Application Software
Application software is a type of computer program that performs a specific personal,
educational, and business function. Each program is designed to assist the user with a
particular process, which may be related to productivity, creativity, and/or communication.

Functions of Application Software

Application software programs are created to facilitate a variety of functions, including
but not limited to:
1. managing information
2. manipulating data
3. constructing visuals
4. coordinating resources
5. calculating figures
The categories of application software you are required to use depends on your needs, some
of which are detailed below:
1. Presentation software - enables you to put forth your thoughts and ideas with ease and
with good clarity by using visual information. It lets you display the information in the
form of slides.
2. Web browser - uses to browse the Internet enabling you to locate and retrieve data
across the web. The most popular ones are Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.
3. Multimedia software - creates or record images, and create audio or video files. This
software is extensively used in animation, graphics, image, and video editing. Popular
examples are the VLC media player and Windows media player.
4. Education and reference software – designs to facilitate the learning of a particular
subject. Some of these are JumpStart titles, MindPlay, and Kid Pix.
5. Graphics software - allows you to edit or make changes in visual data or images. It
comprises illustration and picture editor software. Adobe Photoshop and PaintShop
Pro are a few examples of graphics software.
6. Spreadsheet software - performs calculations. In this software, data is stored in a table
format. It allows users to provide formulas and functions to perform calculations.
Microsoft Excel is one good example of spreadsheet software.

 7. Database software - creates and manages a database. Also known as a DBMS
(Database Management System), it helps you organize your data. Oracle, MySQL,
Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and IBM Db2 are some popular
databases.
8. Word processing software - formats and manipulates text, thus, creating memos,
letters, faxes, and documents. Word processing software is also used to format and
beautify the text. Along with Word Art features, the font option lets you change font
color, effect, and style as per your choice. Grammar and spell-check options are also
available to check for errors.
9. Simulation software – allows using in the fields of engineering, education, testing, and
video games. It is used where work on the actual system is unacceptable, inaccessible,
or maybe dangerous. The best examples of the simulation are in the field of robotics,
flight systems, and weather forecast, etc.
10. Freeware - as the very name indicates, it is available free of cost. You can download
it from the Internet and use it without any fee. However, this software does not allow
you to modify it or charge a fee for distributing it. Adobe Reader and Skype are good
examples of this software.
Software updates
Software updates are a way for software developers to fine-tune a product to make it
the best it can be. They offer small, frequent improvements rather than major changes. Unlike
a software upgrade, updates need the existing software program you're using to work.
Updates sometimes run automatically in the background.
Software updates are important to your digital safety and cyber security. The sooner
you update, the sooner you’ll feel confident your device is more secure — until the next update
reminder.

Reasons why it is important to update software regularly:

1. Software updates do a lot of things - Software updates offer plenty of benefits. It’s all
about revisions. These might include repairing security holes that have been
discovered and fixing or removing computer bugs. Updates can add new features to
your devices and remove out-dated ones.
2. Updates help patch security flaws - Software updates often include software patches.
They cover the security holes to keep hackers out.
3. Software updates help protect your data - Updating your software and operating
systems helps keep hackers out.
4. You deserve the latest and greatest - Updates not only patch security holes, they can
also add new features and improve existing ones. In that way, software updates really
are all about you. Your software program may get a new shot of stability — no more
crashing. Or an update might boost program performance — more speed.
Virtualization Software
Virtualization is the process of creating a software-based, or virtual, representation of
something, such as virtual applications, servers, storage and networks. It is the single most
effective way to reduce IT expenses while boosting efficiency and agility for all size
businesses. The most important function of virtualization is the capability of running multiple
operating systems and applications on a single computer or server.

What does virtualization software do?
