OBJECTIVES
After reading this chapter you should be able to-

 Identify career opportunities in physical education, exercise science, and sports


 Self-assess strengths, interests, goals, and career preferences.
 Understand their professional preparation curriculum and how to maximize
educational opportunities
 Discuss the role of practical experience in professional preparation.
 Describe strategies to enhance marketability
 Understand the importance of professionalism in their career.
 Identify professional organizations within the field and understand the benefits of
membership

DEFINITION OF TERMS

1. Career. A path or progress through life or history. A profession or occupation


chosen as one’s life’s.
2. Professional. Having the qualities that you connect with trained and skilled
people, such as effectiveness, skill, organization, and seriousness of manner.
3. Development. Process that created growth, progress, positive change or the
addition of physical, economic, environmental, social and demographic
components.

CAREERS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION, EXERCISE SCIENCE, AND SPORT

Expanded tremendously during this decade. Millions of Americans from all


segments of society engage in fitness activities on a regular basis. Led to a need for
competent professionals to design, lead, and evaluate fitness programs. Qualified
individuals are needed to conduct recreational programs and to teach lifetime sport
skills.

CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES ARE LIMITED ONLY BY ONE’S


IMAGINATION
Choosing a Career

Making career choice is decision making process. This typically involves gathering
facts, evaluating information, and making a selection from the options available to
you.
 Learning firsthand about potential careers can be extremely helpful in your
decision making process. Both informational interviews and job shadowing of
professionals will provide you with a more in-depth understanding of each
potential career.
 Another advantage is that you can learn about professionals’ backgrounds
through searching tha internet, reading their blogs, reviewing articles published,
determining areas of interest, and/or following them on Twitter.

Maximizing Professional Preparation

The process of preparing for career is referred to as professional preparation.


Professional Preparation involves the attainment of skills, knowledge, and
dispositions required of professionals in our field.

Professional preparation also includes maximizing strengths and developing abilities


with reference one’s chosen career. Professional preparation my be thought of as the
process of increasing personal competence, attaining the necessary credentials, and
marketability.
Education
The growth of the disciplines and the changing job market have stimulated the
development of curriculum to prepare individuals for these expanded opportunities.

1. Liberal Arts
Liberal arts courses provide the opportunity to obtain a broad base of knowledge.
(e.g., sciences, math, languages, English, art, and music). Some courses are required,
such as writing and speech. Other courses are elective, and students can select the
courses they wish to take to fulfill their degree requirements.

2. Professional Courses
Provide students with knowledge, skills, nd dispositions relative to the discipline
nd are designed to prepare majors for their chosen career. Students preparing for a
career in exercise science may take professional exercise science courses and outside
courses focusing on science (e.g., chemistry and physiology) nutrition.

3. Electives
The number of electives cries from program to program and from institution to
institution. Electives may be used to pursue a special interest to broaden your liberal
arts background, and/or to enhance your marketability to completing and
strengthening your career preparation.

4. Minors
An increasing number of students are taking advantage of their electives to
pursue minors or concentrations or areas of specialization. Sports management majors
may be required to have minor in business. Sport communication majors may have a
minor in journalism, photography, or speech.

5. Practicums
In teaching, this practical experience has long been a tradition and is referred to
as student teaching. Student teaching typically takes place in the latter part of the
student’s junior year or during the senior year; this experience may last for semester.

6. Certifications
Advantage of various certification programs offered through your school or
reputable outside agencies.

7. Academic Performance
A major determinant of your career opportunities and professional success is your
academic performance. Potential employers view academic performance as a strong
reflection of a prospective employee’s abilities and often as an indicator of one’s
potential to succeed.

Personal Development
Development of personal skills and abilities is important part of theeducational
process.As part of the self-assessment process, you were able to identify areas of
strength and areas needing improvement.

As a student, it is importatnt that you become falimiar with your curriculum so you
can plan your education and trangthen your credentials for your chosen career.

Related Experiences
Your activities and related experiences can significantly enhance your career
preparation. Your extracurriculr activities can help you develop skills that are relevant
to your chosen career.

Being active in the physical education or exercise science majors club contributes to
your professionl growth.

Another means to gain practical experience.
Professional Involvement
Start early to become professional. Professional activities are a source of knowledge
and growth.
Attaining a Professional Position

Obtaining the desired position requires a well-plnned effort. It is important to market


yourself effectively and prepare throughly for this effort.

Resume Building
Early in your educational career, your should begin the process of developing a
resume. A resume is a summary of of your qualifications and relevant experiences.

There are many different formats of resume for writing a resume, typically they
include sections listing career objective, education, relevant employment nd
experiences.

Honors and awards, volunteer activities, campus activities, certifications, professional


memberships and skills.

Portfolios
It is used by some students to show case their work and document their attainment of
stated standards for the field. Primarily used in teaching, other physical education ,
exercise science, and sport professionals, such as those entering the field of sport
media.
Placement File
Placement files generally contin demographic information, resume, and letters of
recommendation. Letters of recommendtion should be solicited from people who re
well cquinted with your abilities.

YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE AND YOUR PROFESSIONL PROFILE


It is IMPORTANT to manage your online presence so it presents a positive,
professional image.

Searching for a Job


Many sources will assist you in locating job openings. Newspapers, state employment
offices, and some state education departments have lists of job openings. Job listing re
also posted on the World Wide Web (www).

Networking
It is through personal conatcts that people learn about they are even advertised.
Attending conferences or prticipting in professionl orgnizations is great way to build
contacts and expand your network.

Applying for a Job


It should set forth the purpose of the letter, refer the reader to the resume to note
certain qualifications particularly relevant to the position, and relate why you are
interested in the position, emphasizing your career goals and potential contribution to
the organization.

Interviewing
Find out as much as possible about the organization, the job responsibilites, and other
relevant information.

The following list contains some common questions.


 What are your career plans and goals?
 How has your education prepared your for this job?
 What are your greatest strengths? What are your major weaknesses?
 What is your professional philosophy? Can you give an example of how your
philosophy has guided your actions?

As part of preparation process, you also should prepare a list of questions to ask the
interviewer, Some possible questions are:
 What are the opportunities for personal growth?
 What are the training programs or educational opportunities offered to
employees?
 What are the challenging aspects of this position?
 What are the organization’s plans for the future?
 What qualities are you looking for in new employees?

Follow-Up
Follow each interview with a thank-you letter. The letter should stress your interest in
the position and highlight important topics that your believe went particularly well in
the interview.

Accepting a Position
When offered a position, again carefully weigh the characteristics of the job with the
results of your self-assessment pertaining to your skills, interests, personal and work
values, and career goals.

PROFESSIONALISM

It encompasses competency, credibility, accountability, and advocacy.

One hallmark of those actively engaged in our field. Graduating with a degree
provides your with the necessary credentials and competencies required of beginning
professionals entering the field. Professionalism is a difficult concept to define, and
perhaps the easiest to explain by highlighting key behaviors associated with
professionalism.

Leadership

As professionals, we must be leaders in developing and advocating for quality


programs. As leaders within our programs, we play an important or significant role in
influencing the experience of program participants, addressing their needs, and
supporting their efforts to achieve their goals.
Leadership is th art and process of infeuncing individuals and groups to achieve
established goals. LEADERS have passion, vision, and commitment.

Advocacy

It is incumbent upon you to advocate for your programs. We must take an active role
in promoting the value and growth of our programs. We must seek to influence public
policy to strengthen our programs and work to ensure that they are not reducedor cut
because of lack of resources.

Accountability

They fill their many professional obligations in exemplary fashion.

Programs are planned, have established goals, are implemented according to current
standards of professional practice, are conducted in the best interests of the
participants, are monitored for quality on a continous basis, and are evaluted
periodically using accepted assessment techniques.

Cultural Competency and Cultural Humility

Tervalon and Murray-Garcia suggested that in practice, Cultural competency is not a


discrete endpoint to be achieved but a process they termed cultural humility.

Cultural humility is an ongoing process of self-reflection and self-critique that one


engages in as part of their commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth. It
ask us to be advocates for change, to develop respectful partnerships with individuals
and communities to address inquities.

Ethics

Professionals adhere to ethical standards of conductin their interactions with


participants in their programs.
Role Modeling

Remember that they are in a position of influence and serve as role models for
participants in their programs.

Involvement and Continued Professional Development

Professionals are committed to staying up to date with new reserch findings and
changing techniques. They are interested in learning and take advantage of continuing
education courses, workshops, webinars, conferences, and professional journals to
stay abreast of the latest changes.

Service

Professionalism includes services not only to the profession but to society.


Professionals recognize their responsibility to be involved in community service, not
only to offer leadership in their area of expertise, but to participate in activities that
enrich the community as a whole.

It is concept with mny different meanings. it reflects commitment to the field and
people whom we serve, respect and consideration for others, nd responsibility to
oneself, others, and society.

According to Sherrill, “SERVICE is the closest synonym to Professionalism.”


PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS IN PHYSICAL EDUCTION, EXERCISE
SCIENCE, AND SPORT

Many of the greatest changes in physical education, exercise science, and sport have
their beginnings in organizational meetings and conferences.
