Pitch-Catch Calc

This document describes the pitch-catch technique for ultrasonic testing of welds. It provides 4 equations to calculate: (1) the distance of the transmit probe from the centerline, (2) the distance of the receive probe from the centerline, (3) the distance between the transmit and receive probes, and (4) the distance of the transmit probe from the centerline. An example calculation is shown to find the distance between probes and the transmit probe's distance from the weld centerline for a double-vee weld with given dimensions.

a /d = tan θ, or a = d tan θ ---------------------------------- (1)

b = (t – d) tan θ ------------------- (2)

c = b – a or,
c = tan θ (t – 2d) ---------------- (3)

X = t tan θ + c, or
X = 2 (t – d) tan θ -------- (4)

Example: A 75 mm thick double-vee weld has root at 50 mm from top surface. Compute
the distance between the T & R probes (45°), as well as distance of index of T from
centerline of weld.

Solution:

t = 75 mm; d = 50 mm

X = 2 (75 – 50) tan 45° = 2 X 25 = 50 mm.(distance between probes)

a = 50 tan 45° = 50 mm (distance of T from centerline of weld)
