locations of volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and mountain ranges.
The learners should be able to:
1. demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness during earthquakes,
PERFORMANCE tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions; and
2. suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to government efforts in
reducing damage due to earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
MOST ESSENTIAL
LEARNING  Describe the different types of plate boundaries (S10ES – Ia-j-36.2).

CONCEPTS Types of Plate Boundaries

 Divergent Plate Boundary - is formed when two tectonic plates move apart
from each other.

 Convergent Plate Boundary - is formed when two plates move toward each
other. It has three types – Oceanic-Continental, Oceanic-Oceanic, and
Continental-Continental Convergent Boundary.

 Transform fault boundary - is formed when two plates are sliding past each
other.

PARTICIPANTS’ TASK / ACTIVITY
ELICIT Climbing Dreams: The Forces Behind Earth's Faults
(5 MINUTES) 1. Unscramble the letters to uncover a missing word and then match a picture to
illustrate the type of stress being described.
Types of Stress The force applied to rocks and
the Earth's crust, which can
STRESS
cause deformation or changes in
shape.

Stress that stretches or pulls

TENSILE
rocks apart

Stress that squeezes or pushes

COMPRESSIVE
rocks together

Stress that causes rocks to slide

SHEAR
past each other horizontally

2. Unscramble words to find missing words and match the right fault to its related
stress, positioning fault pictures opposite stress pictures on the board.

Think About It: What do you think causes Earth's stresses and faults?

Wish Upon a Plate: Solving Plate Boundary Puzzles

Arrange the puzzle pieces in correct order to show the three types of Plate
Boundaries.

ENGAGE
(5 MINUTES)

Reaching New Heights: Tasty Tectonics

Objective: To introduce, model, and demonstrate how Earth’s plates move.
Materials: Biscuits, Tasty Bread, Peanut Butter, Spoon, Plate
Procedure:
Group No. Types of Plate Boundaries
1 Divergent Boundary
EXPLORE 2 Oceanic-Continental Convergent Boundary
(15 MINUTES) 3 Oceanic-Oceanic Convergent Boundary
4 Continental-Continental Convergent Boundary
5 Transform Boundary
Guide Questions:
1. What do the different materials represent?
2. What type of plate boundary is modelled?
3. Describe what happened.
Group Presentation
Each group presents its work and is graded according to the following rubric:
Score (pts) Characteristics/Criteria
10pts Well organized, clear, and complete explanation.
Excellent presentation
8pts Well organized and explain ideas with clarity. Very
good presentation
6pts Well organized but lacks some explanation.
4pts Consistent and adequately organized but lacks
EXPLAIN more than one reason.
(10 MINUTES) 2pts Does not address the topic. Poor presentation.
After the group presentation, determine the type of stress and fault associated with
plate boundaries by placing plate boundary pictures next to fault pictures from the
first activity.
SEL Integration
SEL Competency(ies): Self-awareness, Social-awareness.
Strategy: Express your reaction to the following questions by raising your preferred
emoji (Heart, Happy, Sad, Confused):
1. How did you feel working with your groupmates?
2. How do you feel about the rating given to your group by your classmates?

term for the boundary type and placing checkmarks next to its geological
consequences..

ELABORATE
(5 MINUTES) Science Connection:
Outside of plate boundaries, 'divergent' and 'convergent' have broad uses. In
psychology, they describe modes of thinking. In math, they deal with series, and in
physics, they relate to kinds of curved mirrors.

Directions: Indicate whether the diagram illustrates a case of divergence or

convergence.

SEL Integration
SEL Competency(ies): Responsible decision-making.
Strategy: During an earthquake, what will you do first? (Value-voting)
a. Post in social media “Ay lumindol!”
b. Pray
c. Duck, cover and hold

Plate Boundaries Quiz

Directions: Underline the correct word/s from the choices inside the parenthesis to
complete the sentence in each given item.
1. The relative motion of the plates at the transform fault boundary is
(moving away, sliding past) each other.
2. The relative motion of the plates at the divergent boundary is moving
EVALUATION
(away, toward) each other.
(5 MINUTES)
3. The relative motion of the plates at the convergent boundary is
moving (away, toward) each other.
4. At the convergent boundary between continental plate and
continental plate, (volcanoes, mountain ranges) are formed.
5. The interaction of plates at the transform boundary produces major
(mountains, earthquakes).
