Assignment 3: Deep Foundations & Slope Stability

Lecturer: Mr. S.S. Muluti
Due Date: 01st April 2022 at 08:00 am Total: 80 Marks

Question 1 – Deep Foundations (30 marks)

(a) List the five (5) main criterions for classifying pile foundations. (5 marks)

(b) What is the difference between a bored pile and a displacement pile? (2 marks)

(c) Give any three advantages timber piles have over concrete piles. (3 marks)

(d) A multi-storey office block is to be supported on a piled raft foundation. Each pile, 800 mm
in diameter (D), is bored and cast in-situ to a depth of 16 m in a layered soil profile. The
vertical working load per pile is 2.5 MN. The material properties of the soil layers are shown
in the figure below. The water table is assumed to be at a great depth.

(i) Calculate the ultimate axial capacity of the pile and the factor of safety for the applied
load. Ignore the self-weight of the pile. (15 marks)

(ii) If the piles are to be spaced at 5D centre to centre, with a group efficiency 80%, how
many piles will be required to support the total building load of 100 MN? Assume an
overall factor of safety of 2.0. (5 marks)

2.5MN

Question 2 Slope Stability Analysis (50 marks)

a) Indicate whether each of the following is True or False:

i). The factor of safety is affected by the slope angle. (1 mark)
ii). Taylor’s method can be used in both homogeneous and heterogeneous soils. (1 mark)
iii). As the depth of excavation is increased, the factor of safety also increases. (1 mark)

b) List any four (4) basic modes of failure for earth slopes? (4 marks)

c) Briefly outline three (3) remedial measures that can be undertaken against failure of slopes.
(3 marks)
d) A 10 m tall slope with gradient 1V:1H has been constructed as detailed in the figure below.
The slope consists of three soil layers with material properties of γ' = 15 kN/m3, ϕ' = 27°,
and c' = 3 kPa for Soil 1; γ' = 18 kN/m3, ϕ' = 30°, and c' = 0 kPa for Soil 2; and γ' = 20 kN/m3,
ϕ' = 36°, and c' = 5 kPa for Soil 3.

Using Bishop’s simplified method of slices, analyze the stability of the slope and estimate
the factor of safety for the specified slip circle. Use a total of 10 slices and ignore the
formation of a tension crack. (40 marks)
