San Diego Pro-Cathedral, formerly called San Diego Parish
Church or St. Didacus of Alcala Parish Church is the center of Roman Catholicism in Silay City, Negros Occidental. It is said that the church is the second in the country to be declared as a Pro-cathedral and the only one outside Metro Manila on December 25, 1994. The church’s patron saint is San Diego de Alcala. Father Alejo Ignacio de Molinas, a Spaniard, cathedral-silay-city-negros-occidental.html served as the church's first priest. In 1841, started by Fr. Eusebio Locsin, a longer-lasting structure made of wood and stone was built. The church's roof was constructed from galvanized iron. However, when the 1898 revolution erupted, the church was still unfinished and needed more work. Later on, a wealthy Silay sugar baron named Don Jose Ledesma gave money in 1925 to replace the outdated building. The new church's building was finished in 1927. Italian architect Lucio Bernasconi was in charge of creating the new building. For the Silay church, he was inspired by the magnificent churches in Italy; as a result, the building's architectural style is Romanesque. The structure of the church is shaped like a Latin cross, with a cupola or dome rising 40 meters above the nave.
