Edpm Spped Test 6

The document classifies different types of computers based on their size, performance, and cost. It discusses microcomputers, which include laptops, desktops, palmtops and notebooks for single users. Minicomputers are mid-sized and were popular in the 1960s for multiple simultaneous users through terminals. Mainframes are very large, powerful and expensive systems used by large organizations for many simultaneous users to access and process large amounts of data. Supercomputers are the largest, most powerful and expensive computers used for complex calculations like weather forecasting and space exploration.

TYPES OF COMPUTERS

Computer systems may be classified as Microcomputers, Minicomputers, Mainframes and super

computers. This classification is done on the basics of system performance, which in turn affects physical

size and cost. With the repaid pace at which computer technology is changing, classifying computers on

this basics is often difficult, since many of the newer smaller systems can outperform the large models of

a few years ago.

MICROCOMPUTERS

Microcomputers also called Personal Computers are single-user systems. This category ranges in size

from the small palmtop to the considerable large desktop computers. Some examples of microcomputers

are:

 Laptop

 Desktop

 Palmtop

 Notebook

 Personal Digital Assistance

MINICOMPUTERS

Minicomputers are sometimes called Mid-range computers. They were very popular in the 1960s. Their

cost, storage and processing capitalizes were between those of a microcomputer and a mainframe. They

were mainly used in manufacturing plants, research labs and businesses. Mini systems were designed to

handle simultaneously the processing needs of multiple users. They allow many users to share access to

hardware through stations called Terminals which consist of Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse.
MAINFRAMES

Mainframes are very large powerful computers. These computers are very expensive. Mainframes are

large systems that can handle numerous users, store large amounts of data and process transactions at a

very high rate. They are found in large organizations where many people must access the same data, often

simultaneously. Each users accesses the mainframe through a terminal. Mainframes usually require

specialized environment including separate Air Conditioning and Electrical Power.

SUPERCOMPUTERS

Supercomputers are the largest, most powerful category of computers and consequently the most

expensive. These systems are able to process millions of instructions per second. They are used for such

applicants as weather, forecasting , space exploration, genetic engineering and other jobs that require

long, complex calculations.
