Time Concept Time is the interval which lapses between two instances. The time taken by one apparent revolution of the sun about earth is known as a solar day. The time taken by the sun apparently to make a complete circuit of the ecliptic is equal to a tropical year. The earth makes 366.2422 revolutions during a tropical year, during the same period sun travels the total angle of 360° (24hrs). Following systems are used for measurement of tim’ 1. Sidereal time 2. Solar apparent time 3. Solar mean time 4. Standard time 1. Sidereal-time * When the measurement of time is based upon “first point of aries” it is known as sidereal time. The sidereal day is the interval of time between two successive upper transits of the first point of aries. This time begins when first point of aries records OtO"0* and at any other instant the sidereal time is the hour angle of first point of aries measured westward from O* to 24. Sidereal day is divided into 24hr and each hour is divided into 60 minutes and each minutes into 60 seconds. 1 Solar Year = 366.2422 Sidereal days By Ashish Kumar. 2. Apparent Solar time (AST) * Time based on apparent motion of sun around the earth is known as Solar apparent time. + Since a man regulates his activities based on the recurrence of light and darkness due to rising and setting of the sun, solar apparent time is suitable for everyday life. * The time interval between two successive lower transits of the sun over the meridian is called apparent solar day. * It becomes difficult to record because solar apparent day is not uniform thought a year since the orbit around the earth is not circular but elliptical: 3. Mean Solar-time(MST) — —» » * To overcome:the difficulty-of recording the:time with machine due to non-uniformity of sun’s apparent motion, a fictitious sun is assumed to move at a uniform rate along equator. ‘* This fictitious sun is called mean sun and the time corresponding to this sun is called mean solar time, “2 rval of time between two successive lower transits of mean sun is known as mean solar day. + Time at any place corresponding to longitude of that place is known as Local Mean Time. (LMT is different for different locations) By Ashish Kumar [@ @me_ashishsir fave Standard time * Local mean time changes from place to place because latitude of different places are different. * To avoid confusion arising from the use of different local times within a country, local mean time of a particular place is used as the standard mean time of entire country. For example, Standard meridian of India passes through (Near Allahabad) longitude 82°30’ East of GMT. GMT: Greenwich Mean Time= it is also known as universal time(UT), it is measured from lower transit of the Greenwich meridian of the meanisun: + LMT= Standard Time + Difference of longitude (in terms of time) Equation of Time The difference between apparent and mean solar times at any instant is known as Equation of| time(ET). ET = (AST-MST) The amount of equation of time and its variations are due to two reasons: 1. Obliquity of elliptic 2. Ellipticity of orbit By Ashish Kumar
