1. SCOPE
SH 2
This document provides installation instructions for the ECDIS Color Calibration File and
LCD Backlight Control Cable.
EB4302605
The color calibration file for a specific LCD monitor provides the necessary data for the
ECDIS to provide the proper red, blue & green video output levels for compliance with IEC
61174, ECDIS. The necessary data for the specific display will be supplied by the
manufacturer on a disk. When a display is installed or replaced, it is required that the color data
DWG NO
file provided for this monitor be installed on the navigation computer which is connected to
this monitor.
The purpose of this interface is to provide a means for the navigation computer to control the
LCD backlight. This function is necessary to enable an LCD monitor to meet several ECDIS
requirements. The control will vary the display’s brightness for Day (Day Bright, Day White
Back & Day Black Back), Dusk and Night (Night and Night Red-for VisionMaster only)
conditions via a RS-422 communications. Commercial VMS release 5.0 and above (Paragraph
3.0) as well as VisionMaster release 2.0 and above (Paragraph 4.0) will use this interface to
automatically set the LCD backlight to correct luminance for the ambient light condition
selected by the operator, based on the display calibration data stored in the PC. When a
different setting is selected, the software will output a serial message to the LCD, setting the
backlight brightness to the calibrated level for this setting. The software will monitor periodic
communications of this serial interface to detect failure and will display an alarm message to
the user if the serial interface fails.
The operator is able to (not recommended) manually vary the backlight intensity from this
point by moving the control knob from the indexed setting.
The following procedures should be utilized to load the new color calibration data. Refer to the
correct software version for applicable procedure.
Note: If a color calibration data file is not available, contact Sperry with model and serial
numbers for this information.

CONTROL CABLE FOR THE VOYAGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
SH 4
A. Install cable PN 4302166 from COM Port 13 or first open COM port on ECDIS PC and an
available COM PORT on the LCD. Refer to Figure 1 LCD Backlight Control Cable.
EB4302605
B. Refer to Paragraph 3.3 to configure the VMS so COM port 13 is assigned to LCD Control.
C. Verify no alarms
LCD monitors have only a single operator-accessible control, for setting the brightness (also known as
backlight intensity or black level). Contrast adjustments for LCD monitors are preset to an optimal
setting, and there is no contrast control on the monitor. LCD controls are marked with an indexed
setting, calibrated at the time of system installation. Generally, before making an adjustment for
ambient light, the control should be set to its indexed position.
On workstations that are configured for an LCD monitor, the system software has the capability to
automatically set the optimal monitor brightness level, based upon known display characteristics of the
hardware. The automatic adjustment is made whenever a new ambient light option is selected. Once
the automatic setting for monitor brightness has been made, the manual controls can be used to change
monitor brightness from the preset level if necessary.
To ensure that the chart display conforms to established standards, it is recommended that the monitor
brightness check be performed after changing the setting for ambient light. For more information on
the brightness check, see Paragraph 3.2. Also, the monitor color test should be performed periodically.

4. INSTALLATION AND CHECKOUT PROCEDURES FOR BACKLIGHT
SH 13
A. Install LCD backlight cable and buzzer control connections per section 4.1.
EB4302605
B. Refer to Paragraph 4.2 to configure the system so the PCIO serial and discrete output ports
are assigned to LCD backlight control and buzzer output.
C. Verify no alarms or warning. Alarms and Warnings that would be displayed in case of
issues are:
-Colors Not Approved-This warning indicates the color file loaded (see Paragraph
DWG NO
2.2) is missing, invalid, has a bad filename, or is located in the wrong directory.
-Monitor Comm Error: Bad Data-This warning indicates that the LCD failed to
acknowledge a command.
-Monitor Comm Error: No Response-This warning indicates that the system is
unable to communicate with the LCD.
For information on other alarms and warnings, consult the user’s manual or the interactive,
electronic training manual built in to VisionMaster.
D. Set and test display brightness and colors per VisionMaster FT Ship’s Manual, document
number 65900011, or as stated below in Paragraphs 4.3 through 4.4.
A VisionMaster system has two types of configurations for the LCD control and buzzer connections.
These depend on the type of monitor being used. For a monitor that has both an LCD backlight control
and a built in buzzer, refer to Figures 2 and 3. FIGURE 2 COMBINED SERIAL/BUZZER CABLE
provides information on the cable and its connection to the LCD while FIGURE 3 SERIAL/BUZZER
CABLE TO PCIO CONNECTIONS shows how the cable is connected to the PCIO.
For a system that uses a monitor that does not have a built in buzzer, refer to Figures 4 and 5. FIGURE

the brightness check, see Paragraph 4.4.
In addition to the brightness check, a periodic test of chart colors should be carried out to evaluate the
performance of the LCD. Refer to User’s Manual for more information.
The brightness check is a method for accurately setting the monitor’s brightness control, and the
