STATISTICS FOR BUSINESS

ASSIGNMENT
Release Date: 9AM Wednesday 29/11/2023
Due Date: 2PM Friday 15/12/2023.

Instructions:
Please read and follow these instructions closely.

• This is a group assignment. You are not allowed to share your work with people
outside your group.

• Each group (5 maximum) will submit a report which contains all the solutions,
calculations, diagrams, analysis. The first page of the report should be the cover
page which includes the names and details of all group members.

• The report must be typed-written. A hard copy and a pdf file are required.

• You should pay attention to the presentation of the report. In particular, you need
to exercise judgement on what to include in the report. Inclusion of unnecessary
and irrelevant materials will be penalized accordingly.

• Please report to the lecturer if there are group members who are not doing their
fair share of work. Members of the same group do not necessarily get the same
marks.

• Deadline should be strictly adhered to. Late submissions will be penalized at 10%
per day.

• This assignment consists of two sections for a maximum of 40 points.

1
1 Problem Solving [15]

Problem 1 [5]
The random variable H has the distribution N (µ, σ 2 ). The mean of a sample of 12
observations of H is denoted by H̄. It is given that

P H̄ < 41 = 0.8068 & P H̄ > 38 = 0.9584.
a) Find the values of µ and σ.
b) Determine the smallest sample size such that the margin of error of the 90%
confidence interval for µ is 2.

Problem 2 [5]
Peter has a collection of 20 books (14 fiction and 6 non-fiction). He selects randomly 4
books to bring with him for the winter vacation. Let X be the number of fiction books
selected.
a) Calculate and plot the graph of the probability function of X.
b) Calculate the mean and variance of X.
Peter selected 3 fiction and 1 non-fiction books for this winter vacation. For the
summer vacation Peter wants to select among his remaining books exactly 2 non-fiction
books. Peter randomly picks up his books one by one until he has 2 non-fiction books.
Let Y be the number of books he needs to pick up.
c) Calculate and plot the graph of the probability function of Y .
d) Calculate the mean and variance of Y .

Problem 3 [5]
A random variable X has a distribution with mean µ and variance σ 2 .
a) A random sample of size 10 is taken. The sample mean and standard deviation
are
X̄ = 59.0656, s = 2.0013.
Find the 90% confidence intervals for µ and σ.
b) We are given that σ = 2. We want to test the null hypothesis that µ = 60
against the alternative hypothesis that µ > 60 at the 5% significance level.
i) Find the critical region of the above test.
ii) Suppose we take a random sample of size 10. Given that the proba-
bility that we make a Type II error is 0.20, find the value of µ.

2 Data Analysis [25]
You are given the data of 3733 vehicles in the Excel file that accompanied this assign-
ment. Perform the following tasks. Note that you are required to use appropriate
diagrams and summary statistics to support your answers.

1) Provide descriptions for the variables Manufacturer, Propulsion Type.

2) Provide descriptions for the variables Engine Size, Mass, and CO2 Emission.

3) Investigate the relationship between Mass and Engine Size. You should use an ap-
propriate diagram and also supply the 95% confidence interval for an appropriate
statistic to support your answer.

4) Test at 1% significance level whether the variance of the CO2 emission level in
year 2002 and year 2016 are the same.

5) Test at 1% significance level whether there is a significant decrease in the mean

CO2 emission level from year 2002 to 2016. You need to justify the choice of test
based on the result of 4).

6) Investigate at 1% significance level whether there is a significant difference in

CO2 emission among different manufacturers. You should analyze cars registered
in 2002 and 2016 separately.

7) Investigate at 1% significance level whether there is a significant difference in CO2

emission among different propulsion types. You should analyze cars registered in
2002 and 2016 separately.

8) Determine the regression equation for CO2 emission with independent variables
Engine Size and Mass. You should analyze cars registered in 2002 and 2016 sepa-
rately. Comment on the fit of the model. Give the interpretation of the coefficients
of the regression equation.

9) The CO2 emission target is below 100g/km. Test at 1% significance level whether
the proportion of cars meeting the CO2 emission target in 2016 is lower than the
proportion of cars meeting the CO2 emission target in 2002. You should construct
the relevant confidence interval to support your answer.
