B. Motivation (Engage)
The
teacher tells the students that today, kites come in different colors,
shapes, and designs.

Trivia for the students:

A simple kite would look like this! Kites were invented in China. They
were made of split bamboo and silk and were used in the military for
signaling and observation.

The teacher asks the students the following questions:

1. Do you have a kite? Observe and describe the
shape.
2. How many pairs of congruent angles are there?
3. Are the diagonals congruent? Perpendicular?
Do they intersect at their midpoints?
4. Do the diagonals bisect the kite’s angles? If so,
which ones?
Key:
1. Yes. The kite has four sides.
2. Only 1
3. The diagonals are not congruent. The diagonals are perpendicular,
and it also intersects at their midpoint.
4. Yes, the diagonals bisect the kite’s angle.

C. Discussion of concepts (Explore)

KITE M

A T
A kite is a quadrilateral with two distinct pairs of
adjacent and congruent sides.

H
Given that MATH is a kite, the following
definitions can be stated:
 MA and MT is a pair of adjacent congruent sides.
AH and TH is a pair of adjacent congruent sides.
Thus, MA ≅ MT and AH ≅ TH
 The diagonals of a kite are perpendicular to each other. Thus,
AT ⊥ MH
 MH is called the major diagonal and AT is called the minor
diagonal. Thus, MH > AT
The properties of a kite can be best presented using the following
theorems:
Theorem #1: The major diagonal of a kite bisects the minor diagonal.
1
Theorem #2: The area of a kite with diagonals d 1 and d 2 is A= d 1 d 2
2

D. Developing Mastery (Explain)

Directions: Answer the following:
1. ▱ MATH is a kite with major diagonal MH and minor
diagonal AT intersecting at S . If AS=35 cm ,
then ST =?
2. ▱ MATH is a kite with major diagonal MH and minor
diagonal AT intersecting at S . If AS=( 12 x−11 ) cm and
ST =(8 x +1)cm . Solve for the value of x .
3. ▱ MATH is a kite. Find the area of kite MATH if
x=15 cm , w=12 cm, z=20 cm .
4. ▱ MATH is a kite. Find the value of x if the area of kite
2
MATH = 50 c m , d 1=5 cm , d 2=( 3 x+5 ) cm

E. Application and Generalization (Elaborate)

The teacher summarizes the Theorems on Kite.
Theorem #1: The major diagonal of a kite bisects the minor diagonal.
1
Theorem #2: The area of a kite with diagonals d 1 and d 2 is A= d 1 d 2
