great location, and top-notch customer service.

With a creative marketing, and a quality choice of plants and garden supplies for
my customers, Nursery intends to make its presence known in the nursery community.

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the project

EBA Plant Nursery is dedicated to providing a quality choice for people looking
for plant and garden supplies. I will offer a wide variety of grafted, cuttings and seeds
fruit trees (Rambutan, Cacao, Bread fruit, Miracle fruit, Calamansi, coffee) vegetable
plants (Siling Labuyo, Eggplant, Tomato, Okra) Ornamental plants (adenium,
bougainvillea, exotic plants) along with a selection of garden supplies. Most of the
plants I will sell will be grown in my own greenhouse. With a convenient location at Sitio
Dalimuno, Bantay, Tabuk City, Kalinga Province. EBA Plant Nursery intends to
successfully market to the residential customer, farm owners and as well as landscape
contractors.

The access roads to the nursery are sufficiently wide to allow vehicles to
maneuver during peak planting periods to facilitates supervision and movement of the
materials. And the water source of the plant nursery came from nearby chico river,
intake pipe connects with a pump unit. And lastly, the site chosen are not prone to
flooding, which will damage seedlings and other nursery facilities.

For successful germination of seeds and plant growth, proper soil mix are ready
and maintain in the nursery. Plant nursery have sufficient stock of sand, red or black
soil, sphagnum moss, peat moss, vermiculture, compost, sawdust, and farmyard
manure. The soil is the most important ingredient in the nursery business and must be
available at low pricing. To make the soil more economical it is suggested to prepare a
growth medium with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5 inside the nursery. My start – up
requirements will be Php 600,000.00.

The profits made here in this business are huge due to extremely less production
cost. Profits in this business are determined by the quantity produced. A well cared
plant will produce enormous number of stems. This does not depend on the availability
of the land. Thus, even a small area can earn more income. For this I have to look after
the growth of each plant wisely. Proper catering and harvesting at right time are
necessary for more production. Another benefit of this business is it is said to exhibit
one-time investment. Once the stems are planted, they continue to grow for more
decades.

EBA Plant Nursery target market strategy is based on becoming an attractive

choice for homeowners/residence, farm owner and landscape contractors in Tabuk City,
Kalinga. The target market I am going to pursue is the residential consumers looking for
a wide variety of plants and trees to beautify their residences. People will want to shop
at my location because of the customer service that I will provide. EBA Plant Nursery
would like to see a five to ten percent increase in customers annually.

The nursery business is highly competitive, and it is important to maintain a high

level of customer service, offer quality products, and give the consumer a wide variety
of choices when shopping for plants and trees. Healthy plants will be a top priority, and I
will display the plants artistically. Plants are commodity that will always have a market
as people consider them to be very important to have around their residences.

Through the increasing demand for horticultural crops more particularly fruit and
ornamental ones in both urban, rural areas of the City of Tabuk and other municipalities
of Kalinga province. Some farm owners, residence and landscape contractors they go
to other provinces to purchase ornamentals and grafted fruit tress seedlings. So, I
decided to put up my own nursery business to cater their needs in ornamentals and
grafted fruit tress seedlings.

Objectives

EBA Plant Nursery is aims;

 To provide a wide variety of ornamental plants, vegetable plants and

fruit trees.
 To provide quality and affordable seedlings, and garden accessories
such as ponds, statues, potting soils, fertilizers, and garden tools.
Project scope

The project scope will focus on providing a wide variety of ornamental plants,
vegetable plants and fruit trees and provide quality and affordable seedlings, and
garden accessories such as ponds, statues, potting soils, fertilizers, and garden tools.

Expected outcome of the project

The quality planting materials production will increase. The Nursery of

nearby areas can able to get good quality vegetable seedlings as well as

Location of the project

EBA Plant nursery is located at Sitio Dalimuno, Bantay, Tabuk City, Kalinga
Province.

Bantay is a barangay in the city of Tabuk in the Province of Kalinga. They

promote the propagation of fruit bearing trees in line with their goal to be the fruit basket
of the city.

Definition of terms

Organic fertilizer. It refers to the formulation of various waste and residues substantially
decomposed within several days through mineral or commercial fertilizer mined from
mineral deposits or manufactured from synthetic compounds.

Greenhouses. It refers to glasshouse, building designed for the protection of tender or

out-of-season plants against excessive cold or heat.

Budding Knife. It refers to a small knife with a type of spatula at the other end of the
handle. The rootstock or stock plant may be cut off above the bud at budding, or one
may wait until it is certain that the bud is growing.

Pruning Shears. It refers to a type of scissors for use on plants. They are strong enough
to prune hard branches of trees and shrubs, sometimes up to two centimeters’ thick.

Pruning Saw. It refers to a saw that has a usually tapering straight or curved blade and
either a closed or an open and sometimes folding handhold and that may or may not be
attached to a pole.
Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A nursery is a place where plants are propagated and grown to a desired size.
Mostly the plants concerned are for gardening, forestry or conservation biology, rather
than agriculture.

They include retail nurseries, which sell to the general

public, wholesale nurseries, which sell only to businesses such as other nurseries and
to commercial gardeners, and private nurseries, which supply the needs of institutions
or private estates. Some will also work in plant breeding.

Some nurseries specialize in certain areas, which may include: propagation and
the selling of small or bare root plants to other nurseries, growing out plant materials to
a saleable size, or retail sales (McDaniel,1980). Nurseries may also specialize in one
type of plant: e.g., groundcovers, shade plants, or rock garden plants. Some produce
bulk stock, whether seedlings or grafted, of particular varieties for purposes such as fruit
trees for orchards, or timber trees for forestry. Some produce stock seasonally, ready in
springtime for export to colder regions where propagation could not have been started
so early, or to regions where seasonal pests prevent profitable growing early in the
season.

Chapter 3
METHODOLOGY

Materials needed
Purchase the necessary nursery materials (fencing, construction material, tools,
pots, plastic potting bags, etc.) well in advance of the planned start-up date. Early
purchase of materials will avoid delays in planting or transplanting. Costs may be
reduced and local acceptance increased by the use of local materials and labor and the
integration of local knowledge into the design and construction work. Materials not
available locally can normally be acquired from government forestry off ices or
agricultural suppliers.
A list of materials could include the following: plow, hoe, rented draft animal or
hand tractor, shovels, budding knife, pruning shears, pruning saw, pots (plastic bags,
bamboo, clay), plastic sheets, spade, wood or wire fencing, construction materials for a
shed/ green houses, watering cans or hose, soil, sand, compost, and 55 -gallon drums.

Production approach

b. Others

Nursery is developed gradually. The mother plants planted for vegetative and seed
propagation and seed propagated plants such as seasonal flower; seedlings are raised
for sale simultaneously.
Important factors considered for establishing a nursery are agro-climatic conditions,
soil types, soil pH, location, area, irrigation facilities, communication, market demand,
availability of germplasm or mother plants, skilled persons, etc.

Selection of site: The site selected for raising a nursery should preferably be located
near marketing centres for the convenience of transportation of the products with
minimum or no damage. The site should be convenient enough for transportation of
input materials also. It is important to have or develop a perennial source of water inside
the nursery. If need arises, wind breaks of tall plants like eucalyptus, aonla, seedling
mango, etc. may be planted to provide necessary shade and protection.

Product choice: The product choice will primarily depend on the market demand in
nearby areas. For wider market coverage, the choice may be dependent on market
studies in the desired areas. Varieties of various ornamental plants like shade loving
foliage plants, flowering plants, creepers, plants suitable for parks, gardens and
roadside plantations, offices, business houses, hospitals, residential buildings, etc. may
be propagated in the nursery. Planting materials such as seedlings of flowers, bulbs,
corms, etc. may also be produced. A list of some popular ornamental plant species is
furnished in Annexure I. However, the list is not exhaustive.

Seedbed and nursery beds: For raising flower seedlings, some permanent or
temporary structures for seed bed may be prepared. These beds will be minimum 0.5 to
0.75 m high from ground level. The beds may be 0.75m to 1.00m in breadth and length
may be as per the availability of land. The nursery beds will be prepared for storing of
perennial plants or the plants that should be kept for sale.

Collection and planting of mother plants: The plantation of mother plants is an

important work for developing a nursery. The mother plants must be true to the type and
true to the variety. The plants should be properly labelled. Collection of exotic type of
mother plants is a continuous process or job. The mother plants may be maintained
properly for their vigorous growth; otherwise number of propagated plants will get
reduced. Storage of dried, cleaned soil and compost manure: For raising flower
seedlings during rainy or early winter season, the soil and compost would be stored
during hot or summer months. In rainy season, collection of dried soil and manure is
very difficult. Without these, the seedlings cannot be raised during rainy season.

Production of flower seeds: Production of flower seeds is highly specialized job. The
seeds should be produced carefully. If the quality of seed is good, the percentage of
seed

germination, seedlings vigour, vegetative and reproductive growth of the crops will be
good. After harvesting of quality seeds, germination percentage of seeds and seedling
vigour should be checked before marketing of seeds.
Storage of propagated plants in nursery beds: The propagated plants are planted in
nursery beds for better growth or hardening the plants. In general, this type of nursery
bed is prepared under partial shade.

Manuring: Manuring is to be done very carefully. Vigorous growth of plant is always

attractive to the buyer. Again, heavy manuring is not beneficial for storage of plants.
Watering: Like manuring, watering is also important. Watering will be done according to
need of the plant. The nursery should have a water source of its own. For this model,
digging a well (12 m deep x 3 m dia) and installation of a 2.0 HP kerosene pumpset with
accessories are considered. Sprinkler system of irrigation is not advisable at the
beginning.

Drainage: For sufficient vegetative and reproductive growth of plants, good drainage
system must be developed in between the beds and around the nursery. Adequately
gentle slope in the pot bed surface is also desirable. It is extremely important to ensure
that water logging does not occur in and around the pots and beds.

Plant protection: Keen observation on attack of different pests and diseases is

required. If the mother plants are infected, the propagated plants will be infected also.
Necessary control measures should be taken immediately on observation

Harvesting: The seeds, bulbs, etc. need to be harvested in the proper stage. Only
completely ripe seeds are ready for harvesting. Seed capsules should be covered with
muslin cloth or by the paper bag before ripening in cases of light seeds (like calendula,
balsam, etc.) which may blow off due to wind or those species the fruits of which may
burst while ripening. This will prevent loss of seeds.

Corms and bulbs are generally harvested when the leaves start yellowing or when they
dry up. These are dug out carefully without imparting any injury. Before harvest, nursery
stock should be mature. The tissues are hardened against water loss and shrinkage. It
is a common practice to defoliate shrubs and trees some days before they are to be dug
out. This can be done by chemical defoliants, by withholding water or by hand.

Protection and Maintenance

Besides drying out, harsh sun, and the dangers to seedling growth cited above,
other problems exist of which nursery managers must be aware. These include dangers
from livestock, people, pests, and fires.
Seedlings have no chance for survival if they are trampled on or eaten by
livestock. To protect the area from livestock, 24-hour surveillance or fencing is required.
This may not seem to be so important where few livestock roam, but it may only take
several animals to wipe out months of work. A combination of fencing and surveillance
may be necessary if other problems include theft and pedestrian traffic.
For surveillance, people must be available and willing to work regularly. In the case of
a permanent nursery, a worker may be willing to live at the site. The cost of paying
workers must be considered, as it is unrealistic to hope that people will volunteer to
watch the nursery for the entire time it will be operating. Food, money, shelter with land,
or any other locally acceptable form of payment should be used.
Fencing is the best alternative to hiring a full-time worker the type of fencing used will
depend on availability and purchase and construction costs. Cost and availability are
usually linked: the cost of the fencing often depends on the type of material available.
Before deciding on the type of fencing, determine the local land use patterns. Be aware
that fences may cut off a walkway or traditional grazing area of which you are unaware.
Plan around customs, and ensure that change will not adversely affect area residents.
Local materials may be used entirely or in part to save money. Bamboo, wood stakes,
layered branches from thorn trees, and other structurally sound materials are adequate
assuming they are maintained regularly. Another option is to purchase wire fencing from
an agricultural supply store. A live fence, which can provide fertilizer, seed, and rooting
stock, is also viable if there is sufficient time to wait for the trees to mature.
