Performance Task in Statistics and Probability

This document outlines a 4-day performance task on random variables and probability distributions where students will conduct a survey on a topic of their choice, analyze the results to determine probabilities and distributions, research related literature, and write a paper reflecting on their findings and learning. Students are assessed on their computations, reflections, analysis of results, and overall paper quality.

Performance Task in Statistics and Probability

Chapter 1: Random Variables and Probability Distribution

Time Frame: 4 meetings
Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of random variables and
probability distributions.
Performance Standard:
The learner is able to apply an appropriate random variable for a given real-life problem
(such as in decision making and games of chance).
Learning Competencies:
The learner…
a. illustrates a random variable (discrete and continuous);
b. distinguishes between discrete and continuous random variables;
c. finds the possible values of a random variable;
d. illustrates the probability distribution for discrete random variables and its properties;
e. computes probabilities corresponding to a given discrete random variable;
f. constructs the probability mass function of a discrete random variable and its
corresponding histogram;
g. illustrates the mean and variance of a discrete random variable;
h. calculates the mean and the variance of a discrete random variable;
i. interprets the mean and the variance of a discrete random variable; and
j. solves problems involving mean and variance of probability distributions.

Materials Needed per group (with 3 members):

Survey sheets
Calculator
Short Bond Papers
Laptop

Day 1 Ask the students to think a research topic that they are interested to
know but it should be simple, attainable, and problem-based. From that
topic, allow them to think one research question in which the answer
should be discrete. Moreover, they need to identify two different groups of
samples to be their respondents. The total number of respondents must be
at least 50 students (25 students or more per group of sample).
Example:
Research Topic: Number of Gadgets used by the Students in
Online/Modular Learning Modality
Research Question: How many gadgets did you use during the
online/modular learning modality?
Respondents (2 groups): Two sections from grade 11, or Students from
Gr. 11 and 12 or Students from JHS and SHS

Furthermore, ask the students to prepare a short paragraph/ introduction

explaining why they became interested with that topic. It can be 10 to 15
sentences only.

Lastly, tell the students that they need to prepare a survey form for the
conduct of the survey.
Example:

Research Question: _______________________________________

Name of Group (e.g. JHS Name of Group (e.g. SHS

Students) Students)
Name of Students Answer Name of Students Answer

Day 2 Conduct of Survey (During Recess or Lunch Break)

Using the formulated research question, the students will conduct
survey to their chosen respondents. They have to ask at least 50 students.
Tell them to take pictures for documentation.

Day 2 Computation Process (Class Time)

Using the derived data from the survey, the students will determine
the values of the random variable, create a probability distribution table
and solve for the value of the mean, variance and standard deviation for the
two groups of respondents. Let them create the findings of their survey
using the given guide questions.
Guide Questions for the Findings:
1. Compare the means of the two group. What does it mean?
2. Compare the standard deviations of the two groups. What does it
mean?
Take Note: Before the class ends, remind the students to search in the
internet about literatures and studies that are related in their research
question. They have to look for at least three related literatures and three
related studies because they will be using it. Ask them to copy paste the url
as their references.
Day 3 Research Paper Formulation
With the use of their acquired literature and studies, ask them to
create a short paragraph about their related literature and studies. Let them
summarize their information with a maximum of twenty (20) sentences
only. Ask them as well to relate it with their own findings.

Day 4 Reflection and Submission of Output

After that, tell them to create an individual reflection about the task. The
content of their reflection can be their own strength and weaknesses in
doing the task, citing their own experiences and stating the things that they
have learned. Lastly, ask them to organize their work with the following
arrangement: introduction, computation, findings, related literature and
studies, individual reflection, references, and documentation.

Rubrics Computation (25 pts.) – The presentation of computations are all

complete, detailed, and accurate.
Reflection (5 pts.) – The reflection demonstrates a conscious and thorough
understanding of the given content. Use specific and convincing examples
to provide insightful ideas.
Quality of Analysis (10%) – The interpretations provide insights into the
pattern of the data and don’t overstate the findings. Information is
evaluated, analyzed, and synthesized.
Overall Quality of the Written Document (10%) – This includes style
and organization, use of language, and quality of review of literature.
Critical understanding of literature is evident. Sources are rich and diverse.
Total Score = 50 pts.
