EE 01 - LM - Color Coding of Resistors

A resistor is an electronic component that restricts current flow in a circuit. It has two leads and its resistance is measured in ohms. Resistors come in different ratings and are color coded for identification. The color bands indicate the resistance value and tolerance.

Primary type of physical component that is

used in electronic circuits. It has two

(interchangeable) leads. The material placed
internally between the two leads of a
resistor (restricts the flow of current)

Main Characteristics:

1. It’s resistance (R) is measured in ohms..

The resistors are available from a
fraction of an ohm to many mega ohms.
2. The wattage rating.. The power rating
may be as high or as low. Power rating
indicates the maximum wattage the
resistor can dissipate without excessive
heat.
CLASSIFICATION OF RESISTORS

HOW TO READ IT

• Resistors are color coded for easy reading.

• To determine the value of a given resistor look for the gold or silver tolerance band and
hold the resistor with this band to the right.
• Then read the colored bands left to right.
• Look at the first color band and determine its color. Now look at the chart and match the
“First color band" color to the "Digit it represents". Write this number down
• Now look at the second color band and match that color to the same chart. Write this
number next to the first digit.
• Match the 3rd color band with the chart under multiplier. This is the number you will
multiple the other 2 numbers by. Write it next to the other 2 numbers with a multiplication
sign before it. (tells how many zeros follow the first two digits)
• Look at the fourth band or the tolerance color band. This band tells the tolerance and will
either be gold or silver. A gold band means 5% tolerance, silver 10%, and no fourth band,
20%.

3rd band (orange) = x10^3 3rd band (red) = x10^2
4th band (gold) = ±5% 4th band (gold) = ±5%

Resistance = 𝟓𝟔𝒙𝟏𝟎𝟑 𝜴 ± 𝟓% Resistance = 𝟓𝟏𝒙𝟏𝟎𝟐 𝜴 ± 𝟓%

Or 56𝒌𝜴 ± 𝟓% Or 5𝒌𝜴 ± 𝟓%
◼ First color is red
◼ Second color is black
◼ Third color is yellow
◼ Tolerance is silver
