Density SimActivity

1) The document describes an interactive simulation that allows users to explore the concepts of density, mass, and volume. Users can observe how objects with the same mass but different volumes can have different densities, and vice versa. 2) The simulation instructions guide students to experiment with sinking and floating different materials, compare properties of objects with the same mass/volume/density, and create custom blocks to further investigate factors that influence an object's density. 3) Students are asked to record data from their experiments, calculate densities, make observations, and discuss their findings in order to build understanding of the relationships between mass, volume, density, and whether objects will sink or float.

Exploring Floating and Sinking
Learning Objectives:
1) Describe how the concept of density relates to an object's mass and volume.
2) Explain how objects of similar mass can have differing volume, and how objects of similar
volume can have differing mass.
3) Explain why changing an object's mass or volume does not affect its density (ie, understand
density as an intensive property).
4) Measure the volume of an object by observing the amount of fluid it displaces.
5) Identify an unknown material by calculating its density and comparing to a table of known
densities.

7. Calculating Density (5min)
We can figure out the density of blocks using division if we know their volume and mass.
The equation is Density=Mass ÷ Volume. Let’s try this using the “Mystery”!
