Welcome to ASL

Hello Parents,

I wish to welcome all of you and the students back into the ASL
Artemis Salazar classroom. I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday break!

My name is Artemis. I have been working closely with Ms.

Class Expectations
The purpose of understanding these class expectations is to help students to learn effectively
in the class,

Students are expected to be respectful by cooperating with teachers, staff, and peers,
communicating respectfully, and expressing language kindly.

● No voice (for learning purpose)


● Raise your hand if you have questions or do not know what the sign means
● Help other students
● Do not use hateful language

Attendance
Absence:
● Per the State of Arizona, a student must be in school and not miss more than 10% of the
instructional days in order to receive credit.
● For absences, please check schoology and the file folder to find out what activities and
lessons you missed. It is YOUR responsibility to find out what make-up work you need to do.
Any assessments missed MUST be made up the next day, outside of class time.
Tardiness:
● If you are tardy, give me your tardy slip and take your seat silently.

Classroom Procedures
Once students enter in the classroom, they are expected to sign in the class without their voice.
Signing without using the voice is essential for acquiring ASL effectively.

Students are expected to start on bellwork immediately. The instructions and questions will be
on the board and Powerpoint slides.

Students are expected to follow the rules of ASL by using appropriate facial expressions, body
language and signing in the correct ASL grammar order.

Course Description:
● You will be taught using American Sign Language, ASL, in the classroom. 95% of lessons will
be conducted in ASL. You will learn about Deaf history and culture, audiology, and assistive
technology that Deaf people use.
How your Grade will be calculated:
Bellwork 10% Each bellwork is worth 5 points for a total of 25
points. You will do either a signed or written
bellwork at the beginning of each class.

Participation 25% You are expected to participate in all activities


every day. This includes, but is not limited to,
class conversations, and signing with your peers.

Projects 25% Our projects will be focussed on ASL history,


Deaf culture and your ASL skills.

Celebrations of Acquisition 20% The celebration of knowledge will tell me how


much you have learned within the unit.

Final Exams 20% The final exam has three sections: Expression,
Receptive and Written portion
