Aims and Learning Objectives

The aim of this course is to introduce the students some ideas and techniques from Coordinate
Geometry, Determinants, Matrices and Calculus which will help students appreciate the role of
Mathematics in Architectural Engineering.

Course Synopsis

1. Coordinate Geometry: Cartesian coordinates, distance formula, lines – standard forms of


equations, angle between two straight lines, parallel and perpendicular lines, Introduction to
conic section – circle, parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola.

2. Determinants: Determinants of the second and third order, solutions of simultaneous linear
equations in three unknowns- Cramer’s rule.

3. Matrices: Transpose and inverse of a matrix, solutions of set of linear equations, eigenvalues
and eigenvectors.

4. Differentiation: Standard differential coefficients, differentiation of polynomial functions,


function of a function, logarithmic and parametric differentiation, equation of a tangent.

5. Integration: Standard integrals, integration of polynomial functions, integration by parts and


partial fractions, area under curves.

6. Differential Equations: Solutions of simple first order differential equations by direct


integration method, separation of variables, homogeneous equations and linear equations.

Modes of assessment: Tests (3) and Exam (1).

CA Mark = Tests Average Final Mark: 33% CA + 67% Exam
