Introduction
Summit Evolution pro is generally used for preparing 3D setups using aerial images to collect 3D setup.
Generally, the images and the information of the cameras are provided by the client. Sometimes the
clients provide triangulated images and sometimes we need to conduct the triangulation. The steps to
develop a 3D setup will be discussed in this report.
Methodology
Step-1: Creating a Camera File
The first step is to develop a camera file. Generally, a calibration report is provided by the clients. The
camera file can be developed by taking information from the calibration report. Here two types of camera
will be considered.
1. UltraCam Xp &
2. Kavel10_Penta
To create a camera file first open the Summit Professional Application and click on the camera icon from
the tab as shown in the Figure 1.
Figure 1
The following dialogue box will appear (Figure 2). As both the cameras are digital cameras. So, we have to
check the digital camera and some more blank boxes will appear.
Figure 2
3
Now we have to fill up the blank boxes by taking information from the camera calibration report. Fill up
the basic information of the camera from the report as following (Figure 3). These information are
optional and are for getting an idea of the camera that is used.
Figure 3
The compulsory options are the Dimensions, Focal Length and Principal Point. This information must be
filled up correctly, otherwise 3D setup will not be correct. This can also be found from the calibration
report, but sometimes they are not clearly mentioned in the report. In the report of UltraCam Xp it is
mentioned clearly.
Figure 4
4
Before inputting the information of Principal Point, the mount rotation has to be considered. As the axis
of principal point changes according to the mount rotation. The orientation can be found from the report
(Figure 5). In this report, the mount rotation is 270 degree Counter Clockwise
Figure 5
So, the information will be changed according to the following table provided in the report (Figure 6).
Figure 6
2. For Kavel10_Penta
Similarly fill up the basic information as earlier. For example. Name, serial, date of report etc. (Figure 7)
Figure 7
5
Then check on the digital camera option and input the dimensions, focal length. The calibration report of
this camera is slightly different from the UltraCam, so the information is presented in a different way here
(Figure 8).
Figure 8
[Note: Here the dimensions are converted for the camera file, as you can see that the camera file requires
dimensions in mm, where as in the report the dimensions are given in pixels. Also, the pixel size is given
in the report, which is 4.6µm. That means 11608px= (11608*4.6*10-3) mm=53.3968mm; similarly,
8708px=40.0568mm.]
According to the report, the mount rotation was 90CCW, so Principal point X=y and Y=(-x) (Figure 9)

Figure 10
After adding the directories, the image files will appear in the dialogue box. And the “Overviews’ column
in the dialogue box represents if the pyramids of the image are developed or not. If the overviews column
shows the value ‘0’, then it means pyramids were not developed. So, to develop the pyramids select all
image files in the dialogue box and select ‘Process Image Overviews’, then click ‘Start’ on the dialogue box
(Figure 11).
Figure 11
Processing will take significant time depending on the number of images. After completion you will notice
that the Overviews are not zero anymore (Figure 12).
Figure 12

Figure 13
A new dialogue box will appear. Here you will need to input the camera file, images. Then select the
Average Elevation- Key In from the drop down and set the value to 0.00 (Figure 14).
Figure 14
2. Next step is to setup the exterior orientation. A text file is provided by the client in this regard. Go
to ‘Orientation’ and Select ‘Import Exterior…’ and select the text file from the directory (Figure
15).
Figure 15
8
In the new dialogue box, you will see that the text file has been imported. Now check the ‘Create new
format’ box and click on next. Now we have to remove the extra part rather than the numerical data, this
can be easily done by increasing the line number in the ‘Start import at’ box (Figure 16).
Figure 16
After removing the extra text click Next and in the new dialogue box check on different Field delimiter
options to separate the columns. Blue lines will appear separating the columns. Later select the Angle
type to ‘Decimal degrees’ and click Next. In the next dialogue box, you have to define the different
columns from the given options (Figure 17). Then click Next.
Figure 17
9
If all the images match with the given data, the next dialogue box will show the matched information in
green color (Figure 18). Click finish and save the format.
Figure 18
3. Now we have to generate the model. In the bottom right corner click on the ‘Models’ tab and
then click on the Hammer icon to generate models and then click ‘Ok’ (Figure 19).
Figure 1910
10
After this, the models will be generated. Now if you click on any of the model, 3D image will be shown on
the screen and you can see the 3D using the 3D equipment.

Conclusion
After creating the summit project, it is necessary to check properly if the 3D image is properly generated.
Sometimes, the 3D image is not properly generated and it becomes impossible to determine any point
correctly from the summit project. So, in that case, it is necessary to recheck the camera file. Sometimes
interchanging the dimensions may also correct the image.
