Accommodation
To: Ellie Crest
Hi Ellie,
I’m so pleased you can come surfing in August! Paul, Rose and Kevin are
coming too, so there will be five of us. We’ve decided to return to New Sands for a
couple of days, because the surf board hire is so cheap there.
I’m starting to think about accommodation. We won’t camp again after last year! I
hated staying in a tent in all that rain! Kevin wants to hire a caravan. There are some
nice ones with 3 bedrooms, showers and cooking facilities. The problem is, none of the
caravan parks take short bookings in the summer. The minimum stay is a week. It’s a
shame because there are several nice parks near the beach.
There’s a hostel for young people in New Sands. It’s the cheapest option after
camping, and there’s a big kitchen and dining room where we can cook. The problem
is, accommodation is in dormitories and I don’t really want to sleep with strangers.
There are a few guest houses in New Sands. Some have triple rooms, so we
only need to book two rooms. We’ll have to book soon if we choose that option,
because many guest houses are already full. The hotels in New Sands are too
expensive, although I’d love to stay at the Sunrise Pavilion with its large pool!
The final option is to rent a cottage. I found one. It has three bedrooms – a
double, a single and a twin, so two of us would have to share a bed! There’s a big
kitchen with a microwave, washing machine and dishwasher. The living room has a TV
and DVD player. There’s just one bathroom, but there’s a separate WC. There’s a nice
garden too. The problem is, it’s 5 miles from the beach.
Cheers,
Natalie

20 Researcher Monideepa Tarafdar commented: “It might seem counterintuitive that they
continue to use the same platforms that are causing them stress rather than switching them off,
but what happens is that a wide range of features is offered by social network sites, which
makes users see them both as stressors and as a distraction from that stress.” So, without
11
realising it, a blurring line is created between the stress caused and the compulsive use of
social media.
25 A study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania found that reducing social media
use to 30 minutes a day resulted in significant improvements on general well-being, which
means that, just by being more mindful of our social media use, people can improve their
mood and focus. While 30 minutes a day may not be a realistic target for many, we can still
benefit from decreasing the amount of time we spend on social media. For most of us, that
30 means reducing how much we use our smartphones. Perhaps next time, before accessing the
internet, you could pause for a moment and think about why you are going back on social
media again.

Teens today are not only getting the majority of their news online, but they are turning away from traditional media to find out about current events,
according to a new poll by Common Sense and SurveyMonkey. The survey found that teens get their news more frequently from social media
sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, or from YouTube than directly from news organizations. Fewer than half of the teens out there, 41% to be
more precise, access news reported by news organizations in print or online at least a few times a week, and only 37% watch the news on TV at
least a few times a week.
YouTube recommendations seem to be driving news consumption. Among all teens who watch news on YouTube, regardless of how often, 50% say
they usually find news on YouTube because it was recommended by YouTube itself. 25% say they are followers or make subscriptions of a
specific news channel on the internet and only a small number say that they find their news through online search or someone they know in real
life.
Sixty percent of teens who get news from YouTube say they are more likely to get them from influencers and personalities rather than from journalists.
Two in every three teens who get news directly from news organizations say doing so has helped them better understand current events, compared to
other teens who get their news from YouTube and social media sites, saying that they feel more confused.
Teens clearly prefer a visual medium for accessing news. A majority say that “seeing pictures and video helps them better understand what happened,
while just 36% say they’d prefer to read or hear the facts about what happened.
These findings raise concerns about what kind of information the next generation is using to shape their decisions. Therefore, it seems urgent that
teens start thinking critically so as to make informed decisions, which may mean getting the “facts” from more reliable sources.

Maastricht University was hit by a cyberattack just before Christmas 2019. Almost all Windows systems, and email services were seriously affected. In
a Press Conference, the executive board of the university admitted that they had no choice but to pay the ‘ransom’ to the hackers. This was the
only way they could get their systems to work properly again.
Experts claim that ransomware hacks like these, in which entire computer systems are locked down unless a ransom is received, usually end in
payment. For starters, victims say that, in the end, it is cheaper than having to hire someone that will work for weeks or even months to repair
things.
Maastricht University was not the first university to surrender to the demands of digital blackmailers. In 2016, Calgary University in Canada announced
that they had paid the demanded ransom after having been hacked. Luckily, they only paid 20 thousand dollars, which was a relatively small
amount all things considered in comparison to Maastrich university that had paid 220,000 euros in bitcoins, the currency that cyber criminals prefer
to work with as it is untraceable.
The procedure followed by the criminals appears to have been a textbook example, which Information Technology experts describe as follows: first,
the networks of the institute affected are locked down, next the hackers make their demands known. The affected entity has to make a small
payment to show good faith. Following this, a few “repaired files” are made accessible. The next step is for the affected entity to make the full
payment so that the key to all the missing files is handed over. An important question which remains is of course whether the blackmailers have
access to files that they can use again at a later stage to blackmail Maastricht University.
For the time being, the origin of the latest hack at Maastrich University is still not clear. Some experts claim that it came from Russia. Others are of the
opinion that this kind of report is pure speculation: tracing hackers such as these can be compared to looking for a needle in a haystack.
