2020 Y11 Advanced Task 2 Investigation

This document is an assessment task for a Year 11 Mathematics Advanced course. It consists of four parts: Part A involves graphing functions from pictures and answering questions about the graphs' equations, domains, ranges, and other properties. Part B involves using trigonometry to solve a problem about the height of a tower given angles of elevation. Part C covers working with radians. Part D will be an in-class validation test applying the concepts from Parts A-C. The task covers several syllabus outcomes relating to algebraic techniques, trigonometry, technology, and justifying conclusions.

require you to use your knowledge and understanding in parts A-C to complete
further questions.
› MA11-1 uses algebraic and graphical techniques to solve, and where
Syllabus Outcomes:
appropriate, compare alternative solutions to problems
A Student…… › MA11-3 uses the concepts and techniques of trigonometry in the solution of
equations and problems involving geometric shapes
› MA11-8 uses appropriate technology to investigate, organise, model and
interpret information in a range of contexts
› MA11-9 provides reasoning to support conclusions which are appropriate to
the context
PART A Functions and relations (40 Marks)
For Part A, you are required to write down the correct equations for each graph within the picture and answer some
questions about each graph. You may use Desmos (www.desmos.com), graphics calculators or other graphing
software to assist you.

PART B Trigonometry (10 Marks)

A tower ( AB) is shown below. Person C is due south of the tower and Person D is due east of the tower.
Person C observes the top of the tower from an angle of elevation of 20° while person D observes the top
of the tower from an angle of elevation of 25° . Person C and Person D are 200m apart.

PART C Radians (4 Marks)

The diagram below shows a Reuleaux triangle, which is formed by obtaining an equilateral triangle of side
length r, and forming circular arcs along each side of the triangle. The centre of each arc is the opposite
vertex of the triangle. Eg/ The centre of arc AB is C .

Show that the area of the Reuleaux triangle is
