results, keep the description simple. The description we picked here is “girl
pink hair twintails knight armor.” Notice that it’s shorter than the prompt that
originally generated the image.

We can test how well the description performs by putting it back through niji, with the
following command.

/imagine https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/some_picture_here girl pink hair

twintails

Where the red is the url of the picture of the character, the blue is the description of
the character.

35
The easiest way to get a url of a character is to post the image to a channel in
discord. click through to expand the image into the web browser, and then copy the
url from the address bar.

prompt: [character id image] girl pink hair twintails knight armor

prompt: [character id image] girl pink hair twintails knight armor

Notice that we don’t have to specify the curly hair, the pink ribbon, or the blue eyes:
niji is reading that from the image and keeping it consistent through many
generations.

Step 2: Pose your character by adding a pose to the prompt consisting of the
character id image, description, and pose.

/imagine https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/some_picture_here girl pink hair

twintails knight armor eating a hamburger

The yellow that we have added to the above prompt is the pose.

prompt: [character id image] girl pink hair twintails knight armor eating a hamburger

prompt: [character id image] girl pink hair twintails knight armor sleepy holding teddy
bear

Step 3: Put your character in a background by providing an id image and a

description for the background. Use multiple image links when necessary. Keep the
prompt simple and let the id images do the talking.
