Sensor data will be sent to a controller and then to a municipal officer's mobile phone via GSM. The goals are to avoid accidents from open manholes, develop a low-cost long-life system, and provide real-time drainage monitoring to improve public health and infrastructure management. The methodology discusses the sensor hardware, system block diagram, and facilities required to implement the wireless sensor network for underground drainage monitoring.

ABSTRACT

Drainage is the system or process by which water, sewage or other

liquids are drained from a place and to maintain the proper function of
drainage, its condition should be monitored regularly. But manually it is
very difficult to monitor all area where a human cannot reach. This
influences the blockage of underground pipes and overflows of water
cause the health problem. To mitigate all these issues here we are
developed and implemented the system using wireless sensor network.
It consisting of small devices used to collect data. These sensing
devices are called node. The proposed system is low cost, less
maintenance, long life and web-based real time system, which update
the municipal officer by text message when any manhole crosses the
threshold value. This system directly impacts on the health issues of
citizens and worker who cleans the underground drainage. It also avoids
spreading of infection due to mosquitoes and gives clean and healthy
environment as well as controls the diseases such as malaria, dengue,
diarrhea, etc. The system reduces the accident caused by an exposed
manhole.
INTRODUCTION

Drainage is the system or process by which water, sewage or other

liquids are drained from a place. In order to maintain the proper
function of drainage, it should be monitored regularly. It is also difficult
to monitor all the area of drainage because of physical limitation of
human being. The irregular monitoring results in clogging the drainage
that forms the silt which triggers flooding in the neighborhood. Manual
monitoring is also inefficient. It required dedicated team which is only
able to maintain the limited record with less accuracy. These
weaknesses lead to the slow handling of problems in drainage. It also
has collapsed because of too much rain. These problems can be
mitigated with the help of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and it is
monitoring technology which consists of low power sensor nodes.
Sensor node consists of controller, memory, transceiver and battery to
supply the power to the sensor node. Size of the sensor node depends
on its application. In military application is microscopic small, its cost
depends upon its processing speed, memory and battery. The node
collects information from the surrounding areas and this sensed data is
exchanged with a base station. The main reason to use WSN for
continuous monitoring of environment where human cannot reach to
records the readings. WSN systems have a higher level of efficiency than
wire line network system in terms of cost, flexibility and reliability. This
paper will discuss the design of drainage systems to monitor conditions
by using wireless sensor network
LITRARTURE REVIEW
The sensor node is low-power, small size and multifunctional
embedded system. The sensor collects information from the
surrounding areas and this sensed relative data is exchanged it among
them as well as with a base station via a Sink node. The main reason to
use WSN for continuous monitoring such as environment ,agriculture,
real time monitoring , Industries , wastewater treatment, military,
battlefield where it is difficult or impossible for human being to access
or stay for a long time. The sensor node is deployed where a human
cannot reach to monitor and collect the data, so the operation of the
sensor node depends on inbuilt battery. More energy is consumed in
transceiver than that of processing. So Minimizing the Energy
consumption is a key challenge in WSN. This is very important to turn
off the radio as early as possible and it depends on specific application.
In an urban area, drainage has an important role in avoiding the danger
of floods. Many researchers have investigated the drainage system
which is related to drainage design as found in the study , while
research about management of drainage has not been much discussed.
In these studies emphasize was on control simulation of the sewerage
system for monitoring sensors and instrumentation drainage
conditions. While research related to the implementation of a wireless
sensor network in the management of the drainage system has not been
done. The proposed work focus on to design wireless sensor network
based underground drainage monitoring system.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this project is to provide the following objective to fulfill
the requirement of the Underground drainage monitoring system.
• To provide the user-friendly underground drainage system.
• To avoid the accidents due to the open manhole.
• To develop the low-cost system.
• To develop the system of which the lifetime is up to 240 days.
• To avoid spreading of infection due to mosquitoes.
• To sustain the healthy atmosphere in the city.
METHODOLOGY
The wireless sensor network is being used in the number of
applications out of that WSN is used in underground drainage/ sewage
monitoring system. The main research issue in WSN is energy
consumption and this can be overcome by using node level energy
saving. Sensor node collects surrounding parameter and its required
hardware and software should be energy efficient. In this design, the
ATmega328 microcontroller is used as a core element for fulfilling the
requirement of all function of the sensor node. ATmega328 is ultra-low
power high performance controller. Sensor gets the signal from the
environment and the original signal will be processed by the controller
and it will send the information to the base station
A. Sensors of System
Temperature Sensor:
Temp sensor DHT11- It is a digital sensor and it is used to
measure the real time temperature and humidity and send
digital data to the controller. It has a high accuracy of ±1
degree Celsius. The temperature range is 0 to 125 degree
Celsius. Supply voltage from 3.3- 5V with maximum
quiescent current 10 µA.
Ultrasonic Level Sensor:
The ultrasonic sensor HC-SR04 uses sonar to calculate the
distance to an object similar to bats do. It gives excellent
non-contact range detection with high accuracy and stable
readings and it is available in an easy-to-use package; it can
be calculated from 1 inch to 13 feet. This sensor uses Power
Supply of +5V DC having Quiescent Current less than
2mA.
Light Sensor:
The light sensor is used to check whether a manhole is open
or closed. When a manhole is opened light falls on the
sensor and it crosses the threshold value so it sends the data
to the controller. Meanwhile, this sensor sends the real time
data to the base station at regular intervals.
B. System Block Diagram
In this system sensor node consists of four parts GSM
(Global system for mobile communication) Module as a
transceiver, Arduino as Microcontroller, sensor and battery.
This sensor sends the data to Arduino and finally, this real
time data is sent on Municipal Corporation Mobile through
GSM and displays the same on Cloud. Nodes are deployed as per
manhole location.
