A Famous Novelist: Abdul Hamzah

Abdul had always enjoyed telling stories from a young age. He used to tell stories that his parents had read
to him. As he grew older, he would write short stories to entertain his family and classmates.
Abdul’s parents encouraged him to take part in short story writing competitions where he often won
first prize. At the age of 20, Abdul decided to write his first novel. He originally wanted to title his book
The Haunted House, but later changed it to The Haunted House at Kampung Limau. Once the book was
written and he was satisfied, Abdul brought it to Leeway Publishing. They liked the story and agreed to
buy the book rights from him for RM15 000.00. He said he would think about it. Abdul then approached
another publisher, Alona Books. They offered him an advance payment of RM4 000.00 and a six per cent
royalty. Abdul thought it was a good deal and happily took the offer.
The publisher did a good job marketing his book. In no time at all, people began hearing about his
novel and it received very good reviews in the local newspapers. Abdul was ecstatic. The book soon became
well-known and 40 000 copies were sold. By then, Abdul already had an idea for another book but was
too busy promoting his first one. Therefore, it took him two years to finish The Ghost of Gina Tan. This
book too was a hit and sold 50 000 copies.
Alona Books arranged for Abdul to go on tour to promote the new book. Abdul’s fans said that they
loved his books because the stories were intriguing and scary at the same time. In one newspaper interview,
Abdul said that he often worried if his books were dull and silly. In another, Abdul shared that his most
difficult challenge as a writer was a lack of productivity as he was too busy promoting his books. He was,
however, grateful that he never had to worry about a lack of ideas.
Later this year, Abdul will be writing a screenplay for the movie, The Unwanted Gift. Not too long
ago, he wrote a screenplay for The House by the Cemetery, which had been very successful. Last year,
Abdul travelled to Japan to promote his book. Next year, he will be travelling south for a Singapore book
tour. Abdul is excited about his trip.

Changing to a Healthier Lifestyle

‘Sally, you have to run faster! All your classmates have already crossed the finishing line,’ Mr Rama, the
Physical Education (PE) teacher said.
Sally tried her best to speed up but it was very difficult. By the time she reached the finishing line,
she was out of breath and exhausted. Mr Rama remembered that Sally had been fitter last year. He decided
to talk to her after PE.
‘You wanted to see me, Mr Rama?’ Sally asked.
‘Yes, I noticed that lately you don’t look fit. Is everything okay?’ Mr Rama prodded.
Sally looked a little embarrassed. She then admitted that lately she had become very lazy. Last year,
she used to go for dance classes but she did not feel like attending them anymore. She also started to spend
more time watching television and browsing the Internet, instead of exercising. Furthermore, she ate fast
food almost every day with her friends and while watching her favourite TV shows.
Mr Rama advised her to change her lifestyle. He was worried that if she continued this unhealthy
lifestyle, she would end up getting diabetes, high blood pressure or heart problems. Sally nodded her head.
That day after school, Sally’s friend, Rita invited her to have lunch at a fast food restaurant. Sally
remembered what Mr Rama had said and declined Rita’s invitation. She then went home and ate her mum’s
delicious and nutritious cooking.
Sally then asked her mother if she could go back to taking dance classes. Her mother happily said
she could and admitted to feeling upset when Sally had stopped going to dance classes previously. After
dinner, instead of having ice cream, Sally munched on an apple. At night, she spent less time browsing the
Internet and decided to go to bed early.
The next morning, Sally woke up feeling rested and refreshed. She decided to continue living healthily.
A month later, Sally could run faster than her classmates in PE class. Mr Rama was very impressed. Sally
thanked him for talking to her and advising her to change her lifestyle.

Leela and Her Pet

Leela had always wanted a pet. One day, one of her friends told her that his cat had given birth to two
kittens and asked her if she wanted one.
When Leela saw the kittens, she immediately fell in love with the brown one. (35) F She could
not resist taking photos of the kitten with her mobile phone. Although she really wanted to keep it, she
knew she had to ask for her mother’s permission first. When Leela arrived home, she spoke to her mother
about the kitten. (36) C
Her mother thought about it for a minute, ‘You can have the kitten but you must take good care of
it.’
Leela promised to feed, clean and play with it every day, so her mother said she could bring the kitten
home. Leela then rushed over to her friend’s house. (37) H Leela was overjoyed and she named it,
Princess.
Everyone in the family loved Princess. Leela’s mother bought a basket for Princess while her father
got her cat toys. (38) A Meanwhile, her grandfather would let Princess sleep on his lap.

You should spend about 25 minutes in this part.

Read the email from your English-speaking friend, Lisa.

Hi,

Why don’t we join a class for the coming school holidays?

We can enrol on art class, cross-stitching class, swimming class – or perhaps something else?
Which class do you think we should enrol on?
Do let me know what you think.

Lisa

In about 80 words, write an email to Lisa giving some advice.

(Suggested answer)

Hi Lisa,

All the classes you mentioned sound interesting. However, I think we should join the art class as it can
help us improve our skills. We can learn how to paint using watercolours, oil-based paints and
more. We can also meet others who enjoy painting at the class and share ideas on art. Although we also
enjoy cross-stitching and swimming, I believe we will benefit more from the art class.

I hope you are fine with my suggestion.

Last week, my family and I celebrated my mother’s birthday at home. A few days before her birthday party,
Father ordered food and drinks for the guests. I baked a special birthday cake for my mother and my sister
invited our relatives and friends to the party.
On the day of the party, Mother happily greeted all the guests that came. Soon, Father asked everyone
to gather in the dining room. We sang Happy Birthday and clapped joyously as Mother cut her cake. After
that, Mother unwrapped her presents. Some took photos of her and the others enjoyed the delicious food.
Mother thanked us for organising the party. She had a wonderful time that day and all of us enjoyed
ourselves too.
