To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing this recommendation letter in support of Mary Chappelear “MC” Warner for
the South Carolina Journalist of the Year award. I had the honor of teaching MC English 2
Honors during her sophomore year at Wando High School. Since her sophomore year and
my move into administration, we have maintained a close relationship, and I have watched
her grow into an incredible young woman, scholar, leader, and journalist.

From the very first day of her sophomore year, MC impressed me with her tenacity and
Wando High School inquisitive nature. Discussion was an integral part of my course, and MC never shied away

current events to philosophical ideas. Her ability to view these topics with an almost

Associate Superintendent of the actively seeks out feedback on her ideas and her writing. She continually challenges
High School Learning Community herself by enrolling in honors and AP courses, accepting leadership positions in
Newspaper, founding a craft club, and maintaining a high GPA.

Once MC found her footing in the world of journalism, she has been unstoppable. She
joined our newspaper staff when a lot of changes were occurring to the program, and she
readily accepted the challenge of essentially creating something new. She had a clear
vision for how she would be able to contribute to the new program, and she clearly
succeeded because she was named Co-Editor in Chief this year. Over the summer, she and
her co-editor worked long hours to redesign the paper. I was able to travel to Boston with
our Newspaper and Yearbook students this year, and I was incredibly impressed with MC’s
leadership abilities. She took the time to motivate the members of her staff, listen to their
concerns, and redirect them when needed. Utilizing many of the qualities listed above, she
has also earned the respect of faculty and staff members at Wando.

MC won 2nd place in the National Scholastic Press Association’s Best of Show competition
for news design. She also wrote a powerful editorial about political influence in our local
school board that garnered a lot of attention on social media platforms.

MC has a voice that will be heard, and she will be successful in life. I have no doubt she
will continue to grow and to learn and to contribute to the world around her. I am proud to
know her, and I am proud to recommend her for your prestigious award.

Sincerely,

Erin C Lowry
