Learning Pavlov

This document discusses different types of learning including classical and operant conditioning. It describes Pavlov's experiments with dogs where they learned to associate food with a stimulus. It also discusses Skinner's work on operant conditioning and how reinforcement can increase behaviors. Types of learning, features of learning, conditioning experiments and the differences between classical and operant conditioning are covered.

1
Learning Name of Institution

• Learning may be defined as “any relatively

permanent change in behaviour or
behavioural potential produced by practice
or experience”.

2
Features of Learning
Name of Institution

The process of learning has certain distinctive

characteristics.

1st) Learning always involves some kinds of

experience.

2nd) Behavioural changes that occur due to

learning are relatively permanent.

3
What is Not Learning?
Name of Institution

Behavioural changes occur due to the use of

drugs, or fatigue. Such changes are
temporary. They are NOT considered
learning.

4
Types: Name of Institution

The simplest kind of learning is called

conditioning. 2 types of conditioning have
been identified.
1) Classical conditioning, and
2) Instrumental or Operant conditioning.

5
Classical Conditioning
Name of Institution

• This type of learning was first reported by Ivan P. Pavlov.

• He was primarily interested in the physiology of digestion.
• During his studies he noticed that the experimental dogs
started secreting saliva (reflexive response) even on
seeing the empty plate in which food was served
previously.

7
Stages Name of Institution

When CS & US are present together-

Simultaneous conditioning

8
Instrumental/Operant Name of Institution

Learning
• This type of conditioning was first investigated
by B.F. Skinner.
• It focuses on using either reinforcement or
punishment to increase or decrease a behavior.
• This type of conditioning allows an association to
form between the behavior and the
consequences for that behavior.
• Animal trainers often use this form of
conditioning during training.

Skinner Box Experiment
Name of Institution

10
Differences Name of Institution

1. Basic feature of operant conditioning is

reinforcement, classical conditioning
relies more on association between
stimuli and responses.
2. Operant conditioning is based on
voluntary behavior, while classical
conditioning often involves involuntary
reflexive behavior.
