Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 6 Module on solving routine and non-routine problems

involving different types of numerical expressions and equations such as 7+ 9 =___
+ 6.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Vico Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Module on solving routine and non-routine

problems involving different types of numerical expressions and equations
such as 7+ 9 =___ + 6.
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

RECAP

Directions: Write an algebraic expression for each of the following.

A. Ann had PhPx at first. After she received PhP510 from her grandmother,

parts. What is the length of each part?
LESSON
Think and Understand
1. Leonille loves fruits. He bought bananas which is 3 times the number of
mangoes. If there are 20 fruits in all, how many of each kind of fruits did he
buy?
Steps in solving problems with unknown numerical value.
 Define the unknown and represent it by a variable.
 Write an equation using the variable.
 Solve the equation
 Check the answer using the equation and if two sides of the equation
are equal then the answer is correct.
Solution:
Let N = number of mangoes
3N = number of bananas
Since there are 20 fruits in all, then N + 3N = 20.
Solving the equation yields,
N + 3N = 20
4N = 20 Add: N + 3N = 4N
4𝑁 20
= Divide both sides by 4
4 4
N = 5
Check the result:
Number of mangoes = 5
Since N is equal to 5, substitute 5 to N
5 + 3(5) = 20
5 + 15 = 20
Therefore, He bought 5 mangoes and 15 bananas.
2. There are 60 pupils in the library. Boys are 14 more than the girls. How
many girls are there?
Solution:
Let N = Number of girls
N + 14 = number of boys
Total number of pupils = N + N + 14
Solving the equation yields,
N + N + 14 = 60 Add: N + N = 2N
2N + 14 + (-14) = 60 + (-14) Add the additive inverse of 14 to both
sides of the equation
2N = 46
2𝑁 46
= Divide both sides by 2
2 2
N = 23
Check the result:
Number of girls = 23
Number of boys = 23 + 14 = 37
Total number of girls and boys = 23 + 37 = 60
Therefore, there are 23 girls in the library.
3. The sum of four consecutive numbers is 130. What is the third number if
the numbers are arranged in ascending order?
Solution:
Consecutive – following one after the other in order
Let: x be the first number
x + 1 be the second number
x + 2 be the third number
x + 3 be the fourth number.
Since the sum of the numbers is 130, then
x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) + (x + 3) = 130
4x + 6 = 130 Add: x + x + x + x = 4x and 1+2+3 = 6
4x + 6 + (- 6) = 130 + (- 6) Add the additive inverse of 6 to both sides of
the equations
4x = 124
4𝑥 124
= Then divide both sides by 4
4 4
X = 31 First number
Hence x is equal to 31 substitutes 31 to find the other 3 expressions.
x+ 1 = 31 + 1 = 32 Second Number
x + 2 = 31 + 2 = 33 Third Number
x + 3 = 31 + 3 = 34 Fourth Number
Therefore, 33 is the third number
