EXAMPLES

Pre-cast : Heydar Aliyev Center

The Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, is a striking
contemporary example of a building that extensively uses pre-cast
concrete. Designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid and
completed in 2012, the Heydar Aliyev Center is known for its
flowing, curved, and organic architectural forms.

The building's distinctive shape, characterized by undulating

curves and smooth surfaces, was made possible through the use of
pre-cast concrete panels. These panels were cast off-site and then
assembled to create the seamless, sculptural exterior of the
structure. The absence of traditional columns or supporting
structures on the facade is a testament to the capabilities of pre-
cast concrete in achieving innovative and unconventional architectural designs.

The Heydar Aliyev Center stands as an iconic example of contemporary architecture that leverages the flexibility and versatility of
pre-cast concrete to push the boundaries of form and function.

PRE FABRICATED: HABITAT 67 BY SADFIE ARCHITECTS

Habitat 67, designed by architect Moshe Safdie for Expo 67 in Montreal, became a pioneering example of prefabricated building
construction. Its innovative approach lay in the use of modular
design and off-site fabrication. Safdie's vision involved creating
a sense of community within a high-density urban environment
while affording residents private outdoor spaces. To achieve
this, he designed a series of reinforced concrete modules, each
containing a room or apartment unit, which were prefabricated
in a factory. These modules were then transported to the
construction site and stacked and interconnected like building
blocks. This approach significantly reduced construction time
and costs while allowing for diverse apartment arrangements
and striking architectural aesthetics.

Cast in place: Cidade das Artes

Cidade das Artes, a renowned cultural complex in Rio de

Janeiro, Brazil, was cast in place using concrete to realize its
innovative architectural design. The decision to employ cast-
in-place concrete construction was driven by the need for a
high degree of architectural customization and flexibility. This method allowed the architects and engineers to create intricate, site-
specific shapes and structural elements that are difficult to achieve with precast concrete or other construction techniques.
Additionally, cast-in-place construction offered the advantage of integrating building services into the structure while providing
excellent structural strength and durability, essential for a building of this size and purpose. This approach, although labor-intensive
and time-consuming, resulted in the iconic and visually striking Cidade das Artes, contributing significantly to Rio's cultural
landscape.

The use of cast-in-place concrete in Cidade das Artes also benefited from local expertise, as Brazil has a history of employing this
construction method. It allowed for precise adaptation to the local conditions and topography, enhancing the project's practicality. The
final structure seamlessly combines architectural aesthetics, functionality, and structural integrity, making it a testament to the
architectural and engineering possibilities achievable with cast-in-place concrete.
